Always been a "index on top of stick, thumb on bottom of stick" guy in all games since I was a young kid. That's exactly how i do it on my PC (use PS4 controller on there too) I feel that the stick is way too loose if i try any other way. Push down slightly on the stick (as if pressing L3 or R3 depending on stick you use) and it can keep it firm, a haphazard quick flick and it'll go God knows where.

I go back slowly then a bit quicker afterwards normally. Don't seem to have a problem doing it. I probably get away with it because i experience no lag what so ever.

Thought I'd give this a try (I'll try anything once). I applied the merest downward pressure to the stick and it wouldn't move, then drew the club back and got stuck halfway back..... hmmmm Tried once more and my golfer got stuck at the top of the backswing. Gave that up in a hurry....haha Going to continue with fighting the stick, missing the target left and right. lol

I hold the controller just as I do any other game. It's not always straight, but good enough. When I start to go off target or generally play bad I lean forward on the couch. The most important feature in my swing technique is the lean. Backwards for speedgolf, forward for precision and left or right if I miss the cone or use draw and fade.
Edit: Obviously the controller wave left, right, up or down near the cup

Most of the time I hold a cigarette in my left hand too. Between index and middle finger.

I use my left thumb. After the shot, I try to "steer" the ball to where I want it to go (even lean to the right or left), though this does not seem to help. When landing on the green, I pull back to "brake" and yell "stop stop" at the tv ( this doesn't work also).

I'm right handed but use my left thumb for this game. Funnily I started out looking at the controller but I found I lost all my feel and sense of the game when I did that. Now I look at the screen, find out within the first few swings weather I'm going to hook or slice for the day, and then aim accordingly

Even though I rather wouldn't, I have begun looking at the controller on the backswing. I then look at the screen for my through swing (after my pause). It's making a big improvement.

If you really wanna hit it straight, look & concentrate on the controller, not the screen. I'm just about to learn this too. It feels a bit strange in the beginning when you stop looking at your character. But you get used to that, and your shots should become straighter. Having had this game 3 weeks now I started the same, until I took this method and decided nearly all the time on swinging while I`m looking at the controller and not the screen, I hit straight.

Have done this for 3 rounds now. Huge improvement. I've seen what looks like 2 or 3 perfectly straight shots, and the crooked ones are much less off centre. I'll probably be banned now haha.

Right handed and use the right stick to swing. I use both thumbs (weird I know). Usually start at 5 and 7 o'clock , if struggling with straight shots, move thumbs up to about 3 and 9 o'clock. I look at screen only, never tried looking at controller. Slight downward pressure on right stick with a very pronounced "flick" for 100% power. Odd setup but with practice it works for me......not well.....but it works and I have a blast playing this great game.
