Event 25 - 1970 CLEVELAND OPEN at Aurora Field - Round 4
With the 'guest' players out of the picture, the winner was certain to be one of the PGA Tour professionals still in contention. Overnight leader Frank Beard fell by the wayside, carding a nightmare 76 to finish tied 16th. The eventual victor was Bruce Devlin, who fired a closing 64, the best round of the event. Mark Lipping was the best of the guests, his second successive 68 securing a share of 9th place. Nate Arteezy hit a 74 to end the week in a tie for 49th, while Bob Fletcher's lacklustre 76 was only good enough to grab a share of 66th spot. Ian McKinley signed off with a 74, his health problems unfortunately getting the better of him.

Event 26 - 1970 CANADIAN OPEN at Glen Abbey - Round 1
Back in May Roger Instell won his first, and only, event at the Byron Nelson Classic. Today he stated his intention to add to that victory by producing a sizzling 62 to end the day with a 3-stroke lead. The next best-placed guests - Bob Fletcher, Charlie Roberts and Ian McKinley - could only earn a share of 23rd place after their 71's. Mark Lipping, with a 74, and Hans Kunok, with a 75, made slow starts to the tournament and already have a lot of ground to make up. An interesting start to the week...

Event 26 - 1970 CANADIAN OPEN at Glen Abbey - Round 2
Our overnight leader, Roger Instell, turned the screw on the rest of the field today when he shot the joint best round of the day, a very competent 67 considering the conditions, and a score that more than doubled his lead to seven strokes! Ian McKinley, who loves very quick greens, played well for a 69 and is now tied 8th, albeit eleven shots adrift of Roger. Charlie Roberts' solid 70 sees him one shot behind Ian in a share of 12th, while a further two strokes behind Charlie is Bob Fletcher, who survived a difficult day by shooting a level par 72. Mark Lipping is not having the tournament he planned and today's 71 leaves him with a mountain of work to do to catch the leaders from his lowly tied 50th position. Also improving on his first round score was Hans Kunok, but his 72 did not help him progress up the leaderboard. Can Roger maintain his hot form to win another title? The weekend will reveal all...

Event 26 - 1970 CANADIAN OPEN at Glen Abbey - Round 3
Barring a no-show on the final day our runaway leader has probably already won this tournament. Roger Instell extended his overall lead to ten strokes when he shot a solid 69 today. Ian McKinley also fired a good 69, his second of the event, and is now tied for 4th, eleven shots behind Roger. Charlie Roberts had a few problems and could only return with a 74, and also finding it tough out there were Bob Fletcher, with a 73, and Mark Lipping, with a 75.

Event 26 - 1970 CANADIAN OPEN at Glen Abbey - Round 4
This week saw the most dominating performance from a 'guest' player this season. Right from the get-go Roger Instell took an instant liking to Glen Abbey and he completed an amazing 13-shot win with a closing 67 today. Ian McKinley squeezed into a very commendable 2nd place by grabbing an eagle on the final hole, which helped him shoot his third consecutive 69 of the week. Charlie Roberts produced his best round of the tourney, a fine 68, which rewarded him with a share of 5th, while Bob Fletcher signed off with an even par 72 to leave him in a tie for 16th. Mark Lipping will be disappointed with his form this week, finishing with his best round of the event, a 70, which edged him into the top half of ther leaderboard, but perhaps he's saving himself for next week's Open Championship at St Andrews...

With only 4 events left to play of the tournaments constituting the Summer Bowl, Bob Fletcher still leads the way. Mark Lipping still tops the season money-list and it will take a huge effort for somebody to overhaul him, but there are still 17 tournaments to play so it is not impossible...

Event 27 - 1970 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at St Andrews - Round 1
Although the wind was howling around St Andrews, the course itself was playing surprisingly straightforward, and our intrepid guest players took full advantage. Ian McKinley, in particular, was very happy after his stunning opening 63, and he would sleep well knowing he was 2 shots clear at the top of the leaderboard. In a share of 4th, 4 strokes behind Ian, were Charlie Roberts and Bob Fletcher after their more than satisfactory 67's. Mark Lipping and the returning Randy Grant posted a pair of 69's and both will have to up their game to make upward progress...

Event 27 - 1970 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at St Andrews - Round 2
The guest players now dominate the top of the leaderboard! Overnight leader Ian McKinley shot an absolutely stunning 60 today, helping him to carve out a lead of 9 strokes from his nearest adversary. As long as he maintains his nerve over the weekend it will take a miracle for someone to deny him the win. The most likely candidate to challenge Ian is Mark Lipping, who carded a very impressive 63. One shot further back is Bob Fletcher in 3rd, who wasn't displeased with his 66, while Charlie Roberts lurks in 4th spot after a slightly disappointing 68. Now for the sprint to the finishing line...

Event 27 - 1970 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at St Andrews - Round 3
Ian McKinley's 64 today still has him at the top of the heap, but Roger Instell is threatening to spoil Ian's party. A late starter, Roger got off to a slow beginning with an opening 70, but then superb rounds of 61 and today's 60 has left him only four strokes adrift of the lead going into the final round. Mark Lipping's 63 gained one shot on Ian but still leaves him 8 behind - and surely that deficit will prove too much for him to bridge in Round 4. Three shots further back is Hans Kunok after consistent rounds of 65, 67 and 66 sees him rise to 4th spot. Bob Fletcher's second 67 of the week puts him 2 shots behind Hans, while Charlie Roberts' 69 today means he is 4 back from Bob. Randy Grant had a good, under par start to the tourney, but his game appears to have fallen apart since, as rounds of 81 and 74 seem to illustrate. With one round to play it's still uncertain who will be packing that Claret Jug in their suitcase...

Event 27 - 1970 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at St Andrews - Round 4
IAN McKINLEY IS THE 1970 OPEN CHAMPION!! As in the first two rounds, he produced the best score of the final day, a fine 66, to confirm his superiority over the rest of the field and win the Claret Jug by an emphatic 10 strokes!! Roger Instell's disappointing level par 72 today was enough to clinch sole possession of 2nd place, while Mark Lipping's 70 helped him to claim 3rd spot. Bob Fletcher came in with a 68 when at one stage it looked as if his score was going to be a lot lower, but he eventually succumbed to the conditions to finish 4th. Hans Kunok signed off with his worst round of the event, a 73, but still ended the tourney in 5th. In 6th spot was Charlie Roberts after repeating his third round score of 69. Randy Grant began the week well but, although the wheels fell off in his second round, today's 75 lifted him away from the foot of the leaderboard to earn a share of 53rd.
Two rookies making their PLAYPGATOUR debuts performed well - Olly Jose-Maria started and finished shakily but concluded his first tournament in 8th place, while Barney Buss edged ahead of Olly by a single stroke to finish in 7th.

Event 28 - 1970 IVB PHILADELPHIA GOLF CLASSIC at The Ace Club - Round 1
Firstly, a word about the course at The Ace Club. It is now one of my favourites as it has everything - undulations, variety, water but not too much, greens that are not too extreme, risk/reward, and good course management is required to score well. Ok, preaching over. Our early leader is Nate Arteezy who displayed admirable skills during his excellent 64, and he will be hoping to at least maintain, if not extend, his 3-stroke lead. Rookie Barney Buss shot a solid enough 68 and is tied 4th with Bob Fletcher and a couple of PGA pro's, namely Charles Coody and Billy Casper. Open Championship winner Ian McKinley started out with a 70 today and could still be suffering from a celebration hangover...

Event 28 - 1970 IVB PHILADELPHIA GOLF CLASSIC at The Ace Club - Round 2
Overnight leader Nate Arteezy couldn't find the magic of his opening round and had his lead cut to just one shot after only carding a 70 today. Newcomer Barney Buss is two strokes adrift of Nate after shooting his second 68 of the tourney, while Bob Fletcher also shot a 70 to end the day four strokes off the pace. Open Championship blues still have a grip on Ian McKinley and his disappointing 72 would see him lose ground on the leading bunch. Randy Grant is still struggling with his game and his second 73 of the week sees him way down the leaderboard. Things are coming to the boil nicely...

Event 28 - 1970 IVB PHILADELPHIA GOLF CLASSIC at The Ace Club - Round 3
Nate Arteezy suffered a disastrous 75 today and, as a result, has fallen off the top of the leaderboard and is now in 6th place, but still only 3 shots off the pace. We now have a couple of new joint leaders - PGA professional Billy Casper and guest player Bob Fletcher who recorded his second 68 of the tourney. On their shoulders, only one stroke behind, is Barney Buss carded a 71 today. Ian McKinley's 70 sees him in a share of 16th but still only 6 shots away from the leaders, so a minor miracle would be required for Ian to make it two wins in a row. Randy Grant's 75 has propelled him off the foot of the leaderboard, and he'll be hoping it stays that way at the end of the week. It's going to be a very close finish I suspect...

Event 28 - 1970 IVB PHILADELPHIA GOLF CLASSIC at The Ace Club - Round 4
Forget the previous leaderboard. Due to some late starters it now has a completely different appearance! Storming through to win his first tournament in only his second outing was OLLY JOSE-MARIA. Rounds of 64, 66, 68 and 70 gave Olly a 4-shot winning margin and demonstrated that he will be a force to be reckoned with in future events. In the runner-up spot was Hans Kunok who was level with Olly at the halfway point. Nate Arteezy squeezed into 4th place by shooting the joint best round of the final day, a 66. In fact, Nate, Olly and Hans all had the honour of carding the best round score of the tourney with scorching 64's on the opening day. Bob Fletcher's 71 was good enough to claim a share of 5th spot, while Barney Buss's 71 saw him finish a creditable 7th. Back in 23rd was Ian McKinley who hit an out of sorts 73, while Mark Lipping also struggled to find any form, carding a 72 today which meant he failed to break 70 all week, very unusual for Mark. Randy Grant is slowly improving, finishing tied 54th at 5 over par, but he is gradually getting there...

Bob Fletcher is hanging on to 1st place in the Summer Bowl earnings race after the conclusion of the IVB Philadelphia Golf Classic. And with only 2 events left he will be trying to fend off challenges from at least 4 other players over the next 2 weeks! Meanwhile, Mark Lipping is still way ahead of Bob and Ian McKinley in the overall season's earnings list, but there are enough tournaments remaining for that to change!
