THE TEMPLATE THREAD
A thread that is dedicated to the design styles of many golden age architects but mostly to the template hole philosophy and it's pioneers, C B Macdonald and Seth Raynor. This thread will come of no surprise to many of you, especially as I'm the one who has created it, but I feel that a thread like this needs to exist in a sun forum titled "course architecture." After all, it was C B Macdonald who ushered in the golden age of golf in America.
I've been creating template designs on TGC for about eighteen months now, and I've built most of them with a particular style that has been like marmite amongst the community - a love/hate sort of affair. The style I mostly build with is that of Seth Raynor, which features a lot of geometric shaping to the courses. I feel the nerd to do this not only because Raynor is my favorite architect of all time but, because since Pete Kolis left the community, nobody else built Raynor style golf courses. I am one in a thousand who builds to a particular style, so surely there's enough room for a template purist like myself? I say this because many times I've been told to try something different but, I've already been there and done that. I've built roughly 10-15 non template courses throughout this games history so far, and it just so happens that at the end of the TGC2 cycle I found a style that I love and enjoy and now wish to carry on for as long as it lasts.
I will update this thread often with tons of information, history, learning material, pictures (in game & real life) and architect profiles.

I thought I'd start with a picture of Raynor's Punch Bowl / Alps hole at Fisher's Island. We don't have a full links style template course available in TGC 2019. That needs to change ASAP.

I agree. For HB to drop the links theme for Highlands when links courses are golf's origins defied belief.

I agree. For HB to drop the links theme for Highlands when links courses are golf's origins defied belief. To be fair, the links theme was exactly like highlands, except worse. It's more an update to the links theme, which would mean the old links theme was obsolete. Most of the original themes also disappeared in the same way, with the exception of Autumn, which was changed up a bit to differentiate it from Harvest, it's replacement.

I absolutely love cape holes. They’re seriously fun to design.

On the subject of Punch Bowl greens I'd like to direct your attention the most bold version of it's kind. When I released my Greenbrier CC East course for the World Cup Design competition, I got many comments about the Punch Bowl hole I built, and people even questioning if anything like that hole would even exist in the real world. I present to you the Punch Bowl at Charles Banks's Hackensack Golf club - the sole inspiration behind my punch bowl at Greenbrier CC East...

The killer false front of the Redan hole at Raynor's CC of Charleston. The course will be hosting the women's US Open later this year.

Here's a great picture that perfectly shows off just how bold the features can be on a course from the template trio of Macdonald, Raynor & Banks. I've had many comments regarding a number of my courses questioning the severity of some of green sculpting. What I do, is what they did and non of them were afraid to be bold, on or around the greens. Check out the thumbprint on this 'short' hole at Forsgate Country Club designed by Charles Banks...

They weren't really concerned with blending the courses into the natural contours were they?
