To celebrate the opening of the newly renovated North Course at TPC Toronto, we (me and Dario, a.k.a. csugolfer60 ) wanted to provide an interesting opportunity that’s a little different from other design contests. This is a totally open contest. Full credit to the plot and brief go to Dario.
The brief:
The owner of this plot considers himself “George Crump 2.0”, and they’re obsessed with creating a golf course that challenges the best players in the world – and provides an un-matched viewing experience for spectators and TV / streaming audiences. With an unlimited budget, and an order to create one of the most “dramatic and demanding” courses ever, you’ve been tasked with creating a modern “Stadium-style” golf course on the plot provided.
For those who may not be too familiar with stadium golf, this is a golf course that –
1.) Prioritizes the spectator experience (both for walking the course and viewing players).
2.) Provides good “framing” for TV / stream viewing.
3.) Creates drama for tournament play.
Rules:
There are only 2 “rules” to the competition –
1.) The golf course cannot exceed the boundary of the plot (which is marked with a road).
2.) The golf course must maintain the feel of a “parkland” surrounding. Theme/textures/trees can all be changed as needed, but the result should try and replicate a southern Ontario feel.
Timeline :
Start whenever, publish whenever.
Deadline midnight ET on 30th September.
Some things that may help:
1.) Feel free to change the outer edges of the plot as needed – both planting and sculpting.
2.) While you cannot exceed the boundary roads with the golf course – you can feel free to move them as needed to help design the surrounding area, including changing direction, textures, moving them inward and outward and adding more roads.
3.) The property has been completely razed to start, but you have an unlimited budget for moving land, planting vegetation, building roads, clubhouses, etc.
4.) This is an entirely golf-centered club – nothing except a modest clubhouse is necessary – but there must be a practice facility that is suitable for a PGA Tour event. The practice facility can be outside the course boundary.
General guidelines that help for routing and viewing:
1.) Generally, if possible – try to keep the spectator routing on the interior, between multiple holes, so that spectators may view as many holes as possible with the least amount of walking.
2.) Viewing golf on TV provides very limited FOV and camera angles – which means that the viewer should be able recognize “safety” from “danger” relatively easily.
3.) Try to help spectators stay higher than the golf hole, allowing them to see as much of the hole as possible without having to move as much.
4.) Create “loops” where spectators can return to concessions / meeting points relatively easily and move between sections of the course without getting lost.
(Dario's) general guidelines that help for tournament golf and drama:
1.) Fair is boring.
2.) A well-executed heroic shot should come dangerously close to complete ruin.
3.) A “safe shot” should make the following shot significantly more difficult.
4.) Try to provide one thing to remember on each hole.
5.) 9 feet is a good distance from the edge of the green to put MOST of your hole locations.
6.) Rules were made to be broken. Be bold and different (while trying to be realistic).
The plot:
Building on the idea from Dream Team of premade plots and briefs, PC guys get the benefits of a file with the plot already there, whereas console guys will have to recreate from the image with dimensions - sorry, best we can do!
