If this turns into a continued debate on the chipping on the greens policy, we're going to lock this thread too. That discussion has been completed. It's time for everyone to move on now, please. Is Doyley going to post the final decision on this tonight? I thought that was what I read. As it stands now there are parts of the rule that is confuzzling

I have no problem with a ban on flopping, chipping, punching on the green and usually do fine at lag putts but when the green grid does not extend for over half the putt then that is an issue. I am missing important information on the read of the putt. The rule is to prevent abuse, which is fine, but scenarios like this get me frustrated. If we are going to be missing the grid on a lot of long putts then all tournaments shouldn't use it.

For those that say flopping in general ( off the greens) should be banned due to how easy it is let me say this:
Do I agree it's too easy? Yes
But, then again so is everything else in this game when compared to real life.
I flop in real life, two of my best golf shots were from a flop. I flop from the rough, the bunker, the fairway (worst at it from fairway) so it's not unrealistic to flop from the places you have described, but you know where it is indeed unrealistic to flop from, you guessed it, starts with g and end with n.
This is video golf, everything is easier here, that is how it should be.

I think that the flop shot is a realistic shot, but it is an incredibly difficult shot to master. Executing it in the sand is a little easier since the sand gives and you slide the club under the ball much easier. The problem here is I've seen the ball then spin backwards 10 feet which IS unrealistic. Same with using it out of the rough.
Personally i think the flop shot is far far far far too easy a shot and is completely unrealistic in game compared to RL. I've seen pros who do practice it misjudge and blade the ball or shank it which are the two most common types of misses with that shot, but in this game that doesn't happen.. ever unless you don't swing straight.
That being said it is as unrealistic as greens like Kodiak which doesn't hold hardly any type of shot when physics say it should.

HB have said they will be looking at making the flop shot harder, just give it time.

I agree with you on that, but I have also had the ball spin back from a fully lofted pitch shots from rough from the edge of the green. It is also way too easy to fly a pitch shot from short distances and get super control from bad lies around the green

I think the game really penalises you for being in the heavy rough just off the fairway but not around green. You can still have a 95% shot in the heavy rough close to the green

You know what else is rather easy, ball, deep, in a green side bunker. Too easy to get close and too easy to stop.

You certainly don't get backspin out of heavy rough

But aiming for a bunker shouldn't be a better play than being on the putting surface Who said you need to aim for a bunker? My suggestion is practice the putting. Or learn to layup.. irl I would rather have an 80 foot putt on the green than buried in the rough half that distance away because it is in my control. You never know how good a contact you are going to make when your ball is sitting down in the rough Most pros would always take a good lie in the bunker than being in the rough around the green because they are very good at bunker play

I understand the complaint, but here is my take In real life a 75 foot putt is a very realistic 3-putt probability. It should be here too. 2 putting from 75 feet should feel like a birdie. 1 putting should feel like an eagle. It should be tough. Just my opinion.

My €0.02
In real golf... Aiming for a green side bunker is something I am not afraid to do when faced with long approach to a tricked out green. The green side bunker shot is a simple one to hit, easier than a flop or pitch from heavy rough. Even out of deep bunkers a nicely splashed ball will spin quite a bit. However a lag putt is not something I am afraid of, drop me 100ft from the hole, €5 says I get it down in 2. I almost always avoid hitting a flop shot from a tight lie, usually opting to hit a little skip and check type shot instead.
My personal issue with the putting in the game is I just can develop the same sense of feel on the long putts, and before the golden chosen few start toting my apparent suck factor, it's just something I struggle with in the game, and not for lack of practice. I have practised, and practised some more, but the results I get are inconsistent at best. I am a fairly decent putter within 30 feet, but outside of that I struggle.
A flop shot is a bold shot to hit in the real world, and one that you wouldn't choose to play very often(at least I don't). I like to use the green and roll the ball to the hole rather than lofting it all the way to the flag. In TGC the ball just doesn't react the way I would expect it to on the green. To me it feels like the ball flights pretty accurately to how it does in real life, but once it lands it seems like it weighs 5 pounds, thus forcing me to use the wildly spinning flop shot.
If HB were to penalize players hitting out of rough from around the green, and force players to hit the green, I think we would see scores normalize somewhat. There is quite a bit of guessing involved when you hit a flop shot in real life, especially when hitting out of heavy grass. I am not sure about everyone else, but I have not found any difference in shots hit from uphill, downhill, or flat lies. HB needs to take this into consideration as this greatly affects how the ball reacts on the green, and subsequently, how one would play the shot.
HB also needs to redo how a ball entering a bunker reacts. A full shot that flies directly into a bunker rarely plugs, rather it will bounce and tend to lay flat on top of the sand. This obviously depends on the trajectory of the shot hit and its angle of descent. The steeper the angle of descent, the greater the chance of a fried egg lie. A ball that bouncing once or twice before landing in the bunker will tend to sit down in the sand, and a ball rolling into the bunker, will almost always sit on top.
In summary, I have found myself playing the ball short of the green, and hitting a flop shot from the fairway, but not afraid of ending up in the heaviest of rough.
