The new up-and-coming golf course architect that brought you Overfield C.C. in March has recently purchased land outside of Scottsdale, Arizona to begin his next big project. Here's a sneak peak at the opening hole! 1st Fairway

More progress was made tonight by finishing the sculpting and shaping of hole 2 (keep in mind, there are no plantings or objects on any hole yet, as I've decided to design the whole course from a layout perspective and then go back and beautify it). 2nd Fairway

Nice, Eric! I'm always so blown away by you people who are able to design such beautiful courses; I'm the type who can't even draw a straight line in Microsoft Paint, so that makes it even more awesomer!!

The third hole was routed tonight, a short par 3 (only stretches to 135 to a back pin) but highly protected by bunkers and a green that you need to be a bit careful on. 3rd Green

Thank you for the nice comments, but I'm just a novice. I totally agree with you when I play these amazing courses made by a lot of these guys on here. My goal is to someday design a layout worthy of a TGC Tours event!

Thanks Rob, I spent four hours on this hole, and it's only a par 3! LOL. But it is one of my favorites that I've built so far. Based on multi-tee and multi-pin locations, this hole will be able to play between 103-134 yards, so I'm pretty excited about this par 3. I'm a firm believer that distance isn't the only thing that can make a par 3 a great hole.

All (4) of my courses have been accepted into the database, but admittedly, they're not up to snuff for a tour stop. I'm working on a links course that might have a shot. I get a lot of inspiration from guys like you who are doing some great things.

I thought you guys might find this neat (hopefully). It's a peak into my design process, although I wish I had taken a picture before I laid any surfaces down so that you could see the original terrain that I sculpted the hole into. The anatomy of the design process, with techniques borrowed from scampi00: Laying out landing spots from the tee as I plan where the fairway starts (bunker positions were already strategically chosen prior to this picture) Planning the green complex and thinking through how a player will approach it on this par 5 (I'm using 20-30 yards as a diameter for this course's average green size) Now filling in the fairway surfaces as I want them to shape around the bunkers and how I want the final contours to bend along the hole The final surfaces are laid down and I'll then remove the distance points and begin sculpting the terrain I hope that was helpful to new designers (like me), because as I've learned the GNCD software and become better at it I think these are important techniques to see when designing holes that are consistent within your entire course's layout. Your fairway widths, green sizes, bunker shapes, and rough should be similar all the way around in order to give your course a professional feel. Put yourself in the shoes of not only the course architect, but the Head Superintendent. Imagine you were responsible for mowing the fairways, raking the bunkers, and placing the hole locations on the greens. Thinking like that will help you avoid goofy shapes and slopes. Think to yourself, "if I had to try to get a mower around this, could I do it?", or "if I was playing this course in real life and the pin location was 'here', would I be pissed off about this?". These are all things to consider when designing your course. Thanks for following along in my designs, I hope to continue to help people with their courses and review other great designs as I go, because I've certainly benefited from some great people helping me.

And now the sculpting of the 4th hole is coming along, so compare to the pictures above for a good sense of the progress of that hole. 4th Tee (I see a crack in the bridge that needs to be fixed!) 4th Green

This looks a definite improvement on your first course Eric, and for a debut that one was excellent.
I particularly like the way you work the bunkers into the fairways, its a technique i havent used much of yet but am starting to learn it.
Which do you lay down first, bunker or fairway?
Look forward to a round at Forgedale when it opens!
