SEMINOLE GOLF CLUB
Donald Ross (1929) / Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw (2017) Seminole Golf Club is ranked #12 on Golf Digest's Top 100 for 2019-2020. A majestic Donald Ross design with a clever routing on a rectangular site, each hole at Seminole encounters a new wind direction. The greens are no longer Ross, replaced 50 years ago in a regrassing effort that showed little appreciation for the original rolling contours. The bunkers aren’t Ross either. Dick Wilson replaced them in 1947, his own version meant to the imitate crests of waves on the adjacent Atlantic. A few years back, Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw redesigned the bunkers again, along with exposing some sandy expanses in the rough. Seminole has long been one of America’s most exclusive clubs, which is why it’s exciting that it will host the 2021 Walker Cup. “How much of a shot-maker’s haven is this? Ben Hogan would come here to practice before playing the Masters. You must have complete mastery of your long and short irons to score here.” “I’ve played Seminole with several past finalists in U.S. Amateurs and former Walker Cup players. To watch them struggle to break par on a course not overly long by today’s standards tells you how tough the course can play for some of the best golfers around.” “You wouldn’t expect a Florida course next to the Atlantic Ocean to have some serious elevation changes. That’s just part of the uniqueness of Seminole.” “The layout moves in all directions, so the wind from the ocean will impact you in multiple ways. While the yardage is short on several holes, there is elevation change, sea level and wind to contend with that makes the course play longer.” While I don't think the difficulty of the course necessarily translates in-game, and the Coore & Crenshaw renovation made it play much wider than it used to, don't be afraid to crank the wind up to get it swirling like it does in real life, there's definitely some fun shots out there.

I'll probably play it. Just hope the fairways aren't lumpy. I literally could not find a single post-C&C renovation picture lol, not even on C&C's website. I went entirely from a couple realllly old Youtube vids, old photos of the clubhouse, and Google Earth overheads.

If I understood well, this could happens cause renovation works could be still not finished. If I remember well what I have read some time ago, these renovation works started in 2016 and the end was scheduled for the 2019. And these works were mainly about bunkering (I think to remember that in the article they were talking about 100 bunkers to renovate). On every map I found of the course, there is no trace of these works. I can see the time to back at home just to try it! It looks beautiful!

I think it's done, at least it isn't in C&C's finished portfolio or their current projects on their website. I think Seminole just loves playing into that "exclusivity" reputation, they denied Jack Nicklaus membership at one point lol. But yeah, the bunkers used to look like this, I don't know if "iconic" is the right word, but they were definitely recognizable: From the Google Earth overheads (and their work on other courses), C&C's bunkers look to be much more natural looking and I'm sure were returned to the old Ross-styled bunkers.

Yes, I have read that the goal of this renovation was exactly to return to the Ross style, after the works in the '60's made by Dick Wilson..and considering how good are Creen&Crenshaw, I'm sure they made a great work. This course was very needed. I'm really thankful for your work. Ah..i was curious to know if you have some idea if there are good lidar files upon courses like Crooked Stick, the National Golf Links of America, all the 3 courses at Bandon Dunes, The Camargo Club, Shoreacres, Southern Hills Country Club and..well..too many, I know it This tool is simply fantastic, I noticed that almost every day I check the thread of completed course with the hope to find ll a new gem And the best part is that often I find it!! Is becoming a malady. A beautiful malady, how the good old Tom Waits could say. Thank you again!

I haven't played it yet, so not sure if they used LIDAR or what it looks like in game. The LIDAR data that I found is very accurate, pretty much the same quality as the Fishers Island data that I used. So far I've just got the clubhouse and 3 holes done, but I'm loving the result (this pic was pre-2nd hole so no windmill yet):

But..are you sure there is an already published NGLA? The last time I checked (some week ago) I have not found it. I asked in some thread some time ago and it seems there is only the old version for tgc2, but still not ported in tgc2019. It could be that is published but with some other name? I would be curious to check it. Today I checked the two versions of Shoreacres we have. But sadly they are semifictional. The routing of the course is more or less correct..but any other thing is just too inaccurate. And looking the satellite map, it seems a fantastic course. (this is all fault of Joe. He infected me with the awful virus of the architecture applied in golf and now I'm going crazy to learn. Everything. It will ends in the same way of rfactor. To understand how to drive faster the indycar, I learned almost everything about the cars, the setup, the circuits and then all about the history of the Indycar. This time I know is not my fault. I swear! #BlameJoe)

Not sure if it's the same designer/version ported over from TGC2 or not though. CLV is currently working on Shoreacres, but I don't think there is LIDAR data on it. Not 100% on that. I thought about taking on Sleepy Hollow, but there's no LIDAR on it either (coming this year or next) and I think JoeGolferG is doing a pseudo-RCR of it anyways.

I seem to recall Craig showing a pic of Shoreacres post LiDAR import. I'm considering looking into Camargo after I finish Friars Head. Somebody already traced it in OSM and it's been entered into the course claimer spreadsheet, but I think that was a long time ago. Can't wait to give Seminole a spin! I drove by the entrance a few times when I visited Jupiter once. and actually walked along the beach that adjoins the course, but the foliage is much to thick to see anything through.
