UPDATE: Details for the event are now updated below. Thank you to everyone who has shown interest, and for your patience as I try to figure out the best way to do this. It's clear there is a lot of interest, but the best way forward hasn't always been clear, as securing the right timeframe and flexibility in course choices has been difficult. Hopefully this new format will alleviate those issues.
The moniker: This is just something I have been playing around with for awhile. The OG stands for The Original Golfer, and is a play on the OG (original gangster) moniker. I think the OG has a whole variety of fun uses, and is extremely un-golflike, which makes it even better. scarpacci made the kickass logo that you see.
The Design Series: Pick a real life course, preferably a classic Golden Age design or one of the great modern designs, and preferably one that doesn't otherwise have enough data to create an accurate RCR, and create your best impression of it or spin on it. For inspiration, see joegolferg 's Greenbrier CC and The Heritage courses, inspired by TPC Old White and Harbour Town, respectively.
Design Window: Once you have selected a course, let me know via this thread or via PM, and we can make sure that your course is available and fits the selection criteria. Once you have a course and settled on a start date, you will have up to 12 weeks to complete your design. This will allow our judges to plan out their judging schedule accordingly.
Judging: A team of 3 judges will score each submitted course using the scoring rubric below. Please thank Moe Slorkman , PithyDoctorG , and mrvinegar206 for volunteering, and another thank you to @griff for offering our team his valuable advice. A limited number of guest judging opportunities may also be available in the future should any of the existing judges wish to compete.
Criteria/Scoring: The courses will be scored on the following criteria:
My role: I will not be a judge of the competition, but will serve as an advisor or consultant to all contestants. I will help with course research, design advice, playtesting, and any other ways in which the designer sees fit to use me, other than actually working in the GNCD. Or, the designer can tell me to bug off and go it alone.
Scoring Results: The goal of the Design Series will be to try and receive the highest score as possible from the judges. The all-time high scores will be kept here in a public, and hopefully highly visible, chart, which will provide bragging rights for the high-score holder, and publicity for all participants. Each submitted course will also be featured in my Original Golfer Society on PC and PS4.
I am not limiting entries, so if anyone who submits a course wants to give it another try in the future, I am not opposed to it.
Fan Votes: As we receive submissions, whenever it becomes clear that we will have multiple courses in the same category of courses, such as West Coast Classic, Raynor courses, Ross courses, etc, I will open a fan vote to determine the fan favorite in the category. I anticipate this will drive plays for each course involved.
Design Series Goals: In discussing and setting up participation with designers so far, it is clear to me that the competition aspect of the Series is not as important as the experience of trying to tackle one of the great courses in the world. Some designers have always been interested in doing an RCR, but never had the time to commit. Others are looking for ways to push themselves to try something different, or improve their skills in the designer. Whatever reason compels you to participate, the result for the community will almost certainly be a great design in TGC, with strategic and design elements influenced by the all-time greats in golf course design. The least that I can do, and hopefully the TGC-playing community, is regard you with a good amount of publicity and plays.
