After my initial trepidation in entering, I'm now pumped to see how this goes. I spent probably 5-6 hours yesterday watching scampi00 's beginner tips videos (thanks man, huge help) and starting a fresh course from scratch while NFL Redzone was on in the background. Now every time I flip on the Golf Channel to watch a tournament or highlights, and see whatever hole is being played, I start thinking about how some of the design elements of the hole could be used - I think I'm starting to catch on to why so many of you guys really enjoy doing this. Hope whatever my final product is comes out decent, because there won't be a lack of effort going into it. Thanks for organizing @griff, making a commitment to seeing this through is opening a new door to enjoying the game that I haven't fully explored yet and am so far really enjoying.

I came up with a setting yesterday morning along with 2/3 of the course name. Spent several hours in the afternoon and evening getting started on things. Ended up doing nothing except work on creating the aforementioned setting. Not a single hole layed down yet, but too much focus on extra eye candy which isn't part of the course and most of which won't even be seen as you're playing.
For now still leave me on the fill a spot if you need somebody list, as I have no idea how things will go once I start focusing on the actual course.

Glad they help. As to your second point, whenever I'm golfing in real life now or watching on TV, all I do now is pay attention to course design. Where does fairway meet rough, rough/deep rough, how are the bunkers made, how does the fairway curve, what is each hole trying to accomplish so on so forth. Keep at it. It's a blast.

Where does fairway meet rough, rough/deep rough, how are the bunkers made, how does the fairway curve, what is each hole trying to accomplish so on so forth. Keep at it. It's a blast. Absolutely, same here. I find it fascinating how there can be no perfect golf hole. Good golf course design involves so many different elements. If you take a single hole in isolation then you can see how a long hitter may play it, how a short hitter may play it, how position on the fairway influences how effective you can be with your approach shot, etc etc. You may find that being further back, or to the side, might give you either a better angle or a flatter lie. If the slopes take you towards danger and the fairway is helping you go that way then the benefit of being on the flat can be massive. Or even if the fairway helps you away from the danger then to hit close you may have to aim at the danger... both valid approaches to add difficulty to a hole. Just scratching the surface with that example. But then take strategy on a course as a whole. You shouldn't employ the same tricks/rewards on every hole. You can benefit the long and straight hitter for the first 5 and then on 6 present what looks like a familiar drive, only to put that long hitter out of position on the next shot... as I said, find this sort of thing fascinating. There is no formula for creating a course, every course has elements of great golf design, but to my knowledge no course anywhere covers them all. That is why, unlike any other sport, every arena in golf is so wildly different. I also find that I cannot drive through countryside without looking at fields/rivers/whatever and thinking "I'd put a hole right there using those trees and that water..." wherever I go I see golf holes ... tbf I think that has been the case for a LONG time for me

I'll see land, and in my mind I'm visualizing how the brushes would lay down and how the hole would look. It's crazy....lol

Hey @griff absolutely love that face by my name in the OP. As of now, count me in, and as late as november the 14th I'll give you the definitive answer, so you can jump in with an alternate designer

Count Me In.......just started a new course today, I think it will fit the contest nicely. The course will be called The Marsh at Sandfly. It's a Low Country Georgia course with as the name remarks, lots of marsh and few contours. I think I will be in the newby section, but I guess that's up to you guys. Update: This course is literally carved out of the Low Country Marsh Lands of Sandfly Georgia (Savannah). Here are a couple of photos to give you an idea, it's early in the design, so not to many bad comments ... LOL. I lived in the area for a few years and this is a pretty true representation of some of the rustic Marsh courses located there.

since others have begun to talk about their courses i may as well spill a few beans on mine.
it's very heavily inspired by the older type of U.S. Open venues, like Oakland Hills and Winged Foot, with mostly narrow, straight fairways. a few holes were also inspired by local courses, like 5, 8, and 11, as well as 12, which drew heavily from a specific hole on TPC Sawgrass (no it's not an island green).
i feel it's slightly unfair that my project has been going for 3 weeks while lots of others are just now starting so i'll probably cut off work on it sometime in the middle of December provided i don't have it finished by then.
good luck to all who will be in this.
