The UK is adopting a very different strategy to much of the rest of the world.
No immediate closing of schools or cancelling of gatherings, just the usual advice about hygiene and advice that anyone with any respitory symptoms should self isolate for a week.
The theory is that they have accepted that much of the population will become infected, but they want to stretch it out over a longer period of time so as to not overwhelm the hospitals in a short space of time. And that the more people become infected, the better the immunity.
I'm not a Dr but it kind of makes sense to me as a theory. Critics of it say it amounts to admitting that thousands upon thousands will die when more stringent measures would mean less infections in the short term.
China/SK have been successful in reducing infections, but the draconian measures can't last forever, and it seems likely to me it will just come back once everyone is out mingling again?
Once a vaccine is ready, it will be interesting to see which way it mutates against it. And then there are those crazy anti-vaxers who won't get vaccinated at all.

I got toilet paper a couple weeks ago as we were running low which was fortunately before people decided they needed 5 years worth just in case. Means I should have enough to last more than a month and didn't have to battle crowds for it. For now that is the most important thing as Canada is still very much in the early stages of this thing. We do have a cruise booked in the second half of October which we're not planning to cancel at this point but it may end up beyond our control depending how long this lasts or how much further their stock drops.

I work in a factory, so working at home is not an option.
We were bought by Ferrero and they are actively our ownership as of Jan 1 of this year. There is an active re-organization here at our plant and is a big thing going on for the employees at my factory.
In case others may not know, Ferrero is Italian. We are installing a new production line and there are many people from Italy here both in new employees of the plant as a whole and in working on installing this new line. Furthermore, this new line was made custom in Germany and we also have a handful of people from Germany here.
The increased international presence on top of having several hundred people work here is a worry.
Side note to my personal situation:
My father had a kidney transplant several years back. He has a yearly checkup in Madison, Wisconsin. There is a case of COVID-19 in that county and his yearly checkup is at the end of March. I advised my mother not to travel there as his immune system likely could not handle an infection (he gets a cold and fights it for 2 months) and also my parents are both in their 70s and in the hightened risk zone just based off of age.
Wow, have any plans been put in place for employee testing - if there are any tests to be found to begin with? Leadership has failed this country miserably. Not to get political but Holy Covfefe, it is hard not to because it is all connected - this was Trump's 3am phone call, an actual real crisis that affects the entire country, and he failed us and he keeps lying. Covid-19 doesn't give a damn about the economy. #EndOfTrumpRant Absolutely agree with your dad not traveling to Madison for that check up. Can one be done locally for him, maybe like a quick once over until he can go get the full check up done? I understand there may not be specialists nearby but maybe someone who can check a couple of boxes for him. Stay safe bud, and take care of those parents ( i know you will ) I advised them not to even see a local doctor unless there is a need as in a new illness/problem. His risk factor is just too great. As for my company, there is nothing different going on at all. Just a new sign that says to wash your hands and make sure to use hand sanitizer. Being in the food industry washing your hands 10 times a day minimum is normal anyways.

Here in Italy the situation is quite weird. As always, decisions, news, opinions or just voices are never on the same page. My idea is that we are a country of people too stupid and "take it easy" to do seriously what is needed to avoid a pandemy. I could tell you dozen of stories about stupidity and irresponsable behavior. Now, is by some day that people started to take it a bit seriously (you can read "PANIC") but i fear is already too late. I live in Sicily, as some of you could know. In the last days, lot of people returned here from the regions in which the virus is stronger and dangerous. For days, if not weeks, none of them has been checked in some way. We could already have hundreds of sick people down in the streets, for what i can say. Just today a ship with 3000 turists reached Palermo and it seems nobody of them has been stopped. Is not a case if here in Sicily the first cases are been turists from Bergamo, a city near Milano. From the cebter of the red zone. So now, after weeks of 0 interest and fear, started the panic. Schools closed in all Italy, movement's limitation, and by a pair of days, also deserted streets, stuff like this. Me..i losed my job 2 days ago when authority forced to close pubs and every activity after 6 p.m...so i'm now at home with my girl and my daughter. watching movies and hearing music. At least i should have more time to spend on designing my course It could be worst. Honestly i wish to come back to my parents to stay a bit with them, i don't see they by 4 months, but i could only be a danger for them..so i'll simply put my a$$ on the chair and i'll wait. We'll see what will happens..but looking the numbers, i think we are still quite far from an happy end, right now. And things will go worst in these days, at least here in Italy..before to have some improvement. But i hope to be wrong. Take care, guys. And good luck to all of you and your families.

I mentioned my holiday on the previous page in 3 months 1 days, it's to Majorca. I have heard about other people have been changing when they are going so there is some flexibility with travel agents etc at the moment here in the UK. The problem I have is with a 4 year old daughter and my wife who works in a school we have very limited dates we can go. We are only going in June because it's cheaper, my daughter has to 5 to be of compulsory school age and we booked it before my wife started working in a school, so they had to honour her holiday booked.
In terms of work, I work for a company that deliveries food and associated products to pubs, restaurants, schools, sports club and care homes. If the UK goes into an Italy style lockdown then our business is @!$#ed. We'll only have the care homes left for a temporary period.

Obviously health comes first, but I fear this thing is going to lay bare just how precarious some peoples employment/financial situation is.
UK statutory sick pay is pathetic, millions are self employed or have casual/zero hours contracts and won't be entitled to it. Something like 50%of people have no savings to fall back on.
People literally cannot afford to go 4-6 weeks with no income without falling on seriously hard times. So they could be left with a horrible choice - not go to work for health reasons, or go to work and put themselves and others at risk because the need the money.
And not to get overly political, but I don't think our leaders on either side of the pond have any understanding of the reality that millions of people live.

This was my dilemma after my wife and I both fell ill. The impact of zero income is horrible. We lived off unemployment (didn't amount to much), our 401K and the Apple stocks I had to sell (which I was hoping to leave to my kids after I passed on) and when that cash ran out, we sold practically everything we owned of any value. After that cash ran out, we begged and borrowed until I finally got my social security disability approved. My wife is still waiting on hers. I'd never be able to thank the members here at TGCT enough in a thousand lifetimes for how they helped us get through that mess. We're still in a struggle but at least we know where our next dollar is coming from. Agree with the world leader view. They have no clue. Makes me laugh when I see millionaires on a debate stage complain about billionaires. Hopefully this virus passes without much more damage to everyone. We all need to be diligent and take care of ourselves and each other. I think I may adopt the Japanese greeting of bowing

I'm 4 weeks away from travelling from Canada to Georgia to begin my Appalachian Trail hike. Fortunately Canada, with only 1 death, so far isn't on list of banned countries for travel into the US. I do have a bit of worry thinking about all the mi going with other hikers and resupply in towns along the AT. Did the trail 50 years ago after I graduated high school. Was one of the best times of my life. Just hope they don't declare no interstate travel, you will be screwed big time if that happens.

Biggest concern right now is resupply is apparently becoming more and more challenging. Walmart's and Dollar stores are seeing a run on dehydrated meals, fuel, tp etc. Many mom and pop shop resupply are closing for 30 days as are a few hostels. May end up considering doing a flip flop in June. fingers crossed
