It's funny Jim. This guy (wagtunes) reminds me so much of you when you first burst on to the forums. I'll take that as a compliment. LOL. Now if I can only shoot half as good as him I'll be all right.

Played the Sunday set-up. This is just my experience and view of the courses as a Euro player, it all depends on how you want to approach the course, naturally. Just wanted to give some possible tips. First hole you're looking to roll off the back of the green for a simple 5 yard chip, then a birdie. With the 3rd hole, you'll notice the pin is near the back, leaving lots of room at the front. Its also uphill to the pin so hit it short and the uphill will slow the role, a nice shot should get you within 10 feet. Quite a lot of the pins are well placed, giving you lots of scope to roll on to. Use loft to slow the ball, and remember that the bounce will add 6/7/8 extra yards (depending on club) to most approach shots (unless you're hitting wedges, in which case add a yard or two), so take that into account. Don't be afraid to play for par! The 6th, aim for right near the fringe, the bounce should take it close to the hole and if you're hitting an 8 iron as I did, loft it so it slows the ball near the hole. Also, don't be scared to go a club down if it feels right. The 8th was 171 yards plus elevation, but I had a 7mph tailwind, so going down to a 7iron with a bit of loft got the ball carried close to the hole but the loft created that drag on landing. Left a 16 foot putt but its a chance! 13th is an example of playing for par. Its very hard to stick that green, I went a club less than normal with loft and it still rolled off the back. If you can chip in, great, but take a solid par rather than gunning for the hole. The 18th, you'll be leaving a pitch for the third shot. Make sure you hit that quite short, otherwise you're going to run waaaaay off the back and may struggle to get par. Its a course of learning shorter approaches, understanding roll out on firm greens. Definitely one you can't pin hunt, and hit it five feet short and expect it to nestle. Learn loft, don't be scared of par or going down a club at times. My ghost is up on PS4 if you want to play against it, I show you how NOT to play 18th! Good luck all on this, it is challenging but you need to learn these kind of courses if you want to advance through the tours. Its frustrating but it will help develop your game if you can practice. Courses like this make your game more well rounded.

...ended up in the bunker behind the pin and flopped my way out, which I am pretty good at doing. Have had a lot of practice at it since I do it so often. In fact, I'd say that's the best part of my game... ^ This. The best part of your game happens to be the one that you have the most practice at. This was your first try at executing a high-lofted long iron. It's going to take some practice before you get the feel for it. Don't give up on it because the first time you tried, the result isn't what you expected. There's some info in the tips and tricks thread about how to adjust draw/fade to compensate for crosswinds. You do sacrifice some distance but the ability to hit the ball straight in high winds is a game changer. Keep practicing.

Well, I've figured out how to play this course to my strengths. On the near impossible greens to stick, I just let it roll into the bunker and flop my way out. I can usually come within a couple of feet and par the hole. On the longer greens, shoot short and let it roll towards the pin. If I have a long putt, again, try for birdie and settle for par. Playing like this, as long as I don't screw up my drives, I should shoot par on the Sunday course. My last two tries were +2 and +1 because of some stupid drives.
I won't tear this course up but with the two Thursdays I should be able to shoot 4 to 6 under for the whole tournament.

If anyone interested I made a tour for you guys to practice. Not looking to steal thunder from those who usually set these up, just figure if a couple or 3 of us set some up we will get a variation of winds to play being whats going to be a tough tournament.
R-1 Thursday - started around 9 mph winds, one of those hookey winds coming down from top left, 2'nd shot on par 5 hits bunker, so advise to lay if up in doubt r-2 Thursday - high winds on this one, seen 17mph ( I'm currently at 7'th hole, quit out to come here to let you guys have a go if you want, going back in after this post) R-3 Saturday - 1mph winds R-4 Sunday -- 10-16 mph winds
And pardon my poor scoring, trying to teach my self to use the Doyley marker more, especially on the downhill ones.
Hope i set it up right where you can re roll if doing poorly

It's funny Jim. This guy (wagtunes) reminds me so much of you when you first burst on to the forums. Which is why I'm trying to help him as much as I can. He's EXACTLY like I was when I first started this game. Practice and patience with this game and learning it's subtleties is key. It still frustrates the hell out of me(and everyone) at times..and I'm still learning the game as well. That's what makes this game the best golf game EVER produced on any platform. You can't just pick up a controller and master it in a weekend...and I think the spoon fed fans of all the EA titles(not pointing at anyone in particular) in the past don't like the fact that a game can actually defeat them. I was one of them.

Well, I played the tour that was set up.
73 66 71 76
Certainly not the worst I've ever done and in retrospect, this course would have smoked me for 80s and 90s back in August.
Sunday really screwed me up but a disappointing round one really was what kept me from breaking par as I shot +2 for the tour.
Highlights:
Eagle out of the bunker (I told you I'm great out of the sand. LOL)
When I kept off of the green on my 2nd shot I actually did better. It really isn't the firmness as much as the insane breaks that are killing me. There isn't anything close to an easy green on this course. I had one 5 footer with such a severe break that I missed it. Personally, I think that's a little on the unfair side but whatever.
I could play this course every day for 2 weeks until the event and I'm never going to do much better than maybe break par by a couple of strokes and that's not going to be anywhere near good enough to get me anything but another demotion strike. So I probably am going to withdraw from this one.
Thanks for all the advice, charts, etc. It's all helping but in eye dropper fulls. I haven't made any real progress in this game for over a month.
My scores since my first event here.
Billy Mays
Round 1 – 73 Round 2 – 71 Round 3 – 73 Round 4 – 67
Bob Barker
Round 1 – 68 Round 2 – 73 Round 3 – 70 Round 4 – 68
11/30 event
Round 1 – 71 Round 2 – 77 Round 3 – 74 Round 4 – 71
Q School
Round 1 – 72 Round 2 – 73 Round 3 – 73 Round 4 – 71
Week 10
Round 1 – 67 Round 2 – 65 Round 3 – 69 Round 4 – 68
Like I said, I'm pretty sure this is as good as I'm going to get having been playing since August and unable to nail putting down to any kind of science. My putting is pretty much mostly luck. I'll make 20 and 25 footers and miss 5 footers. Sometimes I guess right but most times I don't. I try to judge, based on the speed of the lines going across the green, how far right or left of the pin to aim. There just seems to be no kind of "formula". I come close (most times within 3 to 6 inches) but miss way more than I make.
Anyway, I'm beat. Played more golf today than I can remember playing in 30 years since the old DOS pixel days.
Time to take a break.

Sitting -14 after 3 rounds. Kinda underwhelming because I think I can do the 2 Thursday pins at around -16 to -20...the potential is there to score low those 2 rounds.

Guess a few of you have gotten some practice in now. This will be my first tournament on the tour (I'm excited!), and I'm just wondering what scores you guys will be expecting to see with the Sunday layout?

Welcome to the tour ohpebbles I fully expect to see a couple or few hit -10 on the Sunday pins. Myself I'm aiming for a consistent -5 to -7 if I keep at the setup. I'm averaging -2 now, hit -3 once. If I hit -3 in tournament then I'll be happy. I hope to do well -10'ish on the 2 Thursdays, hold my own on the Saturday and Sunday just keep it under or at par. ---------------- On a side note. I'm starting to use the aiming marker, especially for the downhill putts, at least trying to teach myself to. And I have to say if you hit it right it feels (i know there is no feedback on the controller) but it feels like the ball is on a rail so to speak. As opposed to my old way of just aiming and judging speed the ball feels more "loose" Hard to describe, but I can definitely see an advantage to using the marker properly. My old way I can always get within a couple feet even on very long breaking putts, but this marker thing if hit right feels really tight, I like it. Hope I didn't offend by calling it the Doyley marker a few posts back, it was meant as a compliment as I aspire to be half as good as him and he has been a proponent of using the marker in a recent discussion. Thanks Tim! I'm in the same bracket as you I reckon. -5 is the aim, but I'm more than capable of doing better than that.
I haven't used the aiming marker, but having read around on the forum I see that a lot of guys do. My issue with it is that I don't quite understand why you'd move it.. Is it just a visual representation of where you want to hit the ball? Or is there an actual purpose to it?

I always knew the yellow marker was there and used it only as a reference. I'm starting to get the mechanics of its use un more depth, and with a bit of practice the results are starting to show. From time to time my thumb becomes a hammer, but i hardly never leave more than 2 feet back putts. Once i learn the subtleties of reading breaks i will start making more putts for sure.
