2021 TCGT CC Design Contest - Info and Discussion Thread

Timelines and requirements:

This contest is designed with Challenge Circuit level courses in mind, and will be judged with that in mind. There isn't an exact difficulty you need to aim at, but easier is generally better. 7,800 yard US Open courses are probably going to lose some points in judging. When submitting, please let us know which tee set you would like to use for judging. The contest tees do not have to be the back tees. Additionally, we will be doing required elements again this year. The designer should select 4 of the lsited elements to include in their course. Including more than 4 is absolutely allowed, however we will only be judging 4, so pick the the 4 you think highlights your course the best when submitting your entry. Once you are signed up, you are allowed to start your course. Submission window is open as of 7/16. Deadline is 8/31.

Required Elements:

At least one driveable par 4
At least one par 3 greater than 230 yards

At least one par 3 shorter than 125 yards

At least two holes with zero bunkers

A shared green (2 holes using the same green site)

A double green (A hole having two different green sites)

At least one blind tee shot
Four green sites each within 200 yards of each other. Measure from inside edge of each green (i.e. closest point to the others).
At least three par 4s under 400 yards
At least one three shot par 5
At least one template hole of your choice (please specify template used and provide a real world example!)
At least five par 5 holes
At least five par 3 holes
Total course yardage no greater than 6900
Either hole one or hole eighteen to be a par 3
Entire course to be contained in square/rectangular 1,000,000 yard area (e.g. 1000x1000, 800x1250 etc). Set a perimeter early.

Back to back par 3s or par 5s

At least two holes with a center-line hazard (tree, bunker, etc)

Augusta bunker challenge (no more than 22 bunkers on the course)

I dont think I'll start my CC course until I've finished my National Treasure course, but the addition of required elements is making me happy

Now all I have to do is pray for the next month that the lottery lets me into the main field...

Having judged, I think, four courses in last year’s CC contest that had one of the nines at 4000 yards or more, I can only echo the ‘please don’t build a US Open venue comment.

As a general idea, for a par 72, 7500 would be on the long side

Seeing as I like to torture myself and suchlike I opened the designer to just randomize a plot. 

I tried to select a different theme but I each time I mistakenly selected Highlands. I went on to randomize the best plot I've ever made.

I then tried to roughly sketch up two holes to get a feel for the place. They were freaking awesome. 

I'll guess it's Links again and I blame you lot for not stopping me.

mattf27 are the criterias locked in if I choose them now or can I go back and change them before submitting?

Do you mean the required elements? You don't have to settle on any of them now, just let us know when you're submitting your course at the end which 4 elements you want judged. You can use more if you desire, but we will only be judging 4.

I just signed up but have a question. Seeing as how many people signed up last year and you are thinking of having about 50 entrants, with everyone in pools based on experience and then a lottery to decide who is in. Does this mean pool 1 is drawn first and then anyone who was not drawn then gets added to lottery of pool 2 and so forth down the line, or do they just miss out. E.g. 20 designers allocated to pool 1 with only 10 positions, remaining 10 get added to the 25 people in pool 2 with 15 positions available., The 20 missing bout on pool 2 get added to lottery for pool 3.

Or is those initial 10 top designers who miss out on poll 1 miss out on entering competition.

1) Will we have a set weather to design to?
2) What constitutes a driveable par-4? Does it have to be reachable with all clubs and weather conditions?

You can give us preferred settings if you want, but designing for weather is not required. As for "what is a drivable 4?" just use your best judgement. If driving it is a potential option under average conditions, thats good enough for me.
