We are nearly 1 year into PGA Tour 2k21's existence. After reading through the designer burnout thread, I really thought about whether or not I was burnout from designing, or burnout from the designer itself. The next day I found myself sketching courses and looking at plots of land and realized it truly was burnout from the designer. Please let me preface this by saying the 2k21 designer is brilliant. This game has helped produced some of the best designs I have ever seen and has personally opened doors in the real world I never thought I would see. With that being said, the designer has yet to see one item updated since release and with no information on a next version, I thought it would be a good time to really gather mine and others thoughts about what could make the Designer better in the next installment. The list below is items I would love to see and although some may seem unlikely in any version, I think it's fun to throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks. I hope others will add items to this list!
Textures -
▶️ Ability to paint textures by the texture themselves as well as a property that includes the type of lie you would typically get. An example of this would be the first cut which typically leads to flyers. (95-105%). Second cut or US Open rough could be 70-90% but also have a severely reduced spin. This would also mean an ability to paint over a rough or fairway texture for example with burnt spots or something similar that wouldn't necessarily impact the lie.
▶️ Ability to have unlimited textures for each course including textures that vary by hole. Certain types of bunkers could be different from hole to hole or by type. This would allow for the ability to have a beach, green side bunker and fairway bunker
▶️ Customizable textures via a Sharepoint or public place for uploading. This has been done in other games.
▶️ Ability to change the textures of bunker lips. This would include pot bunkers and fescue faced bunkers such as new renovations at Winged Foot or Baltusrol.
▶️ Water textures. Ability to build streams, flat ponds, lakes and oceans with waves.
▶️ Customizable roads and pathways with sharper edges. Roads that have dividers allowing for main roads or highways
▶️ Ability to show divots in certain areas and show them in different patterns
▶️ Ribbon cut (two tiered) fairways and criss cross fairway patterns and greens such as TPC San Antonio
Objects -
▶️ Objects that can rotate in any direction
▶️ Place to upload, customize and share objects if possible. Objects could also have interchangeable colors and textures. As an example, a house could be ten different colors rather than the certain preset. Example would be Planet Coasters ability to make custom buildings.
▶️ Trees and bushes need to have larger variances in heights but also in terms of widths and different parts of the tree allowing you to create different looks within the same trees
▶️ Customizable pins and flags. This includes the height, type of pin and also color or shape of the flag. An example of this would be Merions wicker baskets, Warwick’s Trina glue flags and the double flags of friars head. Pins can also be metal, wooden or tiered.
▶️ Customizable tees. Fully customizable colors for all pre generated tee markers. Customizable tees made from shapes similar to how this is handled in games like Planet Coaster. Customizable tees were done as early as Links 2003.
▶️ Objects with certain characteristics like cars that can be interchangeable with color and perhaps scaled if necessary
▶️ Fescues and long grasses must be viewable from a distance and move like trees. Wind swept grasses will be and look amazing
▶️ Flags on the golf course added as objects
▶️ Allow for curbing to be added to roads and cart paths. Allow for dirt paths that have a less defined edge than asphalt
Functionality-
▶️ Ability to create shapes that are completely squared off or completely rounded. This obviously depends on the Engine, but APCD 2003 had the ability to manually add spline points to create sharp or rounded edges which also allowed for Pot Bunkers, Curbs and other items.
▶️ Sharper edges must be allowed on bunkering and tees and roads. As an example, bunkering edges need to be sharp and allow for shapes that have sharp and steep turns
▶️ Copy and paste that moves items at their level relative to the ground. As an example, a tree that has been sunken in one spot should sink in another at the same depth
▶️ Foresting must be scalable
▶️ Dimensions to be shown on and off. An example of this would be labeled dimensions for the width of a fairway or the length and width from a pin sheet on a green. This would also allow the designer to see the pin positions chosen based on a pin sheet
▶️ Up to 10 pin positions per green and ability to mix tees in a tournament setup
▶️ Lighting that is either stagnant for the entire round or progresses steadily for four hours during a play through. For example if your player tees off at 12, the lighting will progress to 4 pm during the round. This would also be the same with weather. Many times you could tee off at 12 with sunny weather and finish with clouds at 4. This also includes changing wind conditions
▶️ Different times of the year allow for sun angles and lengths of days
▶️ Green speeds chosen based upon an actual stimp meter that goes from 7-15 for example. You would chose these before you play and the designer would give their suggestion in advance
▶️ When testing a course, allow the player to hit multiple shots from positions to document where shots land and stay or how far they go
▶️ Splinable fences, water and walls
The Rest
▶️ Custom sized plots. Some larger and some smaller and the ability to choose custom backgrounds or interchangeable ones. This is also something that can be shared within the community
▶️ Golf course stats that are readily available. This would include avg. fairway width, bunker and green sq. Footage and counts of items on the golf course
▶️ Customizable scorecards that can be built by the player. This would also include the ability to name a hole on a course to be shown on the scorecard or during the holes preview
▶️ Functional driving ranges or practice areas that can be designed and shared and also apart of a publish. For example, if a player creates a range at a course they create, the user can choose to use that practice range before a round
