Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced yesterday evening that the UK Government have purchased tests that have been developed that can tell you if a person has had coronavirus and if they are now immune. They apparently work in a way not to dissimilar to a pregnancy test. If they prove to be effective, this will be a big first step. It's not going to eradicate the disease but it will certainly help a lot and improve the direction Government strategies are taking to halt the disease. It would also allow people who have carried the disease and developed immunity to return to something approaching normal life. Fingers crossed they work and they are then rolled out worldwide, starting with the countries that need it the most. He also announced testing will be increase from around 5,000 per day to 25,000 per day in days and estimates that in 12 weeks the UK will be in a position where the pandemic will have past his peak and will be in decline. Key word being estimates. Still way too late on the decision to introduce all of this. Just so everybody knows, Boris Johnson ONLY introduced these new (and still inadequate) measures because of public and global pressure on him. He was more than happy to let this thing spread throughout our population because it was the cheapest option. The man deserves zero credit for any of these decisions, it's the NHS experts and scientists that deserve the credit along with the majority of common sense people in Britain who forced his hand.

The Premier League cancelled the football. A day later they government advised against mass gatherings.
Schools started closing off their own back. A day later they announced the schools are closing.
Boris isn't the man for a crisis. He wants to be the clown. He doesn't have the character to look down the camera, be serious, and say "for the sake of public health I am closing the pubs and the restaurants. You all NEED to stay at home, and btw, stop buying all the toilet roll".
Conservatives often rail against the "nanny state". Right now a nanny state is exactly what we need. Too many people simply do not understand or care about the potential ramifications of continuing to socialise unnecessarily. Nudging them isn't enough. You need to make them.
Anyone who doesn't believe me - watch this (warning - it's not pretty)

2 hrs after NYS announced a shutdown, I have 3 beers in me and no pants on. By educating myself, staying up to date with current events around the world and in the U.S i've been prepared for this. I hope you've all done the same.
Stay safe everyone.

Since I started this thread just over a week ago, total cases have grown in the US x10.

^^^ That shouldn't be a surprise with the number of tests going up...
Meanwhile...
Famed hedge fund Bridgewater predicts the coronavirus will lead to $4 trillion in lost corporate revenue for both public and private businesses in the US, according to a report the firm published Friday. “That is a very dangerous decline, and if not mitigated, it will lead to a long-lasting ripple,” said the Bridgewater team who authored the research report. The firm projects a 6% decline in US GDP for 2020, with the biggest hit during the second quarter. The firm also estimates a decline of $12 trillion for global businesses in 2020.
“Since this hit to revenues is happening throughout the world, the total hole globally will be roughly three times that—about $12 trillion. Governments are responding, of course, but in most cases these responses will just mitigate some of the ripple. Governments’ capacities to deal with this hit vary greatly and will be a major driver of markets going forward," the report stated. “Many companies will try to fill this gap by drawing credit lines, increasing their debt positions,” said the investors. If government policies don’t help fill the gap, companies are likely to dramatically cut spending, which would result in meaningful cuts in employment. Ray Dalio, who founded Bridgewater, is famous for predicting the 2008 financial crisis.

Hell, Italy is still dealing with massive deaths and they are shut down. Imagine if they weren't? We can't send infected people out into the wild. Especially people who have no idea they are infected. A doctor treated a woman for a stroke and ended up with the virus bc she had no idea she had it. A family in NJ lost 4 family members to the virus after having a group dinner. Not one. Four. Can you imagine losing 4 immediate family members like that? Interesting part about Bridgewater's comments. On one hand he says, “That is a very dangerous decline, and if not mitigated, it will lead to a long-lasting ripple". But wait..... Then he says, "Governments are responding, of course, but in most cases these responses will just mitigate some of the ripple." He needs to make up his mind.

The government needs to send out relief funds ASAP. They should be doing something along the proposal Sanders put forward: $2K/month to every adult, +$1k/month extra if there is a child in the household, for the next six months. Then tax the relief as ordinary 2020 income and collect some of it back next April in a way where the people who made the most money in 2020 pay the most back.
Our government is trying to means-test up front instead, based on financial situations from 2 years ago. People will fall through the cracks.

People need food to live. Therefore grocery stores need to stay open.
People do not need to go the theatre, the movies, the pub, the night club, or the golf course for that matter. So they should close.
Guy goes to the grocery store and then goes home - he infects 4 people. That's bad.
Guy goes to the grocery store, then for a drink with a friend, then to the movies, then for a bite to eat - he potentially infects 50. That's a whole lot worse.
It really isn't that complicated.

Damn straight, especially if that R-o is 4. If 3 of those 4 are employees..... well, you can do the math. I choose lives over temporary economic issues..

Wife and I just went to the store(s). Smith's/Kroger was out of toilet paper. Oddly, they were also out of cat litter. #ThingsThatMakeyouGoHmmm
Went to CVS. No TP there either. But they had had cat litter.
Went to the Dollar Tree down the street. We found 4-packs of TP for $1.00 each, limit four per person. Grabbed two packs for us and two for our daughter. If we were greedy people we would have grabbed 4 each between my wife and I. But we're not.

We usually go through one bag in about a week but we got a second bag just in case. I can live with rationing food or toilet paper if I had to but I don’t want a big pile of cat poop in the corner.

Lol, it was the main reason for going to the store for us today.
