If people treat chipping on the green the way PGA players treat it, then we're all good and there's nothing to worry about. I understand that Doyley but if that's what you guys want then as I stated before there is a rule if you're going to ask people to report chippers then there must be a rule against doing it in a way that PGA players don't no?
if you're not going to come out and declare that it is deemed illegal to chip on greens in situations where a PGA player wouldn't then asking people to report chippers is pointless.. as many of these people have said "there's no rule against it so how can you punish or expect everyone not to do it"
I guess what I'm saying is there needs to be a true official stance either chipping is only acceptable when a PGA player would do it or its legal whenever. This needs to be made perfectly clear before q-school and affect everyone not just top finishers or the integrity this tour was founded and based on is in serious trouble. If the person finishing in 144th chips on every putt over 15ft he/she stole a PGA card from someone in 151st and you can't in good conscience punish him/her because you stated there's no rule against it.
Saying your not going to make a rule against it until it becomes a problem is really poor practice, it's like not maintaining a dam until it springs a huge leak or not treating a disease until its life threatening... this killed any hope TW had of having competitive leagues like this one (they didn't have ghost balls) and if a stance isn't taken rather quickly I fear that this tour will suffer the same fate

What would happen on the PGA tour if a player determined they were so good with a wedge and poor with lag putting that they started doing this several times a round? That is the solution we need to find. What would the PGA do if this become a regular occurance? If it is nothing, then so be it. If it is a limit, or a change in the rule, so then so be it.. not setting policy with my questions above, but rather trying to determine the guidelines for making policy

Hi guys, let's make it official! There will be no rule against chipping on the greens. If it gets out of hand we'll revisit. This is not a green light to chip away - it is a green light to bring out the LW when you have an obstacle in the way or you're too far away for a full putt to make. Let's keep the spirit of the game intact and not chip when a putt would suffice. Please report any repetitve chippers to commish@tgctours.com and we'll deal with it on a case-by-case basis. If this was a no-grid tour it would be more of an issue but since the grids are on I don't see this being something we need to police. Read the second sentence in the quoted response. No rule against chipping on greens. That's the official stance.

I agree with that. I think it is what the PGA would do (especially if they did not have to defend it to the groundskeepers)

No rule against chipping on greens. That's the official stance. then right underneath that he states "... and not chip on the green when putting will suffice", "not a green light to chip away" (this one especially sounds like there is a rule against it or conditions for it) and "please report any repetitive chippers to TGC". That's where I'm confused if the stance is chipping on the green is legal whenever you feel like it (a.k.a. no rule), then why ask not to do it when putting will suffice, say its not a green light to do it and ask us to report chippers, that's what I was saying is confusing and contradictory. I'm honestly not trying to debate what the stance should be I'm just asking for a clear one or at least clarification for myself.

It sets out the framework for not making chipping on the greens a future issue necessitating a rule change and leading to individual scrutiny.

There is no rule against chipping on the green
If you see it happening report it so that tgctours can gauge whether a rule needs to come into place
It's as simple as that...
Why a rule would come in place is beyond me as it's legal to do it in real golf

Well, I've never chipped or pitched from the green in TGC, but I did pitch on the green in irl once and there were no obstructions (except about 65 feet of green). The green was enormous. The largest I've ever seen. No one blinked an eye at it. Of course I was very very careful not to take a divot. If it had been less than 50 feet I would never have considered it, but I consider more than 50 feet out of range of a putter. Sure it will propel a ball more than 50 feet. A .45 caliber handgun will propel a bullet 2000 feet, but that's still considered out of range because there is no accuracy whatsoever.

Why a rule would come in place is beyond me as it's legal to do it in real golf I'm fairly big on the rules myself, however it could be a possible exploit in the game. I think what TGC is doing is smart. It would turn into a joke if someone was making everything within 25 feet by chipping, causing more and more to then do it. Monitor and see then decide is a very good solution.

That's not accuracy. That's a large amount of luck paired with some skill, but there is still a large amount of chance involved. A marksman could hit a target with a pistol at 2000 yards, but could he do it with even a semblance of consistency? On youtube I saw what looked like someone making a 200 foot putt. Flukes do happen. I consider the video a fluke.

I am going to sound like a dutch uncle now, but here goes. If I was a new user of The Golf Club and I had come to the TGC Tours site to see what was going on, and the first thing I came across was all the finger pointing that is going on I would be heartily put off of ever coming back to the site, and apprehensive about the game as a whole. This is not the school playground where name calling and point scoring abounds. We are a group of adults playing what is "A GAME". I enjoy this game and I know that many others do too, so let's not spoil it with all the ill feeling that's buzzing around at the moment. First we had the "straight shooter" issue which is still rumbling on. Now we have the pitching and chipping on the green issue. Who knows what perceived misdemeanor will be picked on next. So come on guys and girls lets be sensible, and treat everyone with the courtesy they deserve. I know online forums in general are awash with sniping and abuse. Let's make this one different and all act like the adults we are. Next week we have the qualifying school, so let's concentrate on that, and some good sportsmanlike competition.

That is why TGCTours decided to have a discrete reporting process and a penalty system for accusations made public. This thread has largely remained a philosophical discussion about whether chipping on the greens is okay or not. From here forward, threads that point the finger of blame will be locked and individuals will be addressed privately.
I hope it doesn't have to ever come to that.
