Event 4 - 2000 PHOENIX OPEN at TPC Scottsdale - Round 1
It's always a treat to play at the TPC Scottsdale course, but the windy forecast might make it not quite so pleasurable. The breeze wasn't so bad on the opening day, and the immaculate fast greens might even be condusive to good scoring. Unfortunately, Ian McKinley's ongoing medical treatments were responsible for his uncharacteristically poor round of 80, but all credit to the tough Canadian for even completing his round. Hans Kunok fought his way around in 70 strokes when he was probably hoping for something better, while Bob Fletcher wasn't too displeased with his opening 69. Last week's winner, Les Souter, had a few putting problems on his way to a respectable 68, and Mark Lipping made a good start by shooting a very good 65. However, the round of the day came from Randy Grant who fairly sizzled around to post an astonishing 60!! That gives him a 3-stroke lead over Tom Lehman and Phil Mickelson - but surely he can't maintain that incredible standard for the whole week, can he?!

Event 4 - 2000 PHOENIX OPEN at TPC Scottsdale - Round 2
Strong winds were the order of this round and, combined with lightning fast greens, we had a recipe for an intriguing day's play. Ian McKinley appeared to feel better today, registering a 70, but still has work to do if he is to avoid finishing rock bottom. Hans Kunok's play improved and he was rewarded with a 68, but will have to score a lot lower in the second half of the tourney to get into contention. A mixed front nine but a better back nine saw Les Souter post a 69, and a second consecutive victory now looks unlikely. Bob Fletcher's 67 moved him into a tie for 12th, but still 9 strokes off the pace. A shot ahead of Bob is Charlie Roberts after an opening 66 and today's 69, which contained 2 eagles! Mark Lipping shot another 65 and is now in a share of 2nd place with tour pro Tom Lehman, 3 strokes adrift of the leader, Randy Grant. Randy maintained that Day 1 advantage by producing a 67, but he recovered well after carding a triple-bogey on the short 12th hole. It's all to play for over the weekend...

Event 4 - 2000 PHOENIX OPEN at TPC Scottsdale - Round 3
The wind blew strongly today and the greens were firmer and faster than they had been all week. Having said that, it was to the guests' great credit that they all shot a sub-70 round! Ian McKinley's 69 was his best round of the event so far, and he now lies only 3 strokes behind tour pro Billy Andrade in his quest to avoid finishing the tourney in last place. Bob Fletcher's second 67 of the week elevated him into a tie for 9th place, one stroke adrift of Les Souter (a fine 65), Hans Kunok (a super 64), and Charlie Roberts (a solid 67) all of whom now share 5th spot with pro Robert Allenby. However, although highly placed, a win for any of them looks unlikely, given the size of the gap they would have to bridge to achieve victory. Randy Grant led by 3 at halfway, but after his 69 today he was ousted from the top spot by Mark Lipping, who became the new outright leader by firing a stunning 64. Mark's lead is 2 shots over Randy, and 8 shots over the guests tied for 5th. So it's a two-man contest now - who will prevail...?!

Event 4 - 2000 PHOENIX OPEN at TPC Scottsdale - Round 4
Rain arrived for today's tournament climax, but brought by very strong winds. At least the greens were slower which some preferred. Ian McKinley's 74 consigned him to last place, it was just that opening round that did all the damage really. To their credit, all the other guests finished in the top 20. Late starter Rich Urban, with respectable rounds of 69, 72, 66 and 67, finished in a tie for 15th with Charlie Roberts who carded a relatively poor 72, which was mainly due to the slower greens and leaving putts short. Hans Kunok's 71 earned him a share of 11th, while Les Souter's worst round of the week, a 70, in which his putter let him down big time, meant he had to make do with a tie for 7th. Bob Fletcher had bemoaned his swing timing all week but his third consecutive 67 today saw him clamber into a share of 3rd spot with tour pro Tom Lehman. Randy Grant began the day 2 strokes behind the pacesetter and hopeful of a win but, after a terrible front nine those aspirations had all but disappeared. He staged a mini-revival on the back to sign off with a 69, but it was only ever going to be enough to clinch 2nd place. Overnight leader Mark Lipping found it difficult to find the pins due to the gusting wind, but some good par saves earned him a closing 68 and the Phoenix Open title by 3 shots from Randy!
So after 4 events we have had 4 different winners, 3 of them guests, an indication of how well Ian's handicap system is working and giving everyone a chance to taste glory. See you all at Pebble Beach in the lead-up to Christmas!

Event 5 - 2000 AT&T NATIONAL PRO-AM at Pebble Beach Golf Links - Round 1
Here we are at one of the most famous courses in the world, and the weather is very hostile!! It was blowing a gale out there and the scoring illustrated how some players handled it well while others didn't. From his very first shot of the event, a drive that flew left into trees, it appeared that Mark Lipping, our winner last week, wasn't 'on his game' and he could only put together a disappointing 75. Rich Urban has progressed some way up that learning curve and he did well to card a fighting 73. Randy Grant had birdies on the last 2 holes to thank for a level par 72, while Les Souter carded 9 consecutive pars on the way to his own 72. Charlie Roberts had a run of 4 birds and an eagle on the outward nine, but in the end had to settle for a respectable 71, while Bob Fletcher was almost in a state of ecstasy after his fine 69 which included holing out from sand on #15. It was just a shame he had a triple on the 9th! Ian McKinley also made a good start by shooting a 69, but the guest performance of the day, however, came from Hans Kunok who played the wind superbly to register an opening 66. That sees him sharing the lead with tour pro's Notah Begay III and Vijay Singh, but with the weather looking like it's not going to improve much anything can still happen...

Event 5 - 2000 AT&T NATIONAL PRO-AM at Pebble Beach Golf Links - Round 2
Not quite so much wind today, but faster greens. Mark Lipping improved on his first round but could still only manage a 73, despite a super eagle on #6. Rich Urban also improved by carding a 72, as did Randy Grant when he came in with a 71 under his belt. Charlie Roberts put his lacklustre 72 today down to poor concentration, but there was nothing wrong with his focus when he eagled the 2nd! Bob Fletcher made an even worse than usual start to his round and never recovered, eventually registering a 73, while the conditions seemed to suit Les Souter who notched up a fine 68 to move into a tie for 12th in the process. At halfway Les is 7 strokes behind the 3 co-leaders, who are tour pro Vijay Singh, overnight co-leader Hans Kunok, who impressed with a 67, and veteran Ian McKinley, who stormed to the top of the leaderboard by firing a stellar 64!! It's looking like we'll have our 5th different winner in 5 events this week, but who will it be?

Event 5 - 2000 AT&T NATIONAL PRO-AM at Pebble Beach Golf Links - Round 3
Traditionally 'moving day' in tournaments, and there was a good chance of a lot of movement due to the brutal conditions today. A wind of near-hurricane proportions, coupled with bone-dry, incredibly quick greens had players switching into survival mode. Unfortunately for some, the weather proved too much - Randy Grant (80), Rich Urban (77) and Les Souter (78) all dropped to the bottom of the leaderboard after their games couldn't cope with the conditions. On the other hand, Charlie Roberts' 70 was his best round of the event so far, with a lot of putts burning the edge of the cup so he could easily have propelled himself even higher than his eventual tied 31st position. Bob Fletcher had a bit of a 'give and take' round, also carding a 70, with which he was overjoyed, and which keeps him a stroke ahead of Charlie in a share of 23rd place with the likes of Fred Couples and Mark Calcavecchia. There were developments at the business end of the leaderboard. The three overnight joint leaders were all displaced from the top spot. Vijay Singh and Ian McKinley managed a pair of level par 72's which left them locked together in a tie for 3rd, while Hans Kunok's 73 now sees him in a tie for 5th, but still in with a chance of winning. Tour pros Matt Gogel (67) and Mark Brooks (66) are the new co-leaders but there are still a big group of players who could snatch victory...

Event 5 - 2000 AT&T NATIONAL PRO-AM at Pebble Beach Golf Links - Round 4
The conditions today were probably the easiest of the week. Still windy, but rain had rendered the greens a lot slower and less precarious. Taking advantage were Rich Urban (67) and Randy Grant (66) who recorded their best rounds to end the tourney in a tie for 54th. Les Souter's second 68 of the week earned him a place in a group of players, which included Sergio Garcia, who finished tied 39th. Charlie Roberts second level par 72 round edged him one stroke ahead of Les in a share of 34th, while Bob Fletcher was visibly elated after shooting his best round at Pebble, a fine 66, lifting him into equal 9th position. Overnight leaders Matt Gogel and Mark Brooks both had their worst rounds of the tournament and consequently fell away from the top of the leaderboard. Hans Kunok had been in contention all week, and his 68 today, although good, was not quite enough to finish the job. In fact, we had a tie for first place between Ian McKinley, who also fired a 68, and Tiger Woods who blazed around in just 64 strokes, the equal best of the event as Ian had also shot a 64 in Round 2. So it was Play-Off time!
The Sudden Death Play-Off holes in the AT&T are as follows: 18th, 18th, 17th, 18th, and a repeat of that sequence if there is still no winner. It transpired that we only needed one Play-Off hole, Tiger Woods carding a birdie on the replayed 18th while Ian McKinley could only manage a par!

Event 6 - 2000 BUICK INVITATIONAL at Torrey Pines South - Round 1
It was a disappointing day for the guests, despite there not being much wind. The problems were the speed and slopes of the greens. Although he carded four birdies, the rest of Randy Grant's scorecard resembled a Sam Peckinpah movie, there was red everywhere, and a woeful 79 resulted. Charlie Roberts was glad to survive with a 75, commenting that this course is the season's toughest so far. Bob Fletcher and Hans Kunok hit a couple of fighting 74's, with Bob stating that he'd always disliked this course, but he only had two double-bogeys to blame for his less than impressive score. Ian McKinley could only muster a 73, while Les Souter's even par 72 was the best of the guests' rounds, and he put that down to some poor putting, missing several makeable putts. Surely things can only get better...
