Event 43 - first PLAY-OFF match report
YORKYBROM (Les) v RMBLSB (Ray) – Round 1 featured match at Wolf Creek
Ray received four strokes for this pairing, on the 3rd, 8th, 11th and 16th holes.
After two holes it appeared he was going to need them because he three-putted on both to quickly find himself 2 Down. On the par 3 third he fought back well, carding a birdie without his received stroke to reduce the deficit to 1 Down. However, birdies from Les on the next two holes increased his lead to 3 Up, and he was looking in control of the match. The players exchanged birdies on the next two holes, but on the par 3 8th Les only managed a par while Ray had a simple birdie putt… which he missed. However, he sank the par putt coming back for a net bird and now it was only 2 Up to Les. The ninth was halved so at halfway Les had what seemed to be a comfortable two-shot advantage.
Honours were shared on the tenth but, while both players made par on the short 11th hole, Ray’s net birdie pulled Les back to only 1 Up. No change after another couple of pars on the 12th, but on the 13th Ray’s huge drive caught the path and found the green! Les struggled to get a par but it was in vain as Ray holed his putt for an incredible eagle – and the match was now All Square!
At this point Ray was looking stronger and stronger and he definitely had all the momentum, while Les’s early confidence looked to be ebbing away.
On the 14th Les pulled his drive into sand and a bogey followed, while Ray’s par gave him the lead in the match for the first time. The tricky downhill par 3 15th was halved, although if Ray’s chip had dropped instead of lipping out he would have had one foot in the next round. Both players birdied the 16th – but Ray’s net eagle meant he was now 2 Up with two to play!!
On the par 5 17th Ray obviously thought he could get across the water with his drive – but he didn’t and he also found the wet stuff with his third, effectively handing the hole to a disbelieving Les, who now had some hope. On #18 Les’s safe drive found the fairway, but Ray had another moment of misjudgement and, trying to take the short route to the green, only found more water! A bogey followed while Les managed a par, making the match All Square.
Back to the first hole and Sudden Death! Sadly for Ray, he could only bogey the hole while Les triumphantly knocked in his par putt to progress to the next round!!
What a match!! Well done to both players, and it’s a shame there has to be a loser, but hey, that’s matchplay!!
