Mission
1) to give designers, accomplished and novice alike, a platform to showcase their work while receiving honest & constructive peer reviews
2) to supply all TGC Tours schedulers with a plethora of tour-worthy courses for use in competition
3) to foster fellowship and camaraderie among the design community
Format
This contest aims to keep things somewhat simple from a format perspective. There will be no groups or “rounds” per se. This is straight up everyone for themselves designing. There will be a max of 30 contestants in the field (with the potential for alternates if anyone wants to take that designation after signups). While there will be no “rounds” there will be a cut made. The initial judging will broken up among the group of judges and will cut the field from a potential 30 down to a top 10. Those ten will then be re-evaluated by the larger pool of judges before a final ranking 1-10 is determined.
Judging
The judging coordinator for this contest is CiB0RG . He is currently assembling a full panel of judges that will contain designers and players to give different perspectives on the courses. During the initial cut down the courses will be divided among judges for scoring purposes with the final scoring for each course being a composite of the individual scores of the judges for each course. I want to emphasize that numerical scoring of this kind will not always result in the exact and final ranking as there will likely be some difference in the ranges of the scores. That means that there will be certainly be some tweaking after the initial scoring is determined. This is normal and happens in every contest so don’t be surprised by that revelation. Once the cut is done to the top 10 the ranking of the other courses becomes irrelevant from a contest perspective. However, composite scoring and comments will be available to every designer. The top 10 will be replayed and scoring will be done by those judges that had not yet played the courses so that scoring and comments are available from EVERY judge. Those will again be discussed and tweaked until a final ranking is obtained.
The dates for the judging will depend slightly on the entrants and the judges so I am not announcing the schedule for judging just yet...Stay Tuned.
Courses
Please note that this contest is intended to produce courses that are readily playable on the CC tours at TGCTours. Designers may design whatever difficulty they see fit but should bear in mind that part of the scoring will reflect the suitability for CC tour play. That does not mean that the back tees and default conditions need to be CC level...conditions and tees used for the contest may be specified by the designer. Please bear that in mind when designing! Don’t box yourself in due to difficulty concerns...just find ways around it. The theme and style is completely up to the designer. No limitations. If you’d like to design in BSteppey then go right ahead… ;-)
REQUIRED ELEMENTS!
This contest is going to introduce REQUIRED DESIGN ELEMENTS! This may sound like a restriction. If you wish to look at it that way then I suggest you not enter this contest. These elements are simply providing some direction for certain holes or design elements. How you choose to execute them is entirely up to you. This is a challenge for sure! I will say only this...Do not attempt to just meet the requirement in the most basic way possible. Be creative...but without being silly. Good luck!
REQUIRED ELEMENT JUDGING!
These elements will be scored slightly differently than the rest of the course. Instead of simply earning points each course will start with a pool of required element points. If the elements are not met then points will be SUBTRACTED From that pool. If they are met and are done in a uniquely outstanding way bonus points can be earned. Those bonus points are not unlimited though! It will be a bonus of only a point or two (depending on the total score max which I’m still working on finding…). DON'T lose points by failing! Work for those extra points! They may make all the difference in the end!
REQUIRED ELEMENT CHOICES!
Rather than simply assign two or three required elements to all contestants you will have a choice to make. You must choose THREE elements from the list below. You may combine elements on any hole you wish! No need to use EVERY hole to accomplish a requirement. Each designer must post in the completed work thread for their course what elements were chosen and what holes accomplish each element.
At least ONE Driev-able par 4
At least ONE Par 3 greater than 230 yards
At least TWO holes with ZERO bunkers
At least ONE blind tee shot
At least THREE par 4’s under 400 yards
At least ONE three shot par 5
At least ONE template green complex of your choice (please specify template used and provide a real world example!)
At least FIVE par 5 holes
At least FIVE par 3 holes
Total course yardage no greater than 6750 (for the contest tees. If you choose to NOT make these the back tees...well good luck because THAT is not an easy thing to pull off well.)
At least ONE hole with elevation change equal to or greater than 125 feet
OTHER (suggestions are still open!)
Stipulations
These courses must be 100% your own work! No other person may do actual work in the designer for you. You may not use any outside program or data set to import terrain, holes, or surrounds (this includes but is not limited to Chad’s LIDAR software and OSM mapping). There are to be no beta versions published or files shared with other designers. No sharing over Xbox live or Playstation network for the sake of design assistance.
AWESOME STUFF!
STREAM if you can and would like to do so! You read that right! Stream away! Go for it! Make a WIP thread...post in progress stuff to your heart’s content.
Just a few rules about streaming… You MUST provide your stream name/channel/link...whatever it may be in a WIP thread or in a PM to ME or CiBORG. Why? Well...honestly it’s just so we can dip in and out sometimes and see how this process is working and if streaming is a good way to go for these things going forward. Also it is to keep us all honest. If you are streaming and you spend the entire time simply following the instruction of someone else in the chat or in discord then...that’s not really in the spirit of things is it? That being said it is 100% ok to ask for opinions if you are having issues. However...be aware that this is a two edged sword! Perhaps you receive good advice...well...you have to pull it off don’t you? If you can’t then you may just make things worse. Also you likely have a vision for each hole...don’t screw that up because someone else had a different thought. Just be aware of the advice you take and what you ask for. I am 100% ok with people learning and growing in this contest and part of that process is the help of others. I get that. Just don’t get carried away ok?
Camaraderie
All of the activity in the threads and on streams should be good-natured and ultimately point us back to the mission of these design contests. It's great that we can have a go at each other from time to time and make jokes, and that is encouraged, but let's be respectful. Everybody works hard on their course and has good intentions of making a great design, and the judges also put in a lot of work to make this happen. We can not accept personal attacks on anyone's work, their abilities, or the judges decisions, especially on the forums. Sportsmanship needs to remain a foundational principle of these competitions. Also...just as an aside...don’t have thin skin ok? This is the internet. Trolls are trolls and folks can be jerks. Roll with it. Don’t let the idiocy of the few drown out the support of the many. Kay? Thanks.
REGISTRATION!
Ok! Here we go! There will be 30 spots available. Registration will begin at midnight eastern time on the 1st day of May. THERE IS A CHANGE TO HOW THIS WILL WORK! READ ON!
The first 25 spots will be first come first served. There are no reserved slots for vets or anything like that. The last 5 spots will be held open for 48 hours! Anyone who didn’t get into the first 25 can still post their intention to compete. After 48 hours there will be a “drawing” or “wheel of randomness” used to determine the final 5 contestants and the alternates. Just because you missed the first 25 doesn’t mean you’re out! Get in on the lotto baby!
*NOTE* - DNF’s from previous contests are not eligible to enter this contest. IF you are not sure if you are in this group please PM me and I will clear that up!
Multimedia
All courses will receive a detailed critique on TGCToursTV via reebdoog !, and it will be promoted to the community to the best of our ability. It's a good chance to get some solid feedback from the judges and fellow competitors in the community on your design.
Hey...what questions do you have? What has not been made clear? What suggestions? Who do we need to bash in the knee before nationals?
ROCK ON! MAKE COURSES AND STUFF! ENJOY!
Final publish date is JULY 15th
