Any particular theme or themes that are perhaps easier to work with for a beginner? Something that can still look good without having to use some of the more advanced level design tools. Boreal or Rustic would be my personal recommendations. Tropical isn't bad either, but people seem to either love it or hate it. Others will suggest Highlands, and it can be a good one as well as long as it fits your ideas. I would personally avoid Desert and Delta as a new designer. Both of those themes require a bit more in the way of planting and sculpting to make them shine, and both can be rather limited in choices for planting when the time comes. My advice would be to give thought to a concept. Think about how you want the course to look, where it might be located, a "style" you want to use with bunkers and such. Once you have a concept or vision in mind one of the themes should just jump out at you. Thanks. I have a very specific type of hole design that I like best, so I'm basically planning to go with something that suits my personal taste.

I've got no new courses on the go and I'm not sure if I will be able to finish one in time. So if you want a cast iron commitment to finishing an entry then I'm out for this one.
However, can I make a suggestion? What about having a full list of interested entrants (that can be allocated to vet / non-vets) but don't do the draw until the completion date? That way you avoid any byes. Also someone who is a maybe like me can try to get something done but if we don't it doesn't spoil the contest.

As much as I would like to accommodate that, that scenario brings about its own set of problems...much of which has to do with the behind the scenes part of the contest. There's a lot of ground work laid prior to the deadline that just wouldn't be possible if the field wasn't set until that point. Since one of the biggest complaints is that the judging process sometimes takes too long, this would have us a week behind before we ever got started. I would enjoy seeing you throw us another, Cogs, but completely understand if you feel like you would struggle to get one finished in time.

Hey Griff. Although I was just poking fun in my original post, I do appreciate the offer. It wouldn't be fair to enter a course that is 95% complete into the contest.
I do have one other project that I would like to do for TGC before I retire. It's a remake of my original course from early access...a very short, private layout with tiny greens and lots of water. It wont win the contest and it will not be nearly as detailed as my current WIP but I could probably have it done by years end.
If a remake is acceptable as an entry then count me in, Griff.

After finishing 2nd or 3rd last in the web design contest I guess I can't do much worse in this one lol.
Note to self, try to keep the course looking realistic and less fantasy. I've got a 27 hole layout in progress so hopefully I can find 18 decent ones out of that lot 😂

If a remake is acceptable as an entry then count me in, Griff. I can't go for the remakes, brother. That would be setting a precedent that could lead to some issues. As far as the other course being almost finished, it's still within the rules...and others will be using courses that are anywhere from half to almost finished.

Hmmm...well maybe "remake" was not the right term.
The course was done in the very first month of early access. I don't know if you were around then, but there wasn't really much to design. You could only pick from random pre-generated fairway and green shapes back then, there were no fairway or green brushes at all.
So basically all I will use from the old course is the routing of the holes and the overall plot elevation. New name, new theme (alpine to boreal), and every single fairway, green, tee and bunker has to be laid down now by hand.
It just seemed to me that doing this project might be more fair as it would require a lot more work on my end than the Finland course would at this point. However I don't want you to keep making exceptions, so I will respectfully remove my name from the list.
I am looking forward to seeing some good courses come out of this. Good luck to everyone involved.

Yeah the early access stuff was brutal It was. I'm glad that somebody else remembers those days. Since remakes are off the table (as they should be) and others are going to be doing developed but officially unpublished courses, I will submit my project for this contest. However I think that I am going to take it in a slightly different direction.

Gonna have to pass on this one Griff. Been messing around a bit on the designer these days but for the most part just taking a breather and playing some other games until TGC 2 comes out. Format looks like a ton of fun, and should provide some interesting results, so I'm sure I'll be keeping an eye on how it's going. Best of luck to those entering, and thanks for the invite bud.

If there's still a spot I'll take it. Last time I joined a design contest, I wasn't able to finish. This time, though, I actually want to finish a contest. If there's not a spot, however, I'd like to be on a waiting list if anyone drops out.
Thanks!
