Wholeheartedly agree with Ben, as the rookie contest comes once a year, but other opportunities like Design League provide more variety of design elements & will force you to work outside of what might be your comfort or experience level. I was too late to get into last year's Rookie contest, but I got into the final even of Design League and it was a blast. It's more accessible, since you have a contest every few months, with different themes or requirements. That variety helped me not be overwhelmed, but also helped me try a variety of techniques, etc. Further, to have a chance to get into other fields like WCOD, Dream Team, etc some of the criteria is courses accepted in the TGC database, number of tour worthy, etc. If the timing fits to get into the Rookie contest then great, but waiting will stunt your growth as a designer. Probably does, but not sure. Honestly, don't worry if it does. Don't wait around a year for that one contest, because you'll have wasted a ton of time in which to get better. The entry requirements change year on year anyway, so hard to know whether you'd be eligible or not.

Do cart paths have to be within the boundary too?

Do cart paths have to be within the boundary too? I'm going to say yes on this one.

I was kidding before but the design constraints of this contest really get my gears turning, this might ultimately become my WCOD course at this rate. I built a road for no real reason and somehow managed to outline the whole 6 holes with all the surfaces and what the routing of an 18 hole course would look like, I've legit never worked this quickly on a course before (maybe because it feels like Im procrastinating on my other course lol)

With how Asylum turned out, might not be a bad thing

What's the deal on planting? I've got one of my holes with all surfaces just inside the outer boundary, but I haven't planted anything yet. Does that have to be inside the boundary as well?

I assume not or I'm @!$#ed. lol I'm pretty sure just all hole architecture surfaces must be and everything else is fair game

So if I wanted to do a Dario-style town with roads off the main plot, I assume I could then.

1) I had an idea but then Q beat me to the same idea. 2) I came up with a new idea and will now be in boreal for the first time. 3) As I prepared to write this post, I noticed 15eicheltower9 has a similar looking idea...but I'm not changing a damn thing for him because... 4) I built a creek for the first time and I think it looks good 5) I built a blind, short par 4 opening hole to appeal to the Canadian judge 6) I'm building tiny greens and splining simple bunkers instead of my preferred amoeba brushes 7) Some bunkers may be blind but I'll set out some reference markers (aka fairway mowing lines) to guide you. 8) If you hit a ball into heavy rough, reconsider why you play this game. The course should be fun and not hard so the playable rough will be cut quite low. 9) This course is currently set in Nowhere, Earth. It probably ends up in Canada. I hear it's pretty up there. 10) This course might not be very good.

I've burned through three ideas so far and now I'm on a fourth. Started with something inspired by Greystone Chapel, then something Japanese, then Durban CC in South Africa and now I'm trying something inspired by Susquehannock (since csugolfer60 hasn't ported it yet).

I made the executive decision yesterday to stream the entire design of this course on my twitch channel, for fun and for practice streaming and maintaining my design composure. I am maybe thinking to save all the videos at the end of it and create a time lapse video of the course coming together, we'll see!
I am going with a sort of Northeast US course - the suburban country clubs of the NYC area (Plainfield Country Club is my #1 inspiration). I will hopefully have some cool photos to be able to upload early next week!

I'm trying to decide whether to post some screenshots or go the @vcrylnsprts route and hold everything, except for a few cryptic messages along the way....
Here's the first of them:
1. Plot is 350x800 2. All 6 holes surfaces will be contained within the plot 3. I will go hog wild with planting and might just use up all the meter 4. There will be water 5. There will be sand 6. Working idea is "Spider" 7. Par will be 24 8. This is just filler to get to a list of 10 9. Waterfalls will be fallin 10. The course routing, etc could change in heartbeat up to the deadline 11. And in keep with Spinal Tap and having my list go to 11.... It could either win a 6-hole WCOD OR it will be worse than a wizard-created course with no sculpting......
