Back in A again this week, the last time it did not go so well and was no where near earning my card. Will the wind this week bring my attempt to a crashing halt or maybe the wind will carry me to glory, time to find out with round one. A positive start when I landed my approach within six feet of the hole, a straightforward putt to go one under. My putting has been mixed lately, while the rest of my game has improved my putting still causes problems so a easy putt was a nice way to start. The second played out pretty much the same as the first, two under after two. I had a chance to go three under on the third with a eight foot putt but made a mess of it, it was a good chance missed. I missed my first green on the fourth, I left it short, a mistake yes but not a costly one, with a strong crosswind, the hole was playing difficult, happy with par. I dropped my first shot on the fifth, another hole playing difficult because of the wind but I can't blame the conditions, it was simply down to a bad putt. I got that shot back on the next hole, again I failed to find the green but managed to chip in for birdie. Two pars followed, one a lucky escape with a good bunker shot, one a outside birdie chance with a long putt that just missed. I finished the front nine with another par, I got the hole wrong so was grateful to escape with out dropping a shot. A tricky front nine, my score I think a fair reflection on how I played.
The par streak continued on ten. My approach was not great and I left myself with a tricky birdie putt, it had the line until the very end when it veered right and stopped, it was a good effort with a disappointing result. So close to a ace on twelve, missed by a foot, it was a great tee shot and more than happy to break the par streak with a tap in birdie. I could not turn that into a birdie streak though, a wind misread meant I missed the green again to remain three under. I was just not getting close enough to the hole or in some cases the green to give myself many birdie chances. I did get close on fourteen, the result was a birdie and to go four under. I came so close to putting it in the water on sixteen, if the ball had bounced backwards I would have been in trouble. I rode my luck a little and when I chipped in for birdie, I knew I had gotten away with it. I over compensated for the wind on seventeen and was left with a horrible downhill putt, I went six feet past the cup but the par putt was uphill and straight. My approach on the last was as good as I could have hoped, a tap in birdie to finish six under par.
It was tough going at times out there, no doubt the wind having a major bearing on the round. I have read people saying the course is boring, I don't think it is, yes it's a bit straight forward but bring the wind into it and you have a tension filled round. I have always liked this course, I like the real course feel. It brought a exiting round for me today, my heart paused a beat on every approach as I waited to see if I got it right. I am happy with the way I played, I could have put the ball closer on occasion but overall I did not leave myself in danger to many times. Round two to come soon, another six under will be fine with me.
