PLAYPGATOUR (2019 Society)
This society aims to recreate PGA Tours from the past – the actual events and as many of the original courses that can be found on TGC 2019 that are good enough, and long enough, to be challenging. If you’ve ever wished you could compete against the professionals and legends of yesteryear, this is your chance. We start our journey in 1970 and you will feature on the leaderboards alongside names like Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus and many more. Can you match, or even beat, their actual scores? Now you can try! CoursesIn 1970 most of the tour courses were comparatively short and, if used on this tour, the scoring would be ridiculously low. Those courses that have been deemed too short, or are not of an acceptable quality, have been replaced by other courses, mostly ‘real’, that will provide a very stiff challenge. ScoringI have had to use revised game settings in an attempt to ensure that ALL round scores are on a similar level. You will NOT have use of the ‘lie grid’, ‘shot suggestion’, ‘exact wind speed’, or ‘shot preview’. The ‘putting marker’ will be a marker only and will show no information. You will, however, still be able to use the green grid. In 1970 no tournament winner had a four-round score of more than 17 under par, which roughly equates to 4 under par per round. So don’t expect any birdie-fests in any round. I have had to make par a well-earned score, so I will make conditions as difficult as possible, something for which I make no apologyl! Hopefully you will have to play very well to beat par – which is as it should be. If you enjoy a tough challenge - look no further! FormatThe season will be split into four sections, with a one-week gap between sections: Events 1 to 10 – Winter Trophy Events 11 to 20 – Spring Swing Events 21 to 30 – Summer Bowl Events 31 to 43 – Autumn Cup Complete season – The Grail of Golf Driving and Tee Shots The ‘Scout Cam’ will not be available. You will still see the hole flyovers (although this may change) and the hole overheads will still be available (the E key), and you will have to work out your aiming point using these only. PuttingThe closer your approach is to the pin, the easier it will be to see the grid and any existing borrows. For instance, a 30-foot putt will now be a lot more difficult because you will not be able to ‘zoom’ up to the pin to check for any slopes there. For much shorter putts the grid should be quite clear to see and therefore more makeable. You may find the different views using the V key may be of some assistance. It may also be helpful if you do not play alone (even use a ‘ghost’ if you can) as you can work out the green contouring by observing your partner’s approaches and the roll of their ball – but only if you have out-driven them and they hit their approach shot before you! FormatThis year The Old Goats Society operated their own very successful and fair handicap system – but this tour does not intend to use any handicaps, although this may change depending on the scoring. There are 43 events (including the 4 Majors) and each event will run from Monday to Sunday and consist of 4 rounds with no cut. Leaderboards will be posted on a Friday (Round 1), Saturday (Round 2), Sunday (Round 3) and Monday (final result) on the ‘Playpgatour’ forum here: playpgatour.freeforums.net/board/4/tournament-leaderboards. There will also be tournament previews. ConclusionI really hope this works out and the round scores turn out to be similar to the ‘real professionals’, we will see. Anyway, give it a shot and if your tournament score is only +6 you could still be well placed and earn a decent pay-cheque!
The Society will be available to join in about a week's time and we will be having 2 or 3 'trial' events in December.

Our first warm-up tournament will be scheduled to commence on Friday 11th December 2020, the day after I set up the PlayPGATour society, and will last for 7 days.
We will be competing in the 2003 JOHN DEERE CLASSIC and we will be using the actual course at TPC DEERE RUN for the event, which will last for 4 rounds.
It will be very interesting to see how the scoring works out!
Leaderboards will be posted in this thread as the tournament progresses.
Good luck to those brave enough to sign up and have a go!

From one of the PLAYPGATOUR participants...
"I think you have set the difficulty about right Bob. It is a challenge to make pars, and birdies are scarce. I found it took longer to play each round because I actually watched the flyovers to check the landing area off the tee. Gauging the wind is just a guess, and hitting the fairway off the tee is pretty important in these conditions. So I spent more time on the tee than usual. Not knowing the wind speed also makes sticking approach shots on the pin much harder. And the green firmness and speed makes it important not to get above the hole leaving a steep downhiller that may run 12-15 ft. past. So I enjoyed these rounds quite a lot. I like what you have done. Having to work to break par is the way golf is meant to be played I think. Managed to card my first albatross in TGC 2019 in R1 on H17. That allowed me to break par in that round."
And my response...
"Well Charlie, firstly very well done with the Albatross!! I'm still waiting for my first! Did you save the shot? If you did I'll ask Ian to make a video of it and post it here somewhere.
"I hit a normal shot instead of a chip when I was on the edge of the green to chip" - you're not the first and won't be the last to do that! With these settings your concentration must not waver or mistakes will surely follow, and they will more than likely cost you a shot or more.
"Having to work to break par is the way golf is meant to be played I think" - I totally agree! Ian reckons that playing with these settings is just like playing his normal real-life golf game which, sadly, he is unable to do any more.
"I think you have set the difficulty about right Bob. It is a challenge to make pars, and birdies are scarce" - this is where it gets tricky! Settings I select for one course may not be appropriate for a different course and the challenge for me will be to get it right for each tournament. I will have to take into account a few factors - course length will be an important one, location and likely weather conditions to add to the 'reality' and 'feel', and difficulty of the greens. I have already noted that very fast greens will be a 'no-no' for a couple of tour courses at least!
I would very much like our 'non-pro' scores to be mixed in with the real pro scores on the leaderboard, so I will also look at the actual event-winning scores to help me decide on the event conditions. So far, so good, although I may have scared a couple of players away from this format with the severity of the conditions this week. Having said that, I will not be pressured into changing what I want to achieve here, so my vision will remain intact!
Conditions have been relaxed a little for the next test event, the 1991 Memorial Tournament, but not too much I hope!!"
SO COME AND HAVE A GO IF YOU THINK YOU'LL ENJOY THE FORMAT!!

Here is the final leaderboard for the first test event, the 2003 John Deere Classic. None of us 'guest' players were able to deprive Vijay Singh of his victory - this time! Well done to Luigi Pecchia for his very creditable finishing position, and kudos to Charlie and Ian for their worthy efforts. As for Terry, Ray and myself, I'm afraid we will have to up our games if we're to have any impact at all on future leaderboards! Can't say it wasn't fun though!
The second test event starts today - the 1991 Memorial Tournament. Come and have a go if you like having fun!!

Our second TEST event, the 1991 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, is now underway and here is the early Round 1 leaderboard.
Corey Pavin sits on top after carding a very good 66. So far Charlie Roberts is the leading 'guest' player with a commendable 69, with Les Souter not far behind with a 71, and in the company of greats like Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. Ian McKinley couldn't sink any putts but still managed a 74, the same score returned by John Daly, and the less said about Terry Baldwin and yours truly the better!! At least they're in good company, level in last place with the late, great Payne Stewart who had a horrible 79...

Round 2 of Test Event #2, the 1991 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village
Charlie Roberts is mounting a serious assault on the top of the leaderboard. He followed his opening 69 with a more impressive 68 and is well placed for the weekend. Les Souter fought his way in with a level par 72 while a last hole disaster saw Ian McKinley repeat his first round 74 when a level par round looked on the cards. Ray Bradford found some form to record a respectable 71 while Terry Baldwin and Bob Fletcher again found all kinds of difficulties during their second rounds.

That's really odd, I can't think why it isn't showing. I'll make some enquiries...
Actually, try searching for Tour of England - that's what my society used to be before I changed it to PLAYPGATOUR - I wonder what that will produce...

Meanwhile, here's the latest leaderboard from the current test event, the 1991 Memorial Tournament...
Charlie is holding steady and is only 4 strokes adrift of the leader. Les Souter is mounting his own attack and is, himself, only 6 shots off the lead. Ian McKinley's 67 sees him move under par and into the top half of the leaderboard, while Ray Bradford's 72 keeps him in the lower echelons. The round of note came from Terry Baldwin who fired a superb 63 (it could have been even better but for a couple of missed tiddlers) that moved him up more than a few positions. Terry's score is currently the equal best of the event! Bob Fletcher had another round to forget and he is in a heavyweight battle with John Daly to avoid last place!
