The 5th hole at Yale is a masterful 'short'. How tasty would a back left pin be?

So, this is in fact real and possibly the worst thing I've ever seen on a golf course...

So, this is in fact real and possibly the worst thing I've ever seen on a golf course... Hey, man. If it's cart path only I don't want to have to walk all the way across the fairway to get to my ball. I get to walk way less this way .

Risk reward mechanic executed perfectly.

What a strange decision. Edit: joegolferg - is there anywhere particularly good to get summaries of all the template holes in the poll? I've played a few of the template courses and have done some reading around, but the best of them (Fried Egg) only has about 8 on there. I'm tempted to use quite a few in my next design, if I can find a bit more info on say: Leven, Maiden etc.

To be honest there aren't many places to find in depth analysis on some of the templates other than Bahto's book on CB Macdonald "The Evangelist of Golf" which costs around £800-1000... The Maiden template comes from the 6th hole at Royal St George's, a par three. The hole originally played as a blind tee shot to a green that is shaped like a sideways Biarritz. The use of the template in general is quite rare, considering all the known Raynor courses out there (many are still unknown) There's a pretty solid rendition of it at the Dedham Polo & Country Club, a Raynor/Ross design. The Leven is a very common template that is almost used on a Macdonald, Raynor and Banks course. There's an extensive article on this template right here... geekedongolf.com/tag/leven/

Thanks for the link (and yes, I won't be buying a book...) As it would happen, Fried Egg posted a YouTube video on the Leven just last month:
I've actually played Royal St George's and have a couple of days playing there later this month, so will grab some photos for you! It's still a semi blind tee shot, with the green sort of a biarritz at an angle.
You'll be pleased to know my next course will be taking huge inspiration from templates (although not the geometric style). Figure it's a little out of my comfort zone and should teach me lots about angles and green contouring.

Good on you getting to play there, I'm jealous... Here's a flyover of Dedham I forgot to post. It has the maiden template.

Really good video, thanks - I liked the look of the plateau hole in particular and I can see how I could use the maiden in a couple of different ways. Sadly with St George's, it'll be a couple of rounds of foursomes, but I may get courtesy of the course on the second afternoon, so fingers crossed! Should be a lovely couple of days. May pick your brain with a couple of sketches of holes later on...

Here's a (rather low resolution) look at New Albany Country Club's East Course's 6th hole. I’m playing here Thursday if the weather holds up, though I’ve played here before and I can say it’s one of my favorite Cape holes. From the Nicklaus (back) tees, it’s listed at 365 yards, though I’m not sure that’s accurate because a straight line tee to green is only 320 yards. Keeping in mind it’s quite a bit downhill, this could be a very fun drivable hole for Tour pros. This course hosted the LPGA's New Albany Golf Classic for three years (1999-2001), the first year won by Annika Sorrenstam. Anyway, I’m getting a bit sidetracked. I like how it puts a modern touch on a classic template hole. This specifically reminds me of the 5th at Mid Ocean Club. The front right bunker here is a bigger hazard than it may appear... even with lots of green to work with, you’re leaving yourself work for par if your tee shot ends up there. Just thought I’d share as I get ready to play one of my favorite Central Ohio courses!

I'm closely examining how people sketch their holes in hope of being able to sketch my own in more detail.

I always prefer them to be shorter holes when they play across water because it tempts players to cut off more of the hazard in an attempt to have a short pitch in. Great to play in real and in game. My cape hole at Raynor Ridge is very, very similar to this one.

Whilst on the subject of Cape holes, I thought I'd throw up a picture of one of my absolute favorites - the 2nd hole at Yale. You don't always need water on a Cape to make it punishing. The greenside bunkers here are rumored to be between 25-30ft deep!

My home course, Blowing Rock CC, was thought to be a Donakd Ross until we discovered its actulaay a Raynor design. The back tees are only 6200 yds but for a golfer like me who doesn’t crush th ball, it’s a joy ro play. It’s a Raynor masterpiece in my opinion.
