Back in early 2016, I had been looking for ways to get my courses played and to get some valuable feedback. Up until that point, the couple of courses I had published had gotten some generic feedback like, "I enjoyed playing it, thanks for making it." One veteran designer did a good review of one my courses, but that was it.
The HB Rookie Contest gave me a chance to solicit some feedback while getting a few more people to play my course. I made some... uhhhh... interesting (?) design choices, but people started to warm up to my work (it must have been really, really cold back then). I received some helpful feedback from a few sources, and it was a boost of confidence that most of the criticism echoed my own thoughts about the course. There are things I thought i did well, some things I knew I could have done better, and a few things criticisms I didn't necessarily agree with, but could see where the criticism came from.
In short, I learned a lot. And I had fun.
Like mayday_golf83 said, the goal of this contest is to welcome unfamiliar names into the design community, have some really cool courses to play, and have a whole lot of fun along the way.

Count me in please Patrick.
I ran last in the national treasure contest and I am keen to give it another try. Thanks for organising this.

Count me in for a slot. In all seriousness though, for those who feel lost and want a second pair of eyes, I'm happy to give feedback on any betas folks want to send my way. I can't claim to be the authority on course design (far from it), but I can certainly give a breakdown of what I'd be looking for judging-wise, and how I'd approach things from a technical, strategic, or artistic perspective. great offer Matt. In a few months I will drop you a message

I'm not sure I want to start a course for this in TGC2. I'm too curious to see if (by some miracle) they fixed splines and if the autofill thing is actually helpful... I could spend hours laying down textures just to find that 2019 has a way to do the same thing in seconds. Is that stupid of me?

I will probably spend time planning it and thinking g about concept. 2019 is likely only weeks away leaving 2 months the to finish it. Tough one but I think a smart idea. Especially auto fill splines.

I'm currently working in the designer and don't want to rush into another contest as I don't know if I'll finish anything. But if there's any assistance needed by entrants or organisers let me know and I'll see if I can help out.

We won't really know how much starting early might help until the new game is out. The deadline for submission was set to Oct 31 to give everyone at least two months. If the game is delayed, the deadline can be pushed back.
Thinking back to the transition from TGC1 to TGC2, for me, starting anything on the earlier game would have been a complete waste, but for others, it would have been helpful.

I'm in! I haven't ever designed a course but I started one about 3 weeks ago, can I use that one? Does it matter if it's an RCR (my current one is). A new course should be started for this. I won't rule out RCRs, but I think they'll be at a disadvantage, especially when it comes to creativity.

Well my time is limited each week with 2 little kids so I will have to stick with my RCR since I don't have time to do 2 and just see how well I can do!

I can’t enter due to the approved courses limitation, but I’m happy to help as a judge if you’d like! Good luck all participants!

I think we need to let Griff enter so we can knock him out in the first round

1 quick question: I started a course a couple of weeks ago, could I use this as my entry? Please start a new course for this. When can I start? You can start any time after posting in this thread. Please keep in mind that there are several changes to the designer in TGC2019 (especially with regards to Trees, Plants and Grasses), but feel free to get a head start formulating your ideas.

Updated the OP to include current list of entrants and to answer a question about submitting RCRs.
Thank you to the folks who have offered to help. I will be reaching out to you within the next couple of days. If anyone else would like to help, please feel free to let me know. The more, the merrier!

Can I ask for some clarity around entrants being assisted by experienced designers please ErixonStoneJust so we are all abiding by the same rules I think we should make a formal decision on what is and what is not allowed. For example I know Griff refuses to look at any course that was part of a competition (which I agree with) as it would give an u fair advantage. Granted it was his competition but I still think some clarity on this wouldn’t hurt. If it’s a free for all that’s ok but at some point the courses will be separated by the assistance given and not the rookies actual efforts. Just a thought. I’m looking forward to having another go.
