For me it was very clear, the platform was built, I took several days of just wandering and side quests until I finally went for it. The minute I go on the platform (or when I set Sturges -minutemen, in motion to prepare the platform, little fog in my memory) there were some text prompts and it asked if I was sure I wanted to continue and doing so would make me a permanent enemy of the BOS.
I could have at that point backed out and just went on as if before.
You will know when you are there. But if you haven't built the platform yet you are good to do whatever.
I have written down the save I made just before I proceeded, fast traveled to Sanctuary and went for it "North End-4d 14h 7m" so I can find it if I want to try another faction.

I'm waiting to figure out exactly where I have to make the decision of who I can join. I got the railway to help me with that chip. I haven't built the platform yet. Because I chose the railroad, have I made my choice? I just want to make sure I make a master save at the point of no return so I can go back and play each faction. I feel like I'm close to the point..just don't want to miss it! Also loving the mods...just dl'ed the wasteland storms mod and it's epic. Tell me you've done enough quests with the railroad to unlock ballistic weave perk. One of the best perks in the game. Lets you increase armour to under armour, military fatigues, suits etc. Ballistic Weave I've done a few tip vids on my main channel if you guys are interested. Settlements Supply Guide Picket Fences Magazine Locations (These add buildable items at your settlements)

My plan is to pick a faction and do my main playthrough with that one (side quests and main quests). Then once I have done everything I think I can possibly do, I'll go back and do the main quest line for the other factions.
(Sort of) SPOILER BELOW!!!
Currently leaning towards the Railroad.

My goal is to not touch the main quest for a long while and focus on side quests. Squeeze everything out of all the factions before I make the decision.

you know...yesterday I just straight up shot Preston in the face. Didn't kill him of course but it made me feel better for a little while. Wasn't even my companion. I just saw him in Sanctuary and was like "You suck man... here...have some face bullets on the house!"

I decided to go postal in Diamond City for a few minutes.. Also, I went to Diamond City on Christmas Day and there were decorations and Christmas trees all over the place with some special dialogue as well. Nice touch. I thought this would be a good time to snipe the mayor in his press box from ground level. Bloodbath ensued. I reverted my save of course like nothing happened.
Good times to just save, then go nuts and see what happens.

reebdoogWould have used the quotes but I thought I was the only one posting, CC beat me lol I just did something similar. The Covenant mission is bugged for me, I cant get the quest or into the place at all. So I walked up to the guy sitting at the desk ("dan" or whatever his name is), and shot him in the face..it worked, the doors flew open, everyone came out shooting and I killed them all. Then continued down the road, found a way up on the freeway and just walked a long way down, stopping at intervals, pulling out my .50 with recon scope and had great fun smoking raiders and mutants from long distance. Also at the end of that found a garden with a friggin deathclaw on a roof, and then proceeded to tour a large area going from roof to roof. Found a hell of a lot of unexplored territory today via that freeway and roofs. Guess the BOS lives another day, never got around to killing them today.

BOS will die in this playthrough.
Next playthrough? I'm going to be a freaking maniac and go BOS the entire way while murdering anyone that even slightly annoys me. Yeah...the cold got to me.

so I found some mods for my sniper rifle... Very happy. It's got a 20% damage boost already but now has a suppressor, long tactical scope, 50 cal, ported barrel, marksman stock...pretty much all the jazz to make me a happy hunter man. YAY FOR FINDING MODS ON OTHER PEOPLES STUFF!

Which sniper rifle are you using Reeb? I would be curious as to what mods are everybody's favorite at this point too?
I'm having great fun experimenting with different weapon mods. I have so much junk I know I can keep creating them. Can't help myself, I need those battered clipboards

I've just installed Nexus Mod Manger yesterday and now need to ban myself from the site.
Using Touch of Green (slightly desaturated greens) Settlements Expanded and just installed
Homemakerand LOVING IT..currently building an Institute based house, love the clean walls, floor, big glass windows.
I'm Not reeb but I'll chime on the sniper rifle.Using a fully modified Reba to make it a .50. Long recon scope. I can't put a suppressor on it though, love the sound. I have another that I picked up I may suppress

I remember trying it on FO3 think it misses the point a little. thats just me tho.

I've got a really nice reshade on that I simply can't play without, realistic lights, a really nice texture mod for the outdoor textures (can't recall the name but it's great), the new storms mod, a few 4k weapons textures that are nice, 4k pipboy that is really nice too... mostly graphics stuff. My favorite is still Lowered Weapons. It puts the weapon DOWN instead of always pointing it everywhere you run. SO much better. I have the conversation mod that actually puts ALL the dialog in a list instead of just the little wheel you normally get... that kind of thing. Tweaks, nothing game breaking.
The sniper rifle I am using is one I pulled off of a bad guy pretty early on. Can't recall the name but it does an extra 20% damage on it's own. Was pretty standard with a medium scope when I got it.
I don't actually have the perks to make all the mods on it yet but I've found other guns and simply taken the mods off and put them on mine. Bought one in diamond city that had the 50 cal mod, found one with the long ported barrel, found the suppressor and the tactical scope too. Im' actually not using the suppressor right now. I have the other muzzle...whatever it's called...looks like a little nub on the end..
All I know is that when sneaking its like a one shot head shot kill on super mutants, 2 shots to the body so far at level 24.
