After a couple of pretty heavy WIP threads, I'm going to go much more minimalist with this one. Theme is probably Boreal - haven't touched it before now, but have an idea that I like and look forward to getting it out there. Will be good to see what everyone else comes out with - best of luck, all.

Ok then, maybe a couple of screenshots. Just because I'm enjoying the texture fun so much. Still undecided on planting strategy, particularly underneath the pines, but I'll keep trying different things until I find something that fits then come back and redo it:

Is that boreal I spot 😜 Thank you and yes, it is! Lots of inspiration taken from various different courses both in-game and IRL - I'm sure people can spot a few. It'll look a lot better once the holes around the first are sorted; having just had a quick play, you'll hopefully get a really cool 'wander through the pine forest' look, where you glimpse lots of different holes at various points in the round. The routing is also a little quirky, meaning there are some nifty spots where four or five holes meet, so just need to exploit that a little. Riotous, hope yours is going well!

I have a question - how do you make such sharp and small variations in bunker edges (shown below)? Everything I try just results in much rounder and smoother curves.

I have a question - how do you make such sharp and small variations in bunker edges (shown below)? Everything I try just results in much rounder and smoother curves. So this technique is stolen from Reebdoog via MattF27, so all credit to them - take the very final brush (looks like a gingerbread man) on the 3rd page of bunker brushes, make it a bit smaller or advanced edit it so it’s super thin and then just spam click as you move it around (you can also rotate, move and click at the same time). It takes a bit of patience and trial and error as the hardest part is actually (for me) gauging how quickly to click so it isn’t too bubbly or too smooth. It will take a while to get it looking good and sculpting them after is also a pain but it fits the look I am after. Check out Bandit Ridge, Timber Knoll and Copper Dunes for some other really good examples of how to use it.

Gr8 I will give it a try. Thx for the fast response. Worth bearing in mind that it will look different/better in certain themes. Boreal gets that grey lip and I've had success with this technique in Delta as well (see below), but it's a very different look:

Yeah, it is a shame that Boreal bunker lips elicit such strong negative reaction from so many designers. I like it myself, it is not realistic but there are really no theme lips that are, since most bunker lips IRL are dirt. I used Boreal on my first design, Arboreal Ponds.

So, I really wasn't seeing anything on this plot and other than the first two holes, it was super bland, but thanks to the gentle encouragement from PithyDoctorG and joegolferg earlier, I blew up most of the holes I had routed, made the whole landscape bolder and re-routed everything. After about four hours of changing the landscape pretty drastically, finding some green sites and then routing from there, I'm feeling miles better with this project and it's nice to actually have clear ideas for pretty much every hole and detailed sketches for holes 1-9. There will be some bold holes here - I think the 8th will be the bravest thing I've attempted in the designer - and it's miles away from the vision I initially had, but I guess that's part of the process! I will likely go dark for a while now as I actually get some more work done on producing the holes. Anyway, at least I don't feel like I'm holding back with this course and there should be some fun golf. As a final shot for a while, here's where the routing led me. Slightly disappointed that it'll be a par 72, but there's certainly some quirkiness in there, particularly with the par fives!

This looks really good already Ben........ so what does it feel like to be one of the veterans this time around? As a fellow designer and TGC friend I wish you good luck in this comp.

Not so much veteran, but the feedback from all the playthroughs of Ganglesee was great in terms of giving a few points for focus but also knowing to trust my gut instincts m. The two holes I never really loved (16 and 17) showed up as probably the weakest and I would now have the confidence to scrap them and start over. Working with sketches on my Greenstone River project has definitely helped, too. Best of luck to you as well, Dian!

I'm really not good at this whole 'not planning to post too many updates' thing. Good news is, after yet another remodel of the plot, I now have 17 of my 18 holes mapped out, very happy with the vast majority and have found a planting strategy. mattf27 , hoping I haven't subconsciously nicked yet another thing from you via the Joy of Planting megastreams, along with the bunkers, the other bunkers, the surface textures and the starting over six times... Anyway, I finally love this plot and I'm locked in. Have a sneak peek at hole two (a couple of people may appreciate my first ever attempt at a Redan gamesdecent , joegolferg ): It does also build out the back of the first hole quite nicely: Based on the early feedback I've had from the CC contest, things I'm working on are: bunker sculpting, green sizes, smoothness of sculpting, not veering from my core philosophies for the course and just continuing to work on playability and how I use hazards to make a hole more interesting. Should be a lot of fun.
