Event 33 - 2000 WGC-NEC INVITATIONAL at Firestone Country Club - Round 2
The wind increased a little today and the greens were a tad faster, but there was nothing for the players to be unduly worried about - apart from perhaps a few pin positions. Ian McKinley's complete disinterest in the course was probably the main reason for his lacklustre 75, a score which saw him plummet to the lower reaches of the leaderboard. Overnight leader Les Souter could not get to grips with the green speed during his round and several putting errors cost him dearly. However, on the par 3 12th he removed putting from the equation by holing his tee-shot for ANOTHER ACE, his second of the tourney!! Unfortunately Les only managed a 70 which dropped him to third spot, six strokes behind the new leader. Bob Fletcher recorded his second 64 of the week, improved driving and approaches the prime causes for another impressive round, and that left him three ahead of Les and three behind the leader. And that was Tiger Woods who matched Les's opening 61 yesterday in a scintillating display of golfing skill. So Tiger is looking good at halfway but it's not over yet...

Event 33 - 2000 WGC-NEC INVITATIONAL at Firestone Country Club - Round 3
Quite windy today and the greens have become faster as they gradually dry out. Ian McKinley looked in a hurry as he just wanted to get his round played and return to his hotel, and a 79 was the consequence. Les Souter again failed to recapture his stunning opening round form, and could only repeat his even par 70 from yesterday's Round 2. However, he is still in a share of third spot, albeit nine strokes off the pace, and looks set for a sizeable payday. Bob Fletcher made a great start today with three birds on the opening four holes, but a couple of unfortunate bogeys restricted him to a 67, still a pretty good score and good enough to keep him in second place and still in contention. That was because overnight leader Tiger Woods also carded a 67 to maintain his three-shot lead going into the final round...

Event 33 - 2000 WGC-NEC INVITATIONAL at Firestone Country Club - Round 4
Not much wind for this final round but the greens had dried out completely and were ultra-quick. Ian McKinley concluded the week with a 'let's just get this done' 78, and may have been saving himself for the next two events which are both in Canada, his home country. Les Souter could do no more than card his third consecutive level par 70, but still finished in a very creditable share of 5th spot. Bob Fletcher was hopeful of sneaking a win this week and after eight holes it was still a possibility, but a double on #9 and a later one on #15 put paid to that dream. Bob also finished with a 70, leaving him in second place a full six strokes behind the victor. That was PGA Champion Tiger Woods whose closing 67 was easily good enough to collect the $1,000,000 first prize.

The final event of the Summer Bowl series of tournaments has now finished, and the Summer Bowl winner is TIGER WOODS!!!Having won the PGA Championship two weeks ago, Tiger's victory in the WGC-NEC Invitational last week saw him well clear of the opposition, and he adds the Summer Bowl to the Winter Trophy that he won earlier this season. He has also leapfrogged Ian McKinley to top the season's earnings table, but can he stay there?!
We now begin the Autumn Cup tournaments, the final 12 events of the 2000 season and the first 2 of which see us in Canada, so there is still plenty to play for!!

Event 34 - 2000 AIR CANADA CHAMPIONSHIP at Deerhurst Highlands - Round 1
Wet conditions meant the greens would be relatively slow and receptive for this opening round, and with not much wind good scores were possible. Not for Charlie Roberts, however, making his first appearance since The International at Castle Pines Charlie struggled today and an 80 was all he could muster. Les Souter wouldn't have been pleased with his relatively poor 73, while Ian McKinley played well for his 69. That score was matched by newcomer Brian McClane, making his tour debut, while last week's runner-up in the WGC-NEC Invitational at Firestone, Bob Fletcher, fired a very satisfactory 68. Bob's round was marred by only one bogey, and that came on the treacherous 15th when his drive found the fairway-splitting creek. Randy Grant registered a fine 66 in spite of collecting three bogeys, and he lies just one stroke behind the pack of four leaders.

Event 34 - 2000 AIR CANADA CHAMPIONSHIP at Deerhurst Highlands - Round 2
The wind was blowing hard and the greens were not as slow as a result, having less moisture in them. Of the six guests only two broke par. The four that struggled were Charlie Roberts (77), newbie Brian McClane (80), Les Souter (75) and Bob Fletcher (74) and any dreams of winning this week have now disappeared. Ian McKinley actually improved on his opening round by shooting a praiseworthy 68, but he is six shots off the pace and has a lot of work to do. Randy Grant fired another 66 to earn a share of 2nd place, just one shot behind halfway leader Jesper Parnevik. Can Randy add to the two titles he's already won this season?!

Event 34 - 2000 AIR CANADA CHAMPIONSHIP at Deerhurst Highlands - Round 3
The high winds were still blowing today and the greens became faster as a result. Brain McClane (76), Charlie Roberts (74) and Les Souter (71) all improved on their second round scores but all three were still rooted to the bottom of the leaderboard. Bob Fletcher carded a few late birdies in his round to card a 69, a score that helped him jump up several places, while Ian McKinley's 72 was his worst effort so far this week and saw him drop substantially in the placings. Meanwhile, Randy Grant continued to confound the form book by shooting his third 66 of the event, and he is now the outright leader by two strokes going into the final round...

Event 34 - 2000 AIR CANADA CHAMPIONSHIP at Deerhurst Highlands - Round 4
Hardly a breath of wind and very quick greens were the order of the final day's play. Charlie Roberts (76), Les Souter (75), and Ian McKinley (74) all found it hard going and would want to forget this tourney in a hurry. Bob Fletcher battled his way to a level par 71, his putting letting him down once again, while debutant Brian McClane carded a creditable 69 to equal his first round score. However, all five players found themselves anchored to the foot of the leaderboard and wondering what might have been. The only guest to leave this event with any kudos was Randy Grant. With a two-shot overnight lead and on course for his third title of the season after nine holes, Randy's game suddenly fell apart on the inward nine and he suffered three bogeys and a double before grabbing a late bird on #18 for a 71. Unfortunately for Randy that was only good enough to earn a share of second place, Rory Sabbatini bursting through with a tournament-winning 65 for a one-stroke victory!! See you all at Glen Abbey this week...

Event 35 - 2000 BELL CANADIAN OPEN at Glen Abbey - Round 1
The conditions were relatively easy today, or seemed to be, so a good start looked likely. Season money leader Tiger Woods didn't have things all his own way for a change and an unexpected level par 72 was the result. The same could be said of Les Souter who also carded a 72 when a lower score was anticipated. Ian McKinley fared slightly better, coming in with only a 71, even though he made great eagles on the 2nd and 18th holes. Bob Fletcher put his fine 68 down to a perfect mindset, but I think an unusually good day with the putter was also a contributary factor. It's still all to play for...

Event 35 - 2000 BELL CANADIAN OPEN at Glen Abbey - Round 2
There was barely any wind at all today, but the greens were a little quicker and several of the pins difficult to access. Sadly, Ian McKinley's play continues to be plagued by his health issues and he could only card an uncharacteristically poor 76. Les Souter again struggled and he could only produce another level par round of 72. Bob Fletcher failed to find his opening round form and today saw the return of his putting stroke problems. Two ugly double bogeys looked to have ruined his round, but three late birdies salvaged a 73 - not good but it could easily have been worse. Tiger Woods put his disappointing first round behind him by producing one of today's best scores, a fine 65, to leave him four off the lead and within striking distance...

Event 35 - 2000 BELL CANADIAN OPEN at Glen Abbey - Round 3
This proved to be a brutal day's play. High winds would have been bad enough on their own, but coupled with very fast glass-like greens it was nigh on impossible to post even a reasonable score. Les Souter (82), Ian McKinley (81), and Bob Fletcher (79) all suffered, although Bob narrowly missed out on an albatross on #18 by just one foot, his eagle making his round marginally more palatable. Tiger Woods, however, appeared to relish the conditions and his superb 64 elevated him to the position of joint leader with Grant Waite. The final round will now be merely academic for the guest players and their thoughts will, I suspect, already be directed towards next week's Open Championship at St Andrews...

Event 35 - 2000 BELL CANADIAN OPEN at Glen Abbey - Round 4
Much easier conditions today, rain had softened and slowed down the greens, and there was no more than a breeze to combat. Having said that, an indication that not all was well with Les Souter's game was his score of 72, his third level par round of the tourney. A bogey on the very first hole did not augur well for Bob Fletcher, but he soon put that behind him to card a 67, even saving par on the 18th when his attempted approach found the creek. Ian McKinley had looked out of sorts all week, so it came as a pleasant surprise when he conjured up a super 64, today's best round, and hopefully he can carry that fine form into this week's Open Championship at St Andrews, his favourite course. At the top of the leaderboard the overnight leaders slugged it out to the very last hole, and it was Tiger Woods who finally prevailed, shooting a 65 to edge out Grant Waite by one stroke...

Event 36 - 2000 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at St Andrews - Round 1
The mild weather provided the opportunity to get off to a good start, and all the guest players took advantage. Ian McKinley kept a 'clean' card on his way to a solid 68, a score matched by Les Souter who at last seemed to find some decent form. Randy Grant made too many mistakes for his liking but, to his credit, still managed to shoot a 67, leaving him tied 3rd at the end of the day with pre-tourney favourite Tiger Woods and PGA pro Steve Flesch. Ernie Els looked good during his round of 66 but, surprisingly, the opening day leader was Bob Fletcher who registered no less than ten birdies before finishing with a stunning 64!!

Event 36 - 2000 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at St Andrews - Round 2
High wind had dried out the greens which were now running very fast. Overnight leader Bob Fletcher couldn't handle the green speed and could only post a 77, and he was visibly disappointed after his stellar opening round. Randy Grant also found the conditions difficult but managed a not to bad 73. Ian McKinley, who enjoys putting on very quick greens, came in with a 69 to be positioned four strokes off the pace. The best guest performance came from Les Souter, who played well to repeat his first round 68, and Les is only three behind the new leader. And that is Tiger Woods whose very competent 66 was the equal best score of the day.

Event 36 - 2000 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at St Andrews - Round 3
A little overnight drizzle meant the greens were a tad slower, but still quick, and the wind had dropped which made the course more manageable. Bob Fletcher had a frustrating time with the putter again, but ended the round superbly by birdying the last three holes for a 71. Ian McKinley struggled and, uncharacteristically, carded two double-bogeys on his way to a depressing 73. Randy Grant just about stayed in the mix by shooting his second 67 of the week, but making up the seven-shot deficit between himself and the leader is a big ask. Les Souter maintained his good form and fired the equal-best score of the day, a fine 66, a score that places him just two strokes behind Tiger Woods who registered a 67 today. It looks very much like a battle between these two now, and the final round could be very dramatic...
