I'm going to try to recreate a course called The Grand, in Queensland Australia. It's a private member's club and it's an incredible course, I've played there lots and know the course well. My just finished course Numinbah Valley Golf Club tgctours.proboards.com/thread/30628/numinbah-valley-golf-club was inspired in part by The Grand (including lots of the backstory I made for it). It hosted the 2002 Australian Open (probably due to the influence of Greg Norman who designed the course and is a founding shareholder) I have never done an RCR before. I'll try to build it from maps, photos on the internet, my own personal photos, and my memory. If anyone has any good ideas for resources for getting be better data such as survey / land height data then I'd love to hear it. I'll do some research on that... I'll probably throw in some fictional back tees for playability reasons. Would be interested to hear if anyone's interested in my posting updates here, I'm never really sure if anyone cares about these under construction threads. Any general advice or more specific advice when it comes to real course recreations is very welcome.

Looking forward to this given the exclusivity of the club.

Going to be fun trying to recreate some of the bunkering. Haha I may have bitten off a little more than I can chew.

I have made a few RCRs myself, and know they can be difficult to create without using LiDAR data and such. It's also really rewarding when you pull it off!
I'd recommend using Google Earth, as you can get elevation changes and distances from one spot to another in that tool.
Looking forward to this, for sure.

Hi fargoAre you on PC? Reason I ask is I have done the LiDAR and OSM import into my unpublished files on TGC 19, I’d be more than happy to send you the file for you to complete the course. The LiDAR is great but the OSM from memory is slightly off so would need some massaging of the spline points in the designer to get them right where they need to be. I played your Numinbah Valley course last night and you captured the look really well so I think you’d do a great job with my file. I live not even 5mins from The Grand but have never had the pleasure of getting a game in there, been out there a few times and the place is mint though and looks to be a very short and challenging layout.

Oh wow, I didn't even realise there was lidar data publicly available in Australia. I'm actually on PS4 so I don't think it will be useful to me at the moment. I actually have virtually zero knowledge of how lidar / osm works (I don't even know what osm is). I'll see how I go doing it freehand, if I can't execute then maybe I'll have a think about trying a lidar version down the track, maybe I'll get the next version of the game on PC. Yeah it's virtually impossible to get on there if you're not invited on by I member. I'm fortunate that a family member of mine is a member and so I play every time I'm back up in QLD. There's heaps of other nice courses around the area though. Thanks for playing Numinbah Valley and I'm glad to hear you think I might be able to pull this one off. That's only my 3rd course, first one was rejected, second was accepted, and third is tour worthy. So tracking in the right direction! But I haven't received much feedback on the course yet and I want to continue to get better, any comments or feedback are very welcome, good or more importantly bad. Thanks mate

The image above shows all the LiDAR data available for Australia highlighted in purple, it’s a shame that most of Victoria isn’t covered and a few other areas with some pretty well known courses. OSM stands for Open Street Maps and it’s like Google Maps with the added functionality of being able to ‘tag’ landmarks, roads, golf courses etc… See the image below is my tagging of The Grand. By Combining the LiDAR data and OSM tagging and importing into the TGC designer you’re 70% of the way done with an RCR already, just need to fine tune the splines, plant and detail everything up as best you can. It really is amazing It’s a shame it’s only able to be done on PC but definitely worth it and the designer on PC is 10 times better too in every way so definitely worth getting a PC edition if you’re able mate.

LiDAR and OSM gives you the course and elevations. After that it’s a case of smoothing out the bunkers and greens, as LiDAR isn’t great at granular stuff, good enough for fairways but greens are only at 1.5m so has “gaps” where it looks as though you have Tourette’s when microscultping. I’ve got a LiDAR/OSM plot of Hamo island and I’ve sculpted it and now needs planting. A year later I’m still working on it. tgctours.proboards.com/thread/29624/wip-hamilton-island-golf-club

Yes the beta posted in that thread is the latest published course. I’ve smoothed out a few more bunkers and sight lines but no planting yet.
interestingly enough Hamo island is planted with the airport etc, but Dent Island where the course is is fairly rudimentary.

Thanks, interesting to see this - an unplanted real course.
Stretch 13, 14, 15, 16 - wow. I imagine when doing a RCR from lidar data it's acceptable to fix things up like the blindness on 16? Love the recreation of Hamilton itself btw.

16. I might plant it out and decide depending on other photos I’ve seen of it. Rick Shields did a play through in 4 parts and I’ve taken a ton of stills from it

Hey Chris, not sure if you know about this tool www.provisualizer.com/I’ve had a quick play to check out elevations etc, but haven’t done too much with it. If LiDAR is available I’d be using that as my first draft.
