Does your monitor have Freesync or Gsync? Edit: I just checked and the GTX 970 doesn't support adaptive sync. I used to have that card quite a few years ago, great to see it's still going and able to play this game. just a poor 60mhz monitor, no freesyc/gsync Well if your display is 60 mhz you have the fastest refresh rate screen on the planet at 60000000hz

The problem with this game is that you can only set your resolution and display refresh rate. So I can't go above my LG C2's 120hz as the game will cap my framerate to 120fps. I get around 90 to 110fps with everything maxed out on 4K. I always turn off DOF (depth of field) as that is a cinematic effect that I don't like in a sports game, it just makes distant trees and and objects blurry (out of focus). Any tips for me on my lowly laptop 😊 if you have adaptive sync on your laptop screen turn on Gsync in the Nvidia control panel.

Here is the setting in the NCP

I’ve been wanting to get into PC gaming for some time but with lack of knowledge it’s a big jump from console. Been threatening to buy a Steam Deck for months now as a stepping stone from console to PC but I’ve hesitated because of its ability to run new AAA games going forward. Does it have a future or will it be superseded by Steam Deck 2 in the coming months. Noticed it’s on sale at the minute so a good time to buy. If I could guarantee it would run the new EA golf I’ll likely go this route for the time being to get a bit of knowledge & then progress to a desk top in the future. What model is best 64,256 or 512 ?

What model is best 64,256 or 512 ? Regarding its ability to run new AAA games going forward, the Steam Deck is equipped with a powerful AMD APU that should handle most modern games. However, it may struggle with the most demanding titles and not offer the same level of performance as a high-end gaming desktop. As for its future, the release of a Steam Deck 2 in the coming months is uncertain, but newer and more powerful versions of the device may be released in the future, as is typical in the tech industry. When choosing the best model to buy, the amount of storage you need will depend on the number of games you plan to install. The 64GB model may be too limiting as it fills up quickly. The 256GB model is likely the sweet spot for most users, offering sufficient storage for a decent number of games without being too expensive. However, if you plan to install many games or other large files, the 512GB model may be worth considering. I have a 3080 graphics card and yet was seeing a lot of stuttering, even though the displayed frame rate was 200+ most of the time (never below 100). I went into the NVIDIA Control Panel and told it to limit frame rate to 100 for 2K23 only and the stutters are very rare now and I am playing much better. I have a 100hz monitor, which is why I chose 100 fps. I have heard this is not the same as VSYNC and thus far, have been happy.

The difference between capping your framerate and Vsync is that the graphics card holds back frames to sync with your refresh rate with Vsync and halves framerates if you drop below it. I assume you want to cap your framerate as you are using Freesync/Gsync and want to stay below your monitor refresh rate. I do recommend capping yours to 97 (3 frames below you monitor refresh rate) as if it hits 100 you might get screen tearing or Vsync kicking in if you have it turned on in the NCP. I actually cap mine to 117, 3 frames below my 120hz refresh rate. What is also good about this is your RTX 3080 will use less power and generate less heat and there is no need for it to generate 200fps when you don't need it.

I have not seen any tearing but I will try 3 less (thanks!) as it very likely won't hurt. I am thinking about maxing out the graphics as well (currently set to high), but I bet I don't find ultra all that much better.

I was hitting 140+ on some courses with all settings max in native 4K. But as it was above my Gsync 120hz max I was getting screen tearing as I didn't have Vsync switched on in NCP. Graphics settings are preferable to the individual but it might be worth bumping up to ultra and just drop cloud and fog settings. Make sure SSAO is on as the game looks much better with it imo. You have a very capable card so why not bump up the visuals. You could always use DLSS quality for extra framerates also.

What model is best 64,256 or 512 ? I think you need to look at the SD for what it is Gasman, a PC handheld first and a low spec PC for 1080p, more like an Xbox One in power. I honestly would only recommend it as a handheld and an emulation device. PC's are not as overwhelming as you think they are. Steam big picture mode is now the same as the Steam Deck's so you can actually have a Steam Deck console like experience for desktop PC's now. I recommend desktop to you as you want to play future AAA games and it will give you so much more. Steam Deck to me is an addition to my desktop not a replacement. Remember games are a lot cheaper on PC, stores give away loads free games, no online subscription cost. Stores competing against eachother etc The initial cost is higher than consoles but then it is so much cheaper to build up a great games library. Also your Game Pass Ultimate is for PC so you already have a big library there at no extra cost😉

Big benefit of the deck is I don’t have to retire to the office to game, I can kick back on the sofa & game in company. My biggest doubt at the minute is compatibility with EA games, I keep reading that even though games are steam purchased & deck verified they won’t launch on the handheld because of EA app or launcher issues. I’d be buying it predominantly for golf games & if EA’s game won’t launch it’ll be a waste. Talking of game costs I’ve been buying a few on steam & most have come in under a fiver….Battlefront 1 & 2 deluxe version & Fallen order ( will any of them work ??)

Yeah there is the beauty of SD is that you can take it anywhere. It is really a lovely little handheld (or should I say big), been playing some of my older catalogue and it really shines when you just want to bring your games with you. I do recommend Humble Choice as you get about 8 games for under a tenner each month and you own them on Steam unlike subscription services where you are just renting games. I know Fallen Order runs on SD not sure about the others especially if you want multiplayer shooters. There is an official option coming to Steam Deck to be able to dual boot windows and Steam OS, you can do this now but it takes a bit more work. But with Windows 10 or 11 installed it does open up more games. When Valve release this patch it will be easy for anyone to do this. But it is not really that difficult to do right now if you follow youtube guides.
