Creating this thread to document my progress on my rookie contest entry, Runamok. I began by working out the routing, breaking down the course into 4 par 3s, 4 par 5s, 4 short par 4s and 6 longer 4s, and making sure each type of hole doesn't see the same wind twice. For example, if one long par 4 runs north, another later on runs south. Ran through a few iterations with paper cutouts (pic of one included - ignore the hole numbers on it because they're nonsense) and then dug in. Once I got in designer and fine-tuned the routing I began exploring a Pinehurst-like style with scraggly, sandy areas - trying to get in a groove of texturing and bunker splining there. The idea is for the Steppe theme to eventually be buried beneath textures, planting, and foresting, and reveal itself selectively in the sandy waste areas. As of now it's feeling like it's somewhere in Texas, which wasn't the thought but it's honestly kind of working, and takes things away from a Pinehurst knockoff. The course is all about options off the tee and angles games based on pin placements. I want to toy around with numerous sets of playable tees that show different looks on each hole, not the traditional back-middle-front. I usually go for tough tight and nitpicky but this will be wider and gettable for sure.
