I'm relatively late to the game,about 9 months I think,since I got it.The first computer game I've bought in 20 years.
In my opinion this game has two key elements that must be mastered, the putting and the wind. Everything else is relatively easy, with a bit of practice.Judging wind is simply a matter of practice and attention to detail - knowing how much extra distance that 17 mph tailwind,se to nw,is going to give you,how much adjustment is needed to hit it straight, etc etc. One of these days I'll take the time to work this out!
Putting - this really is the most important aspect of the game, and in that, the element which makes the game and real golf the most similar. Drive beautifully, play a lovely approach, both are not THAT difficult, but miss the putt from 10 feet enough times and the scorecard at the end of the day will be mediocre.
One answer is to get to 5 feet from the hole. Do this often enough and the score will come down, but I have to agree with those who aim to concentrate on becoming a good putter. I believe they are the ones who will make the most progress in the end,and the lowest scores.5 footers can still be missed.
Play the courses you hate playing most,be that windy links courses or very firm and fast conditions etc. Easier said than done,as it is human nature to want to play the courses we score well on.

Thanks for that putting practice course, boomboom! It made me realize that I really SUCK at putting. I've tried your method, @wagtunes method, and every other method. I feel like I could putt a TON better, but I just go with what I see. I know it won't have me challenging you guys in PGA if I make it. Sometimes I can do great with putting and other times I can't make anything. Reminds me of real life. Lol. I've seen a steady increase in my ability in all aspects since my 1st tournament in February. I've followed a bunch of the tips you guys have given. Thanks a bunch!

You have to go with what works for you, if you can master putting using nothing but feel you will be far far ahead of 99 percent of the players here. Watching the greats here, like Griffen Ray putt by complete feel I get an overwhelming sense of jealousy. For the life of me i cant nail this putting down. I have most of the mechanics down ok, although I still sadly lack at elevations on fast greens. I'm massively under achieving in the area of determining the line of a breaking putt. However rest assured I'm sure I'll nail it down just in time for it all to change again.

I've been experimenting with this today. Played some of the putting course using feel first, then tried this method. I was much better the way I've been doing. I'd rather play by feel instead of matching parallel lines. Doesn't feel like a game anymore playing like that. Still, some good tips and it seems to be working for alot of people.

You are another person that would be crazy to change what you are doing. I have watched you play. You are a very good putter, best part of your game in fact. I believe, and I may have already told you this before, but if you work on getting closer to the hole, your win would be around the corner.

You read the tough breakers really well and do it with speed golfing.

Hey boomboom I hope you can help me out with this one cause I'm getting SOOOO close. Just played the first 2 rounds of PGA Championship just for fun. Round 1 was a piece of cake, even with the firm greens. Shot 9 under. Even aced the 4th hole. Round 2 was where I ran into my problems and only managed even par. Essentially it comes down to this. When the greens are firm and the pins are tucked to the front (no room to play for roll out) I am just plain lost. I tried everything I could think of to get even remotely close to the pin. I tried landing on the fairway in front. I tried aiming for the rough right or left of pin. I even tried extreme loft. Nothing I did left me with anything better than either a chip from 13 to 29 yards or a very long putt. On these courses, par is about all I can make. I don't know what else to try. These setups baffle the hell out of me. I know once my putting gets better maybe I'll make a few of these 30 footers. But that's a long way off for me, at least on a consistent basis. So any words of wisdom you can share on these setups will be greatly appreciated as I just don't know what else to try. Thanks.

If you are baffled now - play Rds 3 and 4. Even BoomBoom is baffled by those, it seems...

However only round 3 has opened up, as stated, round 3 had scoring potential more so than round 4. I think it is still premature to assume no one chipped in in round 4 and shot -13. Also I cannot follow any ghosts to see as it would seem no one on PC was able to shoot that low a score on day 4. However I do find it rather surprising/astonishing/mesmerizing that someone was able to shoot -12 day 3 without a holeout and the longest putt being 20 feet. Some very good and consistent players were only able to muster up a -6 to -8 which was there with solid play. How -13 happened day 4, who knows. I would need a mulligan button and all day to match that. Sorry wags, I certainly can't help you.

It's sick. One of the rounds, OK, but both and from the same guy. Black magic stuff right there. Can't wait to see those ghosts. I think he is on PS4.

Well, I played rounds 3 and 4. 2 under and 5 under. 16 under for the whole thing. Round 2 essentially did me in. Don't know what happened there except landing in the water on that one hole didn't help. Just missed land by a yard.
Anyway, I'm getting better with my firm greens play. That's encouraging. I guess it's just more practice, practice, practice.
