Event 29 - 1970 GREATER MILWAUKEE OPEN at Erin Hills - Round 1
As anticipated, Erin Hills has not proved to be an easy course on which to score well, as all the guest players so far have discovered. The best performer of our group in the opening round was Randy Grant whose 70 rewarded him with a share of 14th spot, four strokes off the pace. In a huge bunch tied for 35th, after carding opening day 72's, are Hans Kunok, Ian McKinley, Mark Lipping and Olly Jose-Maria. Finally, Bob Fletcher, who was not too displeased with his 73, lies tied 53rd. All the guests have plenty of work to do if they are to achieve a decent finish come next Sunday, but it won't be easy...

Event 29 - 1970 GREATER MILWAUKEE OPEN at Erin Hills - Round 2
At the halfway mark it appears that it's going to take a superhuman effort for a guest player to walk away with a victory this week. Erin Hills' length is proving problematic and everyone is struggling to score well. Randy Grant's 72 and Roger Instell's 70, to go with his opening 72, sees them as the best placed guests in a share of 19th place - but only 5 strokes behind the leader. One shot further back, in a tie for 45th, after their 71's today are Mark Lipping and Olly Jose-Maria, while a further shot back are Bob Fletcher and Ian McKinley after their respective rounds of 71 and 72. Finally, Hans Kunok's 73 leaves him one stroke behind Bob and Ian. Although carding respectable scores the guests need to shoot lower to progress up the leaderboard - can they make a move over the weekend?

Event 29 - 1970 GREATER MILWAUKEE OPEN at Erin Hills - Round 3
One of our guest players has dragged himself clear of the mire of obscurity up to the high ground of potential glory. That player is Barney Buss whose hard-working 68 today now places him tied 3rd, just one stroke behind the joint leaders. Five strokes behind Barney, in a share of 20th, are Olly Jose-Maria and Randy Grant who carded respective rounds of 70 and 71. Roger Instell's second level par round of the event, a 72, has him a further shot back, while Bob Fletcher's 72 sees him lingering in a share of 47th place and hoping for a sub-70 in the final round. Ian McKinley, with a 76, and Hans Kunok, with a 77, are both having a week they would prefer to forget. So, it's all set up nicely for the tournament climax...

Event 29 - 1970 GREATER MILWAUKEE OPEN at Erin Hills - Round 4
Try as he might, Barney Buss was unable to catch overnight joint leader Deane Beman today, but still managed to sign off with his fourth sub-par score of the event, a 71, to finish in a tie for 2nd place, 3 shots behind the winner. The next best-placed guest was Roger Instell, way back in a share of 26th, as he too carded a 71 today. Bob Fletcher also recorded a 71 to conclude the event in a tie for 47th, while Olly Jose-Maria and Randy Grant struggled in with a pair of 77's to finish in a share of 70th spot. Mark Lipping's second 74 of the tourney meant he ended a forgetable week, for him anyway, in the unfamiliar position of tied 75th. Ian McKinley shot his third level par round of 72 to finish a stroke behind Mark, while Hans Kunok's 73 had him scratching his head wondering what's happened to his A-game...
See you at Oak Hill this week for the Westchester Classic...

Event 30 - 1970 WESTCHESTER CLASSIC at Oak Hill (East) - Round 1
Oak Hill didn't bare its teeth on the opening day which meant that good scoring was possible. Unusually, we have 7 joint leaders at close of play, including Hans Kunok and Ian McKinley who both played very well for their 67's. Lurking one stroke behind the leading group is Mark Lipping, and a further shot behind is Olly Jose-Maria. Bob Fletcher began with a solid-enough 70, while Barney Buss and Randy Grant hit satisfactory 71's. However, I can't help thinking that those teeth are going to make an appearance at some stage this week...

Event 30 - 1970 WESTCHESTER CLASSIC at Oak Hill (East) - Round 2
Ultra-fast greens are like Marmite, you either love them or hate them. After their performances today, I'm guessing that Randy Grant and Mark Lipping will be hating them, as respective rounds of 77 and 80 have effectively ended any interest of doing well this week. Ian McKinley normally enjoys quick greens but even he found them hard to negotiate as his 75 suggests. I imagine Barney Buss wouldn't be unhappy with his 69, a score that leaves him just about still in contention and just one stroke behind Hans Kunok who shot a disappointing 72 today, and also Bob Fletcher who was delighted with his 69. However, even the pro's were left trailing in the wake of Olly Jose-Maria who carded a majestic 63 to carve out a 4-shot lead at the halfway point - and it would take a brave man to bet against him walking off with the season's largest pay-out come the conclusion of the event...

Event 30 - 1970 WESTCHESTER CLASSIC at Oak Hill (East) - Round 3
Mark Lipping's misery continued with a 75 today, leaving him rock-bottom of the leaderboard along with professional Bunky Henry. Randy Grant hauled himself upwards with his best round of the week so far, a fighting 70, but he is still only in a share of 76th place, so he'll need a better final round just to cover his fare home. Ian McKinley's fine 68 elevated him into a share of 23rd spot and he will be striving to improve again in the final round. One stroke ahead of Ian, in a share of 15th, is Bob Fletcher who recorded his second 70 of the event, but if he is to win the Summer Bowl he will need to pull out all the stops in Round 4, as this is the last event of that series of tournaments. Hans Kunok's impressive 68 promoted him into a tie for 6th, seven off the pace, but he will need to produce a special final round to taste victory again. Olly Jose-Maria continued his fine form by also shooting a 68 today, a score that extends his lead to 5 strokes, but his nearest rival is now Barney Buss, who took all the plaudits in this round by firing a superb 65! The concluding round should be fascinating...

Event 30 - 1970 WESTCHESTER CLASSIC at Oak Hill (East) - Round 4
The final day had one or two wet and rainy surprises in store, the main one being overnight leader Olly Jose-Maria seeing his 5-stroke lead vanish without trace! This was due to two factors - Olly's relatively poor round of 73 today, and Barney Buss's very good 66 which consequently served up his maiden victory by 2 strokes from Olly and professional Bruce Crampton.
This result had more intriguing consequences but those are covered in the Summer Bowl thread under the 'Earnings' section of our Forum. Hans Kunok's 70 today rewarded him with a share of 6th place, while Ian McKinley's 71 saw him finish tied 26th. One shot behind Ian was Bob Fletcher in a share of 32nd after a lacklustre 73, and Randy Grant ended the tourney as he had started it, shooting a 71 to finish tied 70th. The big surprise was Mark Lipping finishing in joint last place after carding his second consecutive 75, and I can only conclude that Mark and Oak Hill East are just not compatible!

Events 21 to 30 - THE SUMMER BOWL
This was the final event of the 'Summer Bowl' series of tournaments. Bob Fletcher has topped the earnings for the last few weeks but, as the Westchester Classic event offered the largest purse of the season so far, it was quite possible that a different player would emerge as the Summer Bowl winner! Olly Jose-Maria looked a hot favourite to be that player, going into the final round with a 5-stroke lead, but it wasn't to be. Bob owes a debt of gratitude to Barney Buss for overhauling Olly's lead to snatch the $50,000 first prize away from Olly. That meant that Bob's comparatively paltry earnings from this tourney, $1,325, was enough to keep him ahead of everyone else and capture the Summer Bowl trophy by the small margin of $657!! The last 13 events of the season, beginning with the American Golf Classic at Firestone Country Club, constitute the 'Autumn Cup' - so who will win that trophy?!

Event 31 - 1970 AMERICAN GOLF CLASSIC at Firestone CC (South) - Round 1
With the weather forecast looking very unfavourable for golf, this round would give an early indication of how the week was going to go. Ian McKinley found it difficult but that wasn't completely down to the conditions, and a 72 was not an ideal start to the tourney for him. Randy Grant and Mark Lipping would be pleased with their day's work and a brace of 69's has them well placed in a tie for 5th spot. Bob Fletcher, who scrambled across the finishing line last week to capture the Summer Bowl trophy, began his pursuit of the Autumn Cup by producing a glowing 66, a score that surprised him more than anybody else! Bob's performance saw him out in front, but can he stay there...

Event 31 - 1970 AMERICAN GOLF CLASSIC at Firestone CC (South) - Round 2
With the wind blowing hard today scores were not expected to be low. Mark Lipping suffered the most, his 72 dropping him into a tie for 18th with, among others, Ian McKinley who played very well for a hard-fought 69. Two strokes ahead of this pair was Randy Grant who held his own with a level par 70, demonstrating that his game is gradually improving. Randy now shares 7th place, 2 shots behind overnight leader Bob Fletcher who struggled a little and could only card a 71, demoting him to tied 3rd, one stroke adrift of the new joint leaders.

Event 31 - 1970 AMERICAN GOLF CLASSIC at Firestone CC (South) - Round 3
So far it looks like a good week for the guest players as they all feature in the top 16 with only one round to play - but that round promises to be the hardest of the week. Ian McKinley is on level par after carding his second 69 of the event, and he was leapfrogged by Hans Kunok whose sparkling 66 elevated him into a tie for 13th. Five strokes off the pace in a share of 7th place are Randy Grant (68), Mark Lipping (66) and Olly Jose-Maria who surprised everyone by recording a disappointing 73. We have two new joint leaders - Barney Buss with rounds of 66, 68 and another 68 today, is locked together with Bob Fletcher who played one of his best-ever tour rounds today, a bogey-free 65. Everything is set for an exciting climax in the final round - who will prevail?!

Event 31 - 1970 AMERICAN GOLF CLASSIC at Firestone CC (South) - Round 4
I expected this to be the most difficult round, and so it proved. Before Hans Kunok drove off at the 1st he was under par - when he walked off the 18th green he most certainly wasn't, beaten black and blue by the course and conditions and coming in with a 78 to finish tied 41st. The same story applied to Olly Jose-Maria, but to a lesser extent, his 74 still good enough to earn a share of 14th. Barney Buss began the day as joint-leader and I'm sure he had high expectations when he teed off on the opening hole, but after also carding a disastrous 78 those expectations lay in ruins, and he had to settle for a share of 11th place. In a tie for 8th spot were PGA pro George Archer, late starter Roger Instell after a 71 today, and Randy Grant who achieved his best-ever finish by shooting a 72 in his final round. Mark Lipping's closing 71, Ian McKinley's concluding 68, a fine effort, and joint-leader Bob Fletcher's catastrophic and birdy-less 76, had them ending the tourney in a tie with 3 PGA pros, one of whom was the legendary Jack Nicklaus. A very disappointing result for Bob especially as he'd played so well for the first three days. Two strokes clear of this group was professional Frank Beard, whose 71 clinched the victory!!
See you next week for the 1970 season's final Major, the PGA Championship, at Cedar Ridge, where the conditions are forecast to be as tough as they were this week!!

Event 32 - 1970 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at Cedar Ridge - Round 1
This would probably be the best opportunity to make a good score this week. Bob Fletcher failed to take advantage of the comparatively kind conditions and a 74 was all he could produce, although it could have been worse but for an eagle on the 17th. Mark Lipping fared a little better, coming in with a 72, while Barney Buss carded a level par 70 which was still a decent total. I imagine Hans Kunok would be quietly pleased with his 69, but not as pleased as Ian McKinley who performed very well for a glowing 68. However, the opening day leader was Roger Instell after he carved out a super round of 67. I think Cedar Ridge is a super course, one that forces you to think your way around if you want to do well. It's going to be an intriguing week...

Event 32 - 1970 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at Cedar Ridge - Round 2
Strong winds and rain were the order of the day, but at least that should have made putting less traumatic. Bob Fletcher improved on his first round by shooting a level par 70, a score that moved him closer to the higher regions of the leaderboard. In a tie for 13th, one shot ahead of Bob, was Barney Buss after his frustrating 73, but both players are not completely out of contention just yet. Hans Kunok found himself in a share of 5th spot, just four strokes off the leader, when he carded a less than impressive 72 but he, too, is still in the mix. At halfway there are only two players under par - Mark Lipping who fired a fantastic 66 today to make an early move and, a single shot in front of Mark, Ian McKinley who became the only player to shoot under par in both opening rounds by registering a fine 69. At the time of writing there is no news of Day 1 leader Roger Instell, so his score could change the whole picture...
