A 65 to start. Finishing birdie - eagle helped. Holed some nice putts and hit the pin on 8.

I joined up and played a round-
first question- how do you figure out the breaks in the green?
I read somewhere that it was allowed to go into the camera that you get when you hit the button that makes it look at it from the ground... then if I hit the down arrow it went even further to the ground... But all three views.... I could not see any breaks. the greens looked all flat to me, I couldn't see any angles, or slopes, until I putted the ball and watched what it did. I love to play this way, and did pretty good with my drives and approaches, and actually did better at chipping, without a gauge or loft box to worry about. But.. putting, I lost so many putts, just because I couldn't tell in any way shape or form, how the green was breaking and sloping. When I did try to guess, I guessed wrong almost every time.
Any advice on that? As said, I saw the camera views, and with them I still couldn't see anything but flat surfaces.

I think this is exactly what I said when I first tried no grids! It's very tough mate, but with practice it gets a lot easier. You can't tell much from the putting line itself, you need to look for clues elsewhere. Using the camera to go around, look out for any hill lines (e.g. fringe) and compare them to the top or bottom lines of your monitor which can be considered a baseline for flatness. If the only thing you can find is a hill to the right of the hole, even if you only see it when it's 30ft away, most likely it will still cause a right to left break - it might not, but it's the only clue you have so you need to trust in it and go for it. You can also get a clue, at least for any break where you're currently putting from, from the angle of the putter's feet. Here are some example screenshots I've just taken from Pebble Beach, drawing arrows on clue areas to eyeball comparisons with the top/bottom of the monitor: Eventually it'll be a lot more straightforward, I went from initially thinking "this is bull**** how can anybody read these greens!" when I first started, and now I can guess the correct break direction 80% of the time within 10 seconds. That said the extent of break is still extremely hard to assess for me (but it should be to be fair, putting requires educated guesses based on clues). mcbogga's twitch video above of his R1 at Pebble Beach is a great example of a no grids veteran at work, in particular I noticed he was far braver than me in aiming for very wide breaks to sink some crazy putts. Generally, every time you make an assessment for a putt, make a mental note about the clues you used, combined with how right / wrong you were. This evaluation and feedback needs to be done constantly to build up your knowledge, and even if you start with the wrongest assumptions imaginable, by constantly adjusting based on that feedback you will improve. It's not an exact science but you can massively reduce your errors with thoughtful practice.

Yes, and Pebble - just like in real life - is tricky on the greens with a lot of break. The above was a really good round with the flat stick for me. Some rounds nothing at all drops.
As said, it is a number of factors that come together when reading a putt. Overall lay of the land, view from behind the hole, swinging the camera a bit side to side, up and down. The information is there. But even with years of no grid play misreads are common.
Speed is key as well, both in order to make putts and more importantly to avoid 3-jacks. 7-10 footers with some movement for par are not easy.

thank you that helps! and helps a lot knowing that it is that hard, and not just me!

thank you that helps! and helps a lot knowing that it is that hard, and not just me! If you start missing putts on the high side you're on the right track 😉.Putting does get easier but remember some of us here have been putting no grids since the RGT days with TGC1. I Need to sort my long game out as putting is the strongest part of my game at the moment.

Much better stuff from me in round 1 this week, putted really well but also the long game was better though only 61% GIR (need to work on that).100% short,100% medium and 23% long putts really helped. 6 birdies and 3 bogies for a 69 , some great putts for birdies and 3 long par save putts. Why I prefer to putt than chip when on the fringe or just off the green

Started round 2 OK, -3 after 8. Then hooked the drive on 9, tried to hit a 4I into the green but pushed it down onto the beach and got stuck literary between a rock and a hard place. Carded an 8 on that hole.... Then on the back nine I think HB started tuning the ball flight because the clubs started showing different distances and flying really weird after hole 12. So couldn't really play out the round properly.

So couldn't really play out the round properly. Wow, talk about bad timing lol... On the plus side the changes they've made are fantastic, most notably much more realistic full shot wedge spin, and a massively reduced lofting range. So no stupid lofting is possible now, which also means I have to use a gap wedge as I just can't cover 115-123 yards now via the magical loft box...

Are you playing a different game? Just went to my test course and tried the clubs out, they are completely broken now... The 3W is hitting the wierd TGC2 floating balloon trajectory, the wedges dont spin much more than before and the distances are just wierd. a 64yds LW?

Flights are higher which I wasn't keen on but it's no biggie. Loft changes are absolutely brilliant for the game, and the spin I've had has looked fantastic on greens for full shots.

The loft changes are so good in fact that I think they may have made ultra sim defunct lol, the distance differences available through the loft box have been massively reduced, even a max loft isn't that much and the swing plane penalty is so severe that it makes it pointless. Now 85/90/95% swings are going to be needed for normal play. So we've had ourselves a head start over the pack
