And a question: How do you deal with the severe sidehill lies on approach shots? I try to convert the sidehill slope to roughly X mph of wind and add/subtract that to the wind... but the sidehills seem to affect different clubs in different ways and not liek they would IRL. That's an excellent question. I wish I had an answer better than "I can eyeball it to a reasonable degree of success." Practice is the key, I would say. After a while, you just start to build up a bank of memories that you can apply to future rounds. Some people switch to a putter and do some fancy camera work to get a good view of the stance. I know edi_vedder is one such player; maybe he'd be willing to comment on his technique. Correct... I'm one of those players that occasionally uses the blade of his putter to judge sidehill lies. It's a method I've learned when watching Sloaner's streams on Twitch (former #1 on TGCT; not playing anymore). You basically switch to your putter and then bring the marker very close to you (about 5ft or so). The you press O (on PS4), and the view goes to the ground level. Then you can often see how severe (or not) the sidehill lie is. That being said I have to add that while I'm using this technique from time to time, judging sidehill lies is more about feel to me. The reason why I often measure it quiet okay is probably the hundreds of rounds I've played in this game. Learning by doing... or something like that.

I find that I do need to add distance when playing a short iron with a crosswind. As the irons get longer, the amount of this adjustment needs to be smaller.
I almost always draw/fade to counteract crosswinds, and find that the distance adjustment I need to make is approximately half the wind speed.
For example, for a 110 yard approach with a 10 MPH crosswind, I need to set my distance to 115 yards (10/2 + 110).
The one drawback is that I find this often causes inconsistent trajectory from side hill lies - when playing a slight draw where the ball is below my feet, for example, sometimes the shot takes off to the left of where I was expecting.

I guess it makes sense that shaping the ball into the wind would kill the distance a bit. Thanks for the tip, Patrick. I imagine people who like working the ball will find that quite useful.

This is one thing I was pretty good at at the end of last season while on Web and at the beginning of my PGA career. I got away from it slowly during season two, and have started to work it back into my game the last month or so. Its a work in progress to get it back, but if someone has a system that works for them, I would encourage shaping the ball back into crosswinds to kill distance/rollout, especially on firm greens. I find using killing half the wind with shaping and moving the aiming marker the other half has worked well for me in the past. Trying to find that "sweet spot" again consistently is one of the things I am working on.

Thanks for all your tips and hints Griff. I know personally following yours and Doyleys tips and calculations has helped me so much and improved my game quickly. It's much appreciated the time taken to jump onto people's streams (mine included) and give a few tips out as well as your post and videos here.
The theory and calculations behind the yardage and winds is a fantastic help but I still believe practice and feel have a huge part to play. Playing different courses, wind conditions, green firmness's and green speeds all help in the long term. That's certainly helped me anyway but I'm only in CC-A so I'm sure you pro's will be able to say if that rings true or not.
Anyway was just a quick message to say thanks for taking the time for all this.

Is there any other aspect of the game people would like me to tackle in a stream? Not sure when I'd be able to get around to it, but I'm curious for any ideas that you guys might have. Thanks in advance.

Is there any other aspect of the game people would like me to tackle in a stream? "How to beat Sweeney without cheating/breaking the rules?"

I have a topic for you D O... How about those tweener flop/pitch/chip shots from 14-20 yards or so, especially up a hill (meaning the chip wont work) or down a hill (how to get it to stop).
I know the up-hillers from off the green that are about 16 yards up a big hill, I use a 45yd or 55yd pitch partial swing. I usually loft the club enough to make the yardage with full hit twice the distance I want the ball to travel. Then try to hit about a 65% shot. Which of the two clubs I use depends on the slope of the green (away or toward me). Don't know if this is how the great ones do it, but it works good most of the time for me. Unless of course my nerves are up, then I either over or under hit... But I see so many folks throwing up a partial flop in these conditions and the ball comes flying back to their feet...
Another one would be sand play. I fashion myself pretty good at this. Especially the tough 11yd ones up a big hill to get out.
Or plays from less than 100 yards to green in deep rough...
Maybe this means a scrambler's delight stream? Just a thought...

Id be interested in the above posters questions about those less then 100 yd shots. Mostly 11-25. And also the effect of the wind on the 50-60-70-80-90-100 yd shots. It seems my wind calculations are always off from under 100.

Lou, I don't keep track of the specific rollout distances, so I'm probably not the best guy to ask. I already did a firm green special, which is where you can find basically everything I have to say in terms of firm greens. The link to that is in the original post on the first page. I believe there's another thread in the Driving Range that may be of use, as well. Hope this helps. mde8965 and csabo17, I think a scrambling/short-game stream is an excellent idea. I'd probably need to create a practice area in the GNCD first, but this kind of stream is likely to help out a lot of people.
