Happy Camp Canyon is located in Moorpark, CA, just north of Los Angeles. It was designed by famed architect Phil Panse, with contributions from long-time golf writer Heff Spackleford. The course is set inside of a canyon with lots of rustic qualities. A natural wash streams its way down the canyon towards the valley, and the course incorporates the wash throughout the routing, while attempting to minimally disturb the natural and native growth in these areas. The general area around the canyon serves as a recreation area, so hikers may be spotted in the vicinity during your round.
Two sets of tees, Blue and Gold, both play to roughly 7000 yards and a par of 71. The different tees offer slightly different lengths and angles at each hole, lending variety to each subsequent round. Additional Red and Black tees are also available, playing at just over 6700 yards, and offering the same variety of lengths and angles. Outside of the wash areas, there tends to be few fairway hazards, and plenty of fairway space, allowing high handicap players the satisfaction of finding short grass, while challenging the elite player to find the correct angles into each green. The greens are large and undulating, with plenty of runoff space surrounding each.
The vibe is meant to be SoCal, so grab your Linksoul Boardwalkers and your Random Golf Club hat, throw some Iration (or the Dirty Groove playlist) on the speaker, and don’t take your round too seriously (I’m from Michigan, I have no idea what the SoCal vibe is).
Another shout out to jayraygun for the logo. I made this goofy logo as an entrance sign, and then tasked him with producing a real logo that had the same essence as the one I made. I think he did a fantastic job!

This is the confessional reply. The plot and setting were meant as a nod to Rustic Canyon. I also tried to produce a very natural looking and fairly minimalist course, like Rustic, but I was finding that I really was struggling with that look. So instead I went with bolder greens with slightly more squared off edges, and then after producing the bunkers that you see on the 3rd hole, I decided to pair the greens with sort of scabby, Mackenzie-looking bunkers a la Cypress, Cal Club, etc. I’ve always been happy with the plot, but I really struggled with the routing and holes. The first 5-6 holes came pretty naturally and haven’t changed much over the life of the design, but everything after that was changed, molded, massaged, and whatever else you can think of. I disliked the back 9 for a long time, but slowly hammered it into something that felt like it could hang with the front 9.
I wish I could say everything came naturally, but it was truly a struggle. My hope is that the course, visually, represents a style and look not seen anywhere else in the game, and that as a round of golf it holds up over time to lots of plays. I have a new respect for those who do multiple design contests year after year. It’s a lot of effort to try and stand out. That’s it.

Really enjoyed my round. I definitely think you got skills for creating original, fictional designs. I think this is going to score pretty well in judging. Well done sir!

Just shot the course with a friend of mine. Nice layout. We both really enjoyed our round. My only question is did your greens and first cut rough change? Because in game looks nothing like the pictures you posted. I think the colors in the pictures you posted look better than what I was seeing on the course. It looks like the first cut rough has its own watering system because there a lush dark green. I've read in other posts that sometimes when publishing some stuff changes. Was wondering if the first cut rough and green colors changed on you? Other than that great course.

The phots posted here may have a filter effect on them, so that could account for the difference.

Yes I understand that. But it just looks totally different. Here's a screenshot of what I mean. Don't get me wrong it's a great course.

Yes, the textures were different in the photos, the current textures didn't play nice with the filters. The design of the textures was meant to mimic Rustic Canyon, where the greens and rough surrounding them are darker, likely due to irrigation. With the second texture of rough surrounding the fairways, it's definitely more prevalent than at Rustic. I've always liked a contrasting color combination, so I don't mind the difference, and I thought it looked good around the bunkers.

Greens are an absolute blast. Well worthy of four plays for those alone. And it looks nice. Best of luck!

I'm really not a fan of the dark green borders of the playable areas. That looked so much better on your screenshots. Nonetheless, a nice and demanding course!
Good luck.

Loved the open views and the greens were an absolute highlight. Just about every single green was super fun to play and cleverly scultped. Congrats and best of luck in the comp.
