With TGC2019 and TGCT Season 5 both right around the corner, the VctryLnSprts-led TGCT Design Survivor heading into its exciting home stretch, and griff's design-veteran-laden Invicta Challenge slated to begin in November, the time is right to give the new guys a shot at a design title!

Back in March of 2016, the HB Studios Rookie Design Contest brought us high quality courses including the winner, Laurel Run by Jeremy Mayo (mayday_golf83 ). Since then, Jeremy has gone on to become one of the most renown designers in the TGCT community.
The goal of the contest is to encourage TGCT members to join the design community and to have a variety of quality courses for play on the Challenge Circuit in Season 5.
Who is considered a rookie?
Any designer who has no more than one course on Tour and no more than four courses accepted into the TGCT database.
How do I enter?
Just post that you're entering in this thread!
Is there a deadline to enter?
August 31, 2018, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time*
This is subject to change if TGC2019 is delayed
Is there a maximum number of entrants?
No. We're limiting based on some criteria, but will not lock out anyone who wants to participate and meets the eligibility criteria.
Is there any restriction or rules regarding theme?
No. You can design in any theme that you would like.
When can I start?
You can start any time after posting in this thread. Please keep in mind that there are several changes to the designer in TGC2019 (especially with regards to Trees, Plants and Grasses), but feel free to get a head start formulating your ideas.
Can I submit a Real Course Recreation (RCR)?
You can, but you will be at a disadvantage when it comes to points awarded for creativity.
Can I share my progress with the TGCT community before the publishing window opens?
Yes! We encourage it! We want this to be a social event, and we want quality courses. That means the designers will have free reign to reach out to anyone for advice and help learning the tools. As courses are in progress, be sure to check out my streams as we'll be going over some of the things to which we're going to be paying extra attention!
When is the submission deadline?
Courses must be published in The Golf Club 2019 Featuring PGA TOUR between October 1 and October 31, 2018.*
This is subject to change if TGC2019 is delayed
What is the event format?
Judging will be done in four stages:
- Group Round - the Top half of the field will advance (top 8, minimum)
- Quarterfinals - courses seeded 1 to 8, head-to-head knockout
- Semifinals - bracket-style knockout (no re-seeding)
- Finals - the last two courses standing duking it out for the title!
In each round, the scoring metrics will change slightly, as more components are added together. There will be more details about this to come at a later date (before September 1). The idea is to put an emphasis on the most important elements of course design before factoring in the extra stuff that separates two quality courses.
What are the main points of focus?
Neatness counts! A high premium will be placed on making the course look neat, or if it is intentionally rugged or unkempt, executing that look will go a long way.
Playability for the Challenge Circuit level player is a must. Players on the Challenge Circuit have a wide array of skill. A course will score well if it is suitable for many levels of play.
TGC2019 will allow players to choose the course settings before their round. How will that affect the judging?
The default settings will be weighted heavily during judging. Designers know their courses the best. Judges may modify settings in their rounds to judge how well your course handles varying conditions, but this will be part of the least-weighted scores. If a course is built with soft settings, you will not be penalized for playability issues if we crank up the firmness.
What do I get if I win?
The winning course will host a major event during Season 5 of the Challenge Circuit. The overall difficulty of the course will determine whether the course appears on CC-Pro or CC-Am.
What about quality courses that do not win?
Courses that advance to the quarterfinals (top 8) will host a Challenge Circuit event. Other courses submitted may be used on the Challenge Circuit Tour at the schedulers' discretion. We hope that each course submitted for this contest is worthy of being on tour, and if they are, they'll appear on the schedule.
I am not a contestant. Can I participate somehow?
Yes! We need willing judges! If you are interested in helping to pick a winner, let us know! We need the insights of players and designers alike to help pick the best course.
