It's not though. The prologue of the series opens with the Others, same as the opening scene of the show. The epilogue/final battle should tie back to that. The point of the series is that the politics and scheming and wars and who sits the throne isn't going to matter once the Long Night comes. The characters and plotline of the show have become parodies of themselves since it passed the books and there was no more source material to pull from.
Ah, gotcha, I see your point.
Martin's original vision of the books was, the prologue, 5 books, and an epilogue, which was set after the long night was over.
This has turned into 7 books, and a whole 8th book (Dream of Spring) which was the original epilogue.
This is what I've been referring to earlier in this thread. I'm wondering how they are going to treat that in the show, if they are going to pull a Gotham and make the last one "10 years later" or something. Because the Long Night (Winter) is supposed to last years.
I 100% agree with your last statement there.
Yeah the Long Night was a winter that lasted multiple generations. We got one night in the show lol. I don't know, I really just want Martin to finish the damn books. I just have no confidence that the ending the show is going to give us will be very satisfying at all to long time book readers lol.

It used to be - trust the wrong person - get your head chopped off. Renege on your marriage proposal and marry someone different - get your family slaughtered at your wedding party. Yep, the days when GRRM's words held true, that you can never feel safe about your favourite characters, now you just think "well I wonder how they're gonna escape this pickle"... The Wight-hunt plot last season was the worst example this. One of the stupidest ideas imaginable, with all kinds of unlikely shenanigans taking place to make it happen, and they got bailed out last second, exactly as we knew they would. And best of all, that absurd storyline was necessary for the NK to acquire a dragon to break down the wall and come down south. You almost get the impression that the NK planned it, but how? He warged into Tyrion to give him the idea?? Who knows. My best guess is that GRRM just told D&D that the NK acquires a dragon, it's up to them to come up with a plotline to get there. Anyway, don't want to moan too much as I enjoyed most of that last episode, but in a popcorn kind of way. If Season 1 had been like this though I doubt I would have continued into Season 2, it was the originality, unpredictability, deep character development and phenomenal dialogue that got me hooked, not battles or dragons or magic or tits.

Yeah, I mean, I still tune in every week to watch, and the dragon spitting the blue flames was awesome, as were the dragons fighting in the air, etc. It's just a very different type of entertainment now than it used to be and to how the books are. I actually enjoyed last week's episode more than this week's I think, lots of conversations that needed to happen finally did and were done well, and at the end I was amped and ready for this upcoming battle.

- Jon didn't learn anything from his battle with Ramsay. He charged in like an idiot and was bailed out AGAIN out of nowhere at the last second and didn't have to face any consequence for his stupidity. It's been a recurring thing for the past 2-3 seasons once the show passed the books. It used to be - trust the wrong person - get your head chopped off. Renege on your marriage proposal and marry someone different - get your family slaughtered at your wedding party. Stuff like that doesn't happen anymore because the writers are too worried about fan service.
I told my wife that same thing, last night, as it was happening!!!!
When Jon went charging in, I said out loud, "what an idiot, hasn't he learned anything?" And she nodded emphatically.
Remember when Littlefinger told Ned, 'I did tell you not to trust me, you know...'
Now the only thing we CAN trust is that the show people are afraid to do what made the books so successful in the first place. Kill your darling.

Remaining episodes might play out like a soap opera now.
How the heck did not many more die. The odds were totally against all living things, yet the 19 who hold the show together didn't lose anybody that truly mattered.

I still say Danny might off Jon just to keep the throne for herself. ORRRR
Jon gets the throne, burns it all and storms out to go to the north. Fair and free elections for next the next thing and one line from many seasons back comes true. Varys always wanted to become king.

1) Ghost pretty much goes on his own sometimes. Didn't he range on his own a lot north of the wall?
and
b) None of them? LOL

That scene where all the swords went out though, that was brilliant.
It really gave you the feeling of the helplessness, of the sheer futility of fighting this enemy, as the characters sat there watching and had their oh crap moment.
And from a real life filming standpoint, it solved the problems of having to choreograph fight scenes with all those flaming swords.
If I remember though, didn't it show them retreating, coming running back like scared little girls? or am I thinking of the second wave, the unsullied?
And how many times did they show that scene where people were retreating through the unsullied ranks, and then the ranks would close behind them? I swear I saw that same scene at least three times!

Yeah fight scenes did seem repetitive.
The whole 1/1/2 hours were TOO dark also.
Would love to be a fly on the wall when Cersei finds out the NK is dead and at the hands of a girl and the winning team is headed south.... I know we will see some scene or other but still, if I am being totally drawn in...

Glad others thought this as well, I watched it on my phone on my way to work on Monday and was squinting almost the entire time, just assumed it was my phone or the light on the train or something. But in fact there have been quite a few memes about it:

Oh yeah, I was watching it on a 50" tv in a dark media room. And half the time it was too dark and the other half was a whiteout snowy/cloudy blizzard.
As for Cersei, her reaction will be something like-
Oh. they won? The night king's army must have not been that bad at all then. I told you it wasn't a threat like they made it out to be. They just wanted to get me up there so they could attack me. They won't be a problem. I have the gold company and Euron.
