Event 1 - 2000 MERCEDES CHAMPIONSHIPS at Kapalua Plantation - Round 1
What a brilliant course to kick-off the season with!! The guest players fared very well on the opening day, although Hans Kunok struggled in with a 74 under his belt. We welcome back Les Souter who looked a little rusty on his way to matching Hans's score, but I have no doubt he'll soon be breaking par on a regular basis. Relative newcomer Rich Urban will be delighted with his 71, placing him in a tie with Ernie Els and The Tiger himself, and he'll be hoping to stay with such illustrious company. Mark Lipping started off with a solid-enough 69, but perhaps distracted by memories of his drunken third wedding anniversary spent on this gorgeous island. At the top end of the leaderboard we have Ian McKinley after his attacking 66, but he was edged out of the top spot by Bob Fletcher, who claimed a one-stroke lead by holing a 53-foot eagle putt on the 18th!! It's going to be a fascinating week...

Event 1 - 2000 MERCEDES CHAMPIONSHIPS at Kapalua Plantation - Round 2
The winds REALLY blew in this round but, again, the course was very manageable. Randy Grant forgot all about his opening round to score a decent 70 today, which places him tied 15th with Les Souter. Les also improved by carding a 73, in spite of taking out the wrong set of clubs!! Rich Urban's 74 means he is still under par for the tournament, and in a share of 9th with the likes of Jim Furyk and David Duval. It's good to see Charlie Roberts playing again and his brace of 70's has him in 5th spot and still in contention. After his fine 68 today Mark Lipping is now tied 3rd with Tiger Woods, who moved ominously closer to the leaders by firing the best round of the day, an excellent 66. We now have co-leaders after Ian McKinley's 69 and Bob Fletcher's 70, and the tension is building nicely as we approach the weekend...

Event 1 - 2000 MERCEDES CHAMPIONSHIPS at Kapalua Plantation - Round 3
The blustery winds stayed with us to make things difficult but, all in all, round scores were not too bad. Les Souter carded his second 73 of the event and he has already found a level of consistency in his game. As the weeks go by we'll be seeing his scores gradually drop I'm sure. Randy Grant's commendable 69 was his best effort of the tourney so far, but his opening round put paid to any winning hopes. Rich Urban also fired a fine 69, also his best round, and he is performing very well, better than expected in these turbulent winds. At the top of the leaderboard it's looking very tight, and it appears the title will be won by one of the leading five players. Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are tied 4th, just 3 strokes off the pace, and 1 shot behind Ian McKinley who lies 3rd after a disappointing 72 today. Charlie Roberts burst into contention with a quite superb 66, and this could be his first PLAYPGATOUR tournament win in 16 outings. Bob Fletcher's round didn't begin well but he turned it around to record his second 70 of the week, a score that gives him the outright lead by a single stroke. The final day will be a fascinating affair...

Event 1 - 2000 MERCEDES CHAMPIONSHIPS at Kapalua Plantation - Round 4
The wind dropped a little but this was still going to be a far from easy round. Les Souter had his worst day of the event, struggling in with a 76, mainly because of putting problems on the ultra-quick greens. Randy Grant fared even worse, visiting most parts of the course en route to a poor 79. All the other participating guests did well. Rich Urban continues to climb that steep learning curve at a rapid pace, carding a 70 to finish in 7th spot. Ian McKinley managed a 71 to earn 6th place, one stroke behind Mark Lipping in 5th who could only shoot a level par 73. Mark nearly aced the 8th, but otherwise had a difficult time on the greens due to approach positioning issues. Pre-tourney favourite Tiger Woods and Ernie Els both hit fine 68's but, in the end, that would only be good enough to claim a share of 2nd place with Bob Fletcher, who battled his way to a 71 to complete a very satisfactory week. Charlie Roberts had found an extra couple of gears in Round 3 to fire a 66, and there was no let-up today as he repeated that score to win the first event of 2000 by 4 strokes and grab his first-ever PLAYPGATOUR victory, which was long overdue!
We stay in Hawaii for the Sony Open, to be held at the less spectacular, but potentially no less difficult, Waialae Country Club, so hope to see you all there...

Event 2 - 2000 SONY OPEN IN HAWAII at Waialae Country Club - Round 1
From the wide-open, rolling fairways of Kapalua to the tight, palm-tree lined fairways and problematic greens of Waialae, this will be a completely different week! On a lot of holes getting from tee to green in regulation was an achievement, and the stiffer challenge was reflected in the opening day's scores. Les Souter and Rich Urban scampered in with a pair of 74's, and old war-horse Ian McKinley could only put together a 73. Bob Fletcher fought his way round in 71 strokes and, on this showing so far, it is hard to envision another 'guest' victory as Paul Azinger's leading score of 63 adds some perspective to the picture...

Event 2 - 2000 SONY OPEN IN HAWAII at Waialae Country Club - Round 2
Conditions worsened for this round as the wind increased and brought with it rain which made the course play longer. Add to that some difficult pins and you have a recipe for high scoring - but that wasn't completely the case. Ian McKinley (74), Mark Lipping (73) and Bob Fletcher (73) all found it hard going out there today, leaving them firmly entrenched at the foot of the leaderboard. Meanwhile, Rich Urban's glowing 68 demonstrated how much he has improved over the last few weeks, and Les Souter's even better 67 indicates that he will soon be a force to be reckoned with as the rust continues to drop off. Charlie Roberts is easily the best performing guest at halfway, his fine 68 taking him under par for the tourney and earning a mid-field position. Paul Azinger extended his lead at the top to 5 strokes, 10 clear of Charlie, so a 'guest win' looks increasingly unlikely. The main aim now is to maximise earnings from the week...

Event 2 - 2000 SONY OPEN IN HAWAII at Waialae Country Club - Round 3
The wind dropped to little more than a gentle breeze today which meant that, in theory anyway, we might see a lot more birdies on the scorecards. Unfortunately for the guests things didn't quite pan out like that, mainly due to more unexpectedly difficult pin placements. Rich Urban and, surprisingly, Charlie Roberts suffered the most, when they both came in with a 77. Mark Lipping also faltered, carding a 75, while Bob Fletcher produced an almost respectable 72. Hans Kunok enjoyed his best round of the event, shooting a 71, and Ian McKinley sneaked under par by negotiating this devilish track in 69 strokes, also his best effort of the tourney. At the end of the day it saw the guests occupying 6 of the bottom 7 positions, and I think everyone will be relieved when this is all over and we head for the mainland...

Event 2 - 2000 SONY OPEN IN HAWAII at Waialae Country Club - Round 4
The pins today were the most accessible of the week, and although the wind had risen slightly today looked the most likely to post a decent score. It was way too late for any of the guests to hope for a good finishing position, so it was a fight for 'the scraps' and trying to win enough cash to cover travelling expenses. Hans Kunok concluded a miserable week by carding a 73, thereby becoming the only guest not to break par in any round. Bob Fletcher, Mark Lipping and Rich Urban all regained some credibility by shooting 69's, while Ian McKinley enjoyed his best day of the week, posting a hard-fought 68. Les Souter also impressed by recording his best score of the tourney, a very good 66, and it won't be long before he's challenging for titles. After his disastrous third round it was business as usual for Charlie Roberts, winner at Kapalua last week, and his super 65 was the equal best round of the day and meant he ended the tourney at level par, no mean feat at this course. However, the best guest performance this week came from Randy Grant, whose 67 today lifted him into a tie for 22nd. The eventual winner, by a massive 7 strokes, was Paul Azinger who led from start to finish in what was a very impressive performance.
Waialae provided a tougher challenge than expected, it really is a bear of a course, but now we return to the mainland to take on another one - PGA West, but be encouraged because the conditions are expected to be a lot more friendly...

Event 3 - 2000 BOB HOPE CHRYSLER CLASSIC at PGA West (Stadium) - Round 1
Very playable conditions today, but good putting was a must-have on these tricky greens. Rich Urban found the course a little difficult and an opening 75 was all he could muster. Both Ian McKinley (73) and Bob Fletcher (72) were visibly disappointed with their performances, and I think we expected Mark Lipping to post a lower score than his eventual 70. Hans Kunok made a satisfactory start by shooting a fine 67, but the plaudits on the first day went to Les Souter and Randy Grant who took an instant like to this fine course after they posted a pair of excellent 64's. That placed them in a tie for 2nd with three tour pros, and another one, David Toms, headed the field after a brilliant 63.

Event 3 - 2000 BOB HOPE CHRYSLER CLASSIC at PGA West (Stadium) - Round 2
The wind was a little stronger but that didn't mean there would be less scoring opportunities today, and the rain made the greens slower which would suit some but not others - we all have our conditions preferences. Bob Fletcher shot another error-filled 72 and was leapfrogged by Ian McKinley who played reasonably well for his 69. Rich Urban enjoyed a good day when he pulled a very good 66 out of the hat but is still way down the leaderboard thanks to his opening round. Hans Kunok found himself just 2 strokes off the leaders after a sizzling 65, while Randy Grant's fine 67 has him positioned a single shot ahead of Hans and right in contention. Les Souter appears to be making a serious challenge after his 66 gave him a share of the lead with tour pro's Greg Kraft and Rich Beem. The pressure is building nicely...

Event 3 - 2000 BOB HOPE CHRYSLER CLASSIC at PGA West (Stadium) - Round 3
We were back to dealing with a slight breeze, as in the opening round, but the greens were the quickest they've been so far. Rich Urban failed to get to grips with anything and a 76 was the consequence. Bob Fletcher's 71 was his best round of the week so far, but it could have been so much better if he hadn't dropped three strokes on the final hole! Ian McKinley's 68 was also his best showing, but still leaves him languishing near the foot of the leaderboard. Randy Grant waved goodbye to any winning hopes after an unexpectedly poor 74, while Charlie Roberts' 69 today sees him in mid-leaderboard. Hans Kunok is one stroke ahead of Charlie in a tie for 27th after scrambling in with a 71, but easily the best-performing guest was Les Souter. Les shot a sparkling 65 to end the day as joint-leader with Rich Beem, so he really is in with a great chance of tasting glory now...

Event 3 - 2000 BOB HOPE CHRYSLER CLASSIC at PGA West (Stadium) - Round 4
There wasn't a breath of wind today, so all the players had to tackle were the ultra-quick, bone dry greens. A major shock this week was Mark Lipping finishing rock bottom of the leaderboard after an uninspiring 77 today completed a woeful event for the 1970 top money-winner. Rich Urban (74) and Randy Grant (72) also struggled, while Bob Fletcher had his best round of the week, an almost competent 69 which will give him some encouragement for next week. Charlie Roberts' closing 68 saw him end up tied 33rd with the likes of Mark Calcavecchia, and Hans Kunok shot a brilliant 63 in an attempt to snatch the title away from the eventual winner, just falling short by 3 strokes and concluding the week in a tie for 4th with David Duval and two other professionals. Les Souter had given himself every chance of winning this week with some super golf over the first three rounds, but it looked like the preesure had got to him at the beginning of the final round when he dropped 3 shots in the first 4 holes! To his credit, he regained his composure but still left it late to surge past tour pro Rory Sabbatini, carding 3 birdies in the last 5 holes to shoot a 68 and claim victory by just 1 shot!!
