Not been on the forums for a long time and stumbled onto this little gold mine . Loving the architecture discussions. As a non classically trained golf course designer , I don't think I know many of the proper terms for these templates so found a lot of this interesting to read. I'm very early on in the thread catching up... I think I'll be a while before I get through it all. Great stuff though. Always enjoy talking hole strategy. Not sure what my absolute favorite hole template (as I said I don't know all the terms yet). But the pinnacle for me is a hole where the best choices are very different depending on tee and hole position, weather and player strengths. It is always an aim of the holes I build, a well designed green can really change where you want to be depending on the pin. I know Lido kinda fits this in many ways, but I don't think I've ever played one in real life. I much prefer links style courses/holes, where you have to negotiate undulations and small but deadly bunkers Glad the thread is of interest to you and there's certainly plenty of material and comments in here that you can learn from, and just about templates. If you prefer links style courses you should take a look at Lido GC, Fishers Island, The Creek Club (Locust Valley) and NGLA - all templates courses but with that links terrain you prefer. I also compiled a list of all recognised template holes and added a small description of the characteristics of each one. Here's the link... blog.tgctours.com/template-hole-architecture/

Almost all triggered a memory of interesting holes I've seen or played in real life. I find them a very interesting concept, I suspect that you would struggle to create a hole that didn't fit at least one of these, and it's probably hard to argue that if you try to put as many different templates into a course as possible you would have an interesting and varied layout. However from a creative point of view I'd be hesitant to take the definitions too rigidly, allowing the templates to inspire rather than dictate, if that makes sense? I literally just bought the game having not touched it since early TGC2. I will check those out

I literally just bought the game having not touched it since early TGC2. I will check those out It sort of makes sense to allow templates to be an inspiration, they definitely are in all my designs. They can be used in all aesthetic styles and can laid out over all sorts of different topography. By taking the definitions too rigidly I can only assume that you mean building them in the aesthetic style of the real life architects who pioneered them? If you mean just building holes inspired by the characteristics then that is, in effect, a template hole. Macdonald made it clear that there are only truly a certain amount of original golf holes (his list of templates) and everything else is a variation of the templates. This is the greatest piece of architecture philosophy ever written, in my opinion. When you think long and hard about it it's hard to argue against his thought.

Looks awesome and super fun. So glad Sea Island got this kinda treatment to, as it deserved better.

Mad to think how much dirt they were able to shift in the 1910's...

Phenomenal stuff. You can sense that the owners have just given Hanse right to do whatever the F he wants, with that land. As a result they're going to receive a world class golf course. Bunkering is top tier.
