Hiya,
Taroko is Dian, hence why you can't find that one. At time of starting Marlette, I had just Fairview and Ganglesee on the database - you can check release date from Greenstone and Marlette you know. At the time, results for the CC hadn't been finalised (Ganglesee would finish 10th, so not in the top 6 anyway).
Appreciate the sort of compliment though and right to check, for sure. I actually talked to both Patrick and Eric before signing up to check that I fit the criteria - also made clear that I would understand if they deemed me 'too good'.
Best, Ben

Long ways to go yet - we'll see. Plenty of people that don't like the course . Edit: also, for what it's worth, all I've done to try to get a bit better has been watch streams, tutorials and then practise stuff. No rocket science. A lot of hours went into Marlette and Greenstone, but loads more went into Ganglesee, which, looking back on it, I now feel I could have done much better. That managed 10th in the CC contest and that was my first proper course. There are others in this contest with that number, so I definitely feel that shows others can do it. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that ryanmcconnell, gamesdecent, CiB0RG, @spartan4knight and a number of others didn't have many publishes when they entered last year, so I'm totally expecting a stunner out of nowhere.

I don't think the other courses published for this contest even have 1/4th the plays, combined, as yours already lol. When I saw it was at 1300+ plays already I was like wait, that's his rookie course he just published right? Hahahaha. I like your course a lot, but I will say that your influences are definitely noticeable. I get a vibe that it was mostly inspired by courses we just saw in the CC and Dream Team comp. Not sure how it will effect judging, if at all. But just by the reception so far, your course is blowing everyone away by miles.

I wouldn't put too much thought into the number of plays with these courses. The ones that get published early tend to attract curiosity and get picked up by societies and such. In last year's rookie contest I made it into the final four with ryanmcconnell SkinniePost and beef (those last 2 have since disappeared). Ryan and Skinnie both had several thousand plays on their courses already, Beef (if I remember correctly) had somewhere around 2000 plays as well. My course had less than 200. (Probably my fault because I waited until the last 20 minutes of the deadline to publish it.) So by the number of plays my matchup to Ryan should have been a blowout, right? 200 vs thousands?!?!? Not exactly. From what I hear the judges had one hell of a time debating and I ended up losing by a measly .1, that's right, 1/10 of a point. And Ryan ultimately ended up winning the entire contest with The Dunes at Lake Marie which still remains one of my favorites. But you get the point. Some courses catch fire with plays and others might not... but the judges assessments are the only thing that really matters in the end.

Could you imagine how much it must suck to lose by a tenth of a point? Yikes!!

Most of the guys last year didn't have many publishes. Others were already somewhat established but were able to get in under the requirements which were revised for this year. Technically I would have not been able to compete last year if the rules had been the same as the current ones. My "rookie" contest course was my 4th career contest entry. But that was also before we had a schedule of official TGCT contests so who knows.

Well, i believe 3 of us published the same day, or 1 day apart. Right when the window opened. You can just tell his was far and away the early favorite. his WIP thread was blowing up, and his completed course thread blew up immediately. obviously the judges are the ultimate deciding factor, but just the initial response seems overwhelming the Marlette. Which i can see translating over to the judges also receiving it very well. I signed up for this to learn, so winning this was at the far back of my mind any way. But i was just pointing out how popular his course was 2 weeks into the publish window. People have been publishing since the window opened and we arent even close in the popularity contest so far lol. I hope he wins at this point after seeing the reception he had gotten. would be a shame not to win at this point.

well to be fair... unlike some of the newer guys that signed up, lots of people already knew who Ben is. So that helps when people see a name they recognize. The best part about the rookie contest is that there is a great possibility of a total sleeper out of nowhere making a deep run. Marlette is a great track but that's not to say a course with very few plays couldn't give it a run for it's money. You never know!

Also worth adding that once you hit 300 plays, it skyrockets due to hitting the recent Handicap rated courses. 300 is as good as 2000 to be honest. As Justin says though, plays is far from the only factor.

This weeks promo event, no in fact most weeks on tour prove how much course design and enjoy-ability is in the eye of the beholder. I really love Kong Island and Rayner Ridge but not so much Pacific Spirit, itβs just personal preference, many many people are the opposite. There are 2 or 3 designers in this contest whose skills are very refined but have the got the best bunkers as well as the best course lay out as well as variation, yes they probably do π but no ones going to walk away with this easily, particularly due to the random grouping of the contest.

Getting a lot of plays may indicate that a course meets at least some standard of quality, but:
1. the inverse is not necessarily true; lots of good courses are overlooked.
2. that does not indicate that a course is necessarily better than any other course.
I think lots of plays is just a sign that the right people like the course and it gets thrown up into the suggested list or picked up for society play.

Plays are like par... irrelevant. After my brief hiatus, I am very interested in playing all these courses and see who I pass the torch to. Good luck to you all!

Those of us entrants with the asterisk next to our name were in the CC Design Comp just before this one, so we already have some exposure as new designers ( me not so much as b101 and MyGolfGameSucks as they both had really nice submissions in the CC Comp}...BUT with that said, I would think that puts a little more pressure on us to show improvements over our last competition course. I for one am hoping Mulligan Grove makes it out of the first round of cuts as my Stony Point GC course was in the group of first cuts in the CC Comp.. Anyway, I'm off to get some rounds in on those that have published already, so far I've seen some really nice tracks thus far! Good Luck to all y'all fellow competitors as we near the end of the publishing window!
