So we've finally brushed off the fatigue of the Web.com Finals Contest and the Summer Showdown. It's time to fire the GNCD up and close 2016 out with a bang. This is going to be a little different format, but hopefully we can all have fun with it. Sign up in this thread to be a contestant.
Details:
The format is going to mimic a soccer/futbol league. The opening round will be in groups. The number of designers in a given group will depend on the total number of entries, but striving for 4 designers per group. There will be a panel of judges that will alternate judging the groups. Each course will be judged against every other course in it's group round robin style. 3 points will be awarded for a win, and 1 point will be awarded for a tie (which will RARELY happen). At the end of the group stage judging, the top 2 courses from each stage will advance to a knockout round. in the case of a tie, the first tiebreaker will be the head-to-head matchup in the group stage judging. If that was a tie, then the courses will face a "sudden death" judging by the panel. The knockout rounds are win and advance. All judging for the knockout rounds and the finals will be conducted by the judging panel. There will, however, be a popular vote between the final 2 courses in which the community selects the "people's choice". There will be a special award for that course, but IT WILL NOT BE THE OFFICIAL INVICTA CHAMPION. Likewise, there will be a special award to a "rookie" designer that has: A) never entered a contest or B) never had a course featured as a venue on tour.
Groups will have a "seeding" of sorts. The field will be divided into "vets" and "non-vets". Status is determined by number of courses published and total plays/ratings (with plays being the main factor). If you are designer that has only published 3 courses and all 3 have 1k+ plays and been featured as tour venues...well, you're likely going to be a vet. On the other hand, if you're a designer that has published 18 courses and all have low play totals with none being on tour...well, good chance you're going to be a "non-vet". While I always try to be objective, at the end of the day your status is up to my discretion.
If the goal of 4 designers per group is met, each group will be made up of 2 "vets" and 2 "non-vets". In the case of other numbered groups then the groups will be weighted to advantage the "non-vets". For example, in a group of 5 the group would consist of 2 "vets" and 3 "non-vets".
Designers are allowed to use whatever theme and difficulty setting they prefer. That being said, keep in mind that difficulty can be subjective with the judges. A course playing too hard or too easy can effect the way an individual judge scores your course. We try our best not to have that be a factor, but to say that it may or may not have an effect on a judge's experience would be naive. At the end of the day, just make good choices. If your course plays tough because of good design choices you'll be in great shape...if your course plays tough because you have a bear blocking the tee box or your greens look like a traffic light, well...just sayin'.
Knowing that we're getting closer to the release of TGC2, I'm going to do something a bit unorthodox. We all have courses sitting in our unpublished que collecting dust. Sooooo....designers will be able to use a course that has been started, but not one that has previously been published or a version of an already published course. By all means a designer can start from scratch, but if you have a good idea that needs to be finished, now is the time to break it out and let it see the light of day. Likewise, designers are allowed to have courses beta tested, but please use a name that doesn't identify your course in such testing. Myself or judges will not be involved in beta testing your courses or giving feedback in any way other than in judging.
Now the good stuff. Registration is open now until November 15, 2016 or until we have 32 participants...whichever comes first. Ultimately looking for at least 16 to have 4 groups of 4. Courses are due at 12 am CST on January 1, 2017. That's 2 months and some change, guys...plenty of time to get a course out.
The champion as decided by the judging panel will have their course featured on tour as well as receive an Invicta special edition watch. Said watch will be Fed/Exed by me at the conclusion of the contest. If you're not familiar with Invicta watches, then it's worth a Google. They're nice and not cheap. If you don't want a watch you can sell it, pawn it, re-gift it, or tell me to keep it.
All questions will be answered in this thread or via PM. Sign up now, folks....let's close out 2016 in style!
