Sure thing Taylor, I'll follow along. So I can’t enter this contest unfortunately because I started my course about 3 weeks ago but I will still take all the help I can get if you guys don’t mind helping out a rookie. You could put your RCR on the back burner just now and start a fantasy course to enter into the contest. A fantasy course is good for trying out the designer without being restricted to the look of an RCR. Just an option you could look into as contests can help with your designing.

Considering some form of involvement in this. Have always had interest in designing a course but have always lacked the initiative to actually try so I have no experience in the truest sense of the word. I do have judging experience though so if I don't work up the courage to try something new I could always fall back on that. I've got time to think about it, so I'll take advantage of that before I make a decision one way or the other. well a comp specifically aimed at rookies is your place to start trust me. Going up against these guys in an open comp was not fun. I’ve come back to try to avoid coming last again Just don't know if two months is going to give me the time to learn the designer well enough, turn ideas in my head into a physical re-creation, and have it all come together into something at least competent that doesn't totally embarrass me. Plus if the contest does start the beginning of September I'm on holidays the first two weeks, so I'd lose 25% of my design time right there. I know this is the sort of thing to finally inspire me into attempting a course, but it seems like a daunting amount of stuff I'd have to get through without having to rush something out there to get to 18 holes in time. Still debating it though.

boffoThere's no reason you couldn't start to learn the designer now. When it comes to how to use the tools, TGC2019 is expected to be very similar. Even if you don't complete any holes, you can still learn how to accomplish certain tasks - like drawing with splines, sculpting/smoothing, building greens and bunkers, and using the advanced-edit tool - that are expected to be the same in TGC2019. The only really new things are auto-fill of a closed spline and auto-generated light rough (like the way fringe works). Those new features should speed up the process of laying textures.

Also boffo your rangering experience is very valuable to your designing. You will undoubtedly make a very playable layout with any amount of experience using the tools. Once you make a hole or two it will become routine for you and the rest of your course will fall into place. Even if it's not the most stunning design in the world I know your course will have great bones because of your knowledge about courses. And watching tutorials and such can go a long way. If you have enough free time I'm sure you could make a fantastic course by the deadline!

Yeah, rangering and reviewing are both great experience for designing. I encourage any rangers or reviewers interested in designing to join this contest. Worst case scenario is that your course gets a ton of plays because of all the exposure.... and I’d hardly call that “worst case” at all! Heh....

boffoThe auto generated rough and filling in of splines are 2 of the MOST time consuming (and annoying) aspects of the current designer. With that improved I know straight away I’m going to save atleast 20% of time and that’s after only designing one course. Check out Erics design tutorials on YouTube and if you are interested I will send you the detailed tutorial notes that correspond to his episodes. Good luck!

It takes me between 5 and 10 minutes to line the outside edges of a hole with heavy rough...with no crimping of the autogen light rough.

I know you use shapes don’t you? Not splines.

Regardless of which method I use it doesn't take that long to dress out a hole with light/heavy rough.

Thinking of entering this comp. I've only done 2 courses but none on tour.

Thinking of entering this comp. I've only done 2 courses but none on tour. I think you should have a go in the contest, it looks as if you've got a fair idea of the designer. I seen your Greens of Woodhall Hills has had a lot of plays, so it seems that players like what you've designed. It'll be an opportunity to get feedback and hone your skills more. Have you submitted your courses to TGC Tours as I couldn't find them in the course listings?

I've sketched the first 7 holes of a new course on my iPad so just waiting for new game. Will be designing on pc this time.
