Two differences between Detroit and Vancouver: 1) Detroit has a hockey team worth watching. 2) Many people would like to continue living in Vancouver.
1) Detroit's hockey team is pretty awful too, but at least we get Stevie Y back 2) Yes, that's why housing values are high. That's the way it works.

See that's where you're wrong. Prices have nothing to do with the people who live here. Salaries haven't increased in decades, yet prices skyrocketing. Values are too high because stashing hot money is easy in Canada -- Google "The Vancouver Model" -- and offshore money is flowing in like a tidal wave. Housing has become a commodity, with many, many, many properties bought, and then sitting empty. It's not like ever foreign investor wants to live here, but they do want to own here. Billions and billions being spent by people that have no interest in contributing fair share of taxes, or in making their neighbourhood or city a better place. It's a housing stock market where flipping is the norm. Folks who used to live and work here can no longer afford their property taxes -- we have no cap per se. The city sets the tax rate year on year. Average property tax in our area $10,000 a year and rising, while nobody's income is going up that rapidly.

The percentage of wages that go on rent/mortgage (plus deposit) payments has gone up MASSIVELY in the last 20 years. The older generation can crow all they want about how hard they've worked and what they've got, but the fact is they had it easy compared to the vast majority of people now. Their achievements aren't that great, everybody did it. It's much harder now... I almost feel like you are a troll but I'll bite. You are going to minimize what a generation has accomplished ? Makes me think you don't know what it takes to be successful. You do realize small business employs the most people right? I have stared death in the face because of stress. You have no idea wtf you are talking about. Life is hard. If you want leave a legacy or at the very least give your kids something you didn't have it's a huge sacrifice. I swear it's like talking to children. Although my 10 year old would walk circles around you. So wtf do you do for a living ? |
