Just published a TGCT blog post about template hole philosophy. This isn't an essay on templates or anything of that sort, i preferred to keep it more casual to make it a sort of reference point for anyone wanting to quickly understand templates and the history behind them. Hopefully this blog gives people the knowledge they seek regarding templates and maybe even help anyone who is wanting a design a particular template hole in game and needs a brief description of the characteristics. Enjoy. blog.tgctours.com/template-hole-architecture/

joegolferg did you ever finish the Fishers one? Would like to read it too if you did. Unfortunately this is the only written word I've done since last year judging the World Cup, and taking part in the CC and DT comps has taken up too much time. I'm still definitely doing it, I have loads of courses I want profile/review and Fisher’s will be the first. 👍

This 21 template reference will definitely come in handy too, I don't think I've seen even this short of a description of all of them in the same place. Though, I think I would credit MacKenzie for the Lido, but I could be biased

I also heard that when Mackenzie visited the site he thought that Macdonald and Raynor were off their rockers, wanting to build the actual plot for the course. He didnt think it would be possible. The main reason i did this list of templates is because, like you said, no list of all the templates in one place with a description to follow. I've made history.

I didn’t even know there was a Lido template, but it sounds like the winning hole Mackenzie designed for the contest, and the name of the competition that the Mackenzie Society still runs to this day. I wasn’t saying I’d credit Mackenzie for the Lido course, if that’s how you read it.

The Lido template takes after the par five 4th, a long hole with three separate fairways divided by water. I only recently found out that Mackenzie had won a competition to design the 18th. Great idea.

Clearly this is starting to take over my designing a bit. Just looked at my first three holes for the Rookie course and we basically have: Bottle, Redan, Narrows/Prize Dogleg. The principle is pretty sound!

Looking forward to this! Particularly like the sound of the Short and how you've done that, as well as a Maiden to finish. Also, just when I thought you couldn't go more bold with your Biarritz greens... Nice texture choices, too I am nearly there with Greenstone River as well, having found a really fun last few holes after a number of remodels. Hogsback/Lions Mouth 18th hole to finish will be entertaining if nothing else.

Biarritzes are probably my favorite, though I've never played one. In fact I'm not sure I've actually played any template holes that I know of, which is admittedly disappointing.
I will occasionally put in some templates on my fictionals, especially if I'm trying to emulate an older style. Pinelands has a Biarritz and a Redan. A few of my PG courses have them, and the par 3 course that I did for Trackman is full of them.
I'm not convinced they work in a video game setting yet but it is still fun to try. They at least provide me ideas when I'm stuck.
