Event 22 - 1970 KEMPER OPEN at Quail Hollow - Round 2
Stronger wind and rain met the players at the course today, generally making it longer and more difficult. That was especially true for Ian McKinley who could only scrape together a 77, a score which was to give him a share of last place with Nate Arteezy who managed a 74. Mark Lipping's 73 resulted in him being in a tie for 44th, while Charlie Roberts improved on his opening round by a stroke, carding a 70 for a share of 19th. Bob Fletcher also shot better today, a hard-earned 68 rewarding him with 3rd spot, level with PGA pro Lionel Hebert, and just two strokes behind halfway leader Lou Graham. I think an interesting weekend is in store...

Event 22 - 1970 KEMPER OPEN at Quail Hollow - Round 3
Very high winds had to be negotiated today, so low scoring looked unlikely. Nate Arteezy dragged himself off the bottom of the leaderboard with a creditable 72, as did Ian McKinley who played even better for a praiseworthy 69. One stroke ahead of Ian, tied 53rd, is Mark Lipping who repeated his second round score of 73. Charlie Roberts sneaked under par with his second 71 of the event and he looks set for a decent finish, tied 19th and just six shots behind the joint leaders. One of those leaders is PGA pro Lou Graham who matched Charlie's 71, and the other is Bob Fletcher who surprised himself with his second 69 of the week. So it all comes down to the final round, and Bob has a great opportunity to record his first tournament win of the 1970 season...

Event 22 - 1970 KEMPER OPEN at Quail Hollow - Round 4
A few weeks ago at Augusta in The Masters Bob Fletcher had a golden chance to claim his first ever tour win, but he succumbed to the immense pressure on the 18th green and threw the chance away. This week he made no such mistake. Joint leader after three rounds, today he fired his third 69 of the week to finish three clear of tour pro Dick Lotz. Bob was one of only two players to shoot under par in all four rounds, the other being Dan Sikes Junior who finished tied 7th. The next best-placed 'guest' player was Charlie Roberts whose 72 today provided him with a share of 17th place. Ian McKinley concluded the event with a 73, finishing disappointingly in a tie for 63rd. Mark Lipping's closing 75 was his worst round of the tourney, and he ended up in a lowly tie for 78th.

Event 23 - 1970 WESTERN OPEN at TPC Deere Run - Round 1
Illinois is our tour stop this week and, as usual, the weather forecast for the event is varied. On a windy opening day Carl Bishop, making his first appearance since that harrowing week at Peachtree for the Atlanta Classic, looked a little rusty on his way to a 73. Ian McKinley battled away for a level par 71, while Nate Arteezy started the event solidly with a 70. Mark Lipping fared slightly better with a good 69, and Charlie Roberts' game looked good as he carved out a fine 68 to earn a share of 10th spot. Last week's winner of the Kemper Open, Bob Fletcher, continued his sparkling form and tops the leaderboard after a sparkling 64 which leaves him 2 strokes clear of the field. Can Bob win again this week...?!

Event 23 - 1970 WESTERN OPEN at TPC Deere Run - Round 2
The wind relented a little today, but the main challenge for some would be the ultra-fast greens. Ian McKinley and Mark Lipping could make no real progress as they returned to the clubhouse with a pair of 71's, maybe saving their best for next week's US Open. The conditions seemed to suit Nate Arteezy as he bombed around in just 64 strokes which left him tied 3rd with opening round leader Bob Fletcher, who struggled in with a 70. Round of the day, and the tournament so far, came from Charlie Roberts whose stunning 63 makes him the new pacesetter. Charlie is one clear of PGA pro Hugh Royer Junior, and three ahead of Bob and Nate. It's still anyone's tourney...

Event 23 - 1970 WESTERN OPEN at TPC Deere Run - Round 3
The windiest conditions possible greeted the players on the first tee today, which suggested that scoring would be difficult. Subsequently, our guests revelled in the wind, everyone of them going under par. Ian McKinley's 66, his first sub-par round in this event, promoted him into a tie for 12th spot, while Nate Arteezy's 68 would see him finish in 4th place, just two shots off the lead. Halfway point pacesetter Charlie Roberts registered a 70, a score that dropped him to 3rd spot, a single stroke behind the new joint leaders. Bob Fletcher's unexpected (his own word) 66 put him back on top in a share of the lead with Mark Lipping, who produced the round of the week, an incredible 60, and it could be that Mark has finally found his best form just in time for the third Major of the season next week. Now anything can happen on the final day...

Event 23 - 1970 WESTERN OPEN at TPC Deere Run - Round 4
This was always going to be an exciting finale to this tourney, with so many players capable of winning. Conditions were not the most difficult so attacking play was very possible, even with some tricky pins. Ian McKinley has been struggling with his health for a long time and he did well to finish the event, carding a 74 today to finish tied 18th, a very creditable performance. Charlie Roberts led after the first half of the tourney, but suffered a disappointing second half, finishing with two rounds of 70, but still good enough to claim 4th place. Nate Arteezy concluded the event with a 68, a repeat of his third round score, to earn 3rd spot one stroke ahead of Charlie, his best finish of the season. Bob Fletcher looked to have a good round going but had a disastrous 6th hole, taking a triple and never recovering, finally coming in with a 69. That was enough to finish second, one shot clear of Nate and four behind the eventual winner. That was Mark Lipping who signed off with the best round of the day, an excellent 65.
Let's hope we have another close finish this week in the US OPEN at Hazeltine National...

Event 24 - 1970 U.S. OPEN at Hazeltine National - Round 1
As is traditional with this Major, the course played tough and the conditions were tough also. Only 2 players managed to break par today - Tony Jacklin and guest player Mark Lipping, fresh from another tourney win last week and almost back to his best form. Mark's opening 68 left him three strokes clear and he will be the player to beat it seems. Bob Fletcher was unable to reproduce his recent good form but his 75 saw him sharing 9th spot, so not completely out of it just yet...

Event 24 - 1970 U.S. OPEN at Hazeltine National - Round 2
A couple of late starters from the opening round now feature at the business end of the leaderboard after Day 2. Ian McKinley battled through his health issues and post-op trauma to card a mistake-ridden 80 and then a sterling 68 to lie 8 strokes off the pace. Roger Instell is one shot ahead of Ian after shooting a 71 and a 76, and he shares 7th place with a couple of PGA pro's and also Bob Fletcher, who improved on his first round score by recording a 72 today. Opening day leader Mark Lipping also hit a 72 but his lead has been reduced to a single stroke due to Tony Jacklin's 70. Tensions will mount over the weekend as the event reaches a climax, but who will hold their nerve and leave Hazeltine with the US Open trophy?!

Event 24 - 1970 U.S. OPEN at Hazeltine National - Round 3
The slick, bone-hard greens caused a few problems today, especially for Bob Fletcher who shot a catastrophic 83, and Roger Instell who didn't do much better with an 81, so effectively those two are out of contention going into the final round. Ian McKinley played well for his 71 to take him into a tie for 6th, but with eight strokes to make up on the co-leaders it looks like any winning hopes he may have had have all but disappeared. Overnight leader Mark Lipping also carded a 71, but he now shares the lead with Tony Jacklin due to the latter's 70, the joint best round of the day and an indication of how difficult it was to score in this round. So it all comes down to the final round...

Event 24 - 1970 U.S. OPEN at Hazeltine National - Round 4
There was a close finish today, but first the news about the also-rans. Roger Instell signed off with a 91 - enough said. Bob Fletcher had to battle for a 77 and would be glad the week is over, finishing as he did tied 66th. Ian McKinley had begun the event poorly and he ended it in the same vein, carding a 78 today to conclude the tourney sharing 24th spot, an admirable effort. Charlie Roberts was one of only three players to complete the event under par, his 74 today rewarding him with 3rd place, a commendable performance.
And so to the co-leaders going into the final round. Mark Lipping produced a late surge towards the end of his round to post a 71, a very good score considering the hostile conditions. Unfortunately for Mark, Tony Jacklin went one better with a 70, his third of the week, and that was good enough to clinch the US Open Championship!

Event 25 - 1970 CLEVELAND OPEN at Aurora Field - Round 1
If I'd remembered how difficult this course could be I would have made the conditions a little easier, but too late now! None of the 'guest' players could produce a sub-par round today, Carl Bishop carded a 76, Charlie Roberts and Ian McKinley had a pair of 74's, while Nate Arteezy and Bob Fletcher battled away for their 72's. With the opening day leader shooting 65, and with the weather forecast not promising, scores could get worse and a hard, grinding week beckons...

Event 25 - 1970 CLEVELAND OPEN at Aurora Field - Round 2
Charlie Roberts hit the joint best round of the day, an impressive 65, to muscle his way up the leaderboard and into a tie for 20th, just five shots behind the halfway leader. At the other end of the scale Ian McKinley carded another 74 to leave him firmly entrenched at the bottom, and I can only put his poor form down to ongoing health issues, but lots of kudos to Ian for continuing to play. Nate Arteezy played well today for his 69, and is now two strokes adfrift of Charlie, while Bob Fletcher also improved on his opening performance by carding a 70, leaving him a shot behind Nate and sharing 50th place. It's going to take a big effort from a guest player to deny a professional the win this week, but stranger things have happened at sea...

Event 25 - 1970 CLEVELAND OPEN at Aurora Field - Round 3
Gale force winds, driving rain, and a sodden course would provide a difficult challenge for our intrepid band of golfers today, so low scoring was not anticipated. This was confirmed when Ian McKinley trudged into the scorer's tent with a 77. Bob Fletcher was playing well until the 13th hole jumped up and bit him badly, and he eventually came home with a not-too-shabby 73 to leave him in a tie for 55th place. Nate Arteezy's round of 72 could easily have been much lower with a little more luck on the saturated greens. As it was, he will start the final round sharing 40th spot, two strokes ahead of Bob and ten behind the leader, Frank Beard, winner of the Tournament of Champions earlier in the season.
