Imagine the fines and suspensions that would incur if it happened now.

Because goalie fights are fun, and somehow Rob Ray was there...

So much for my start of the season concern about the likelihood of seeing Washington early in the playoffs. I guess it was more Holtby owning the Bruins than it was the Capitals. Despite only lasting 5 games it still felt like a close series that could have gone either way. The Bruins did seem very focused the whole time and didn't really make many mistakes all series, so it feels like the team should be a tough out for anyone.

LOL Oilers.
Since 2010, the Oilers have drafted: 1st (Hall) 1st (Nugent-Hopkins) 1st (Yakupov) 7th (Nurse) 3rd (Draisaitl) 1st (McDavid) 4th (Puljujarvi) 22nd (Yamamoto) 10th (Bouchard) 8th (Broberg) 14th (Holloway)
For those scoring at home, from 2010-2016 the Oilers: - picked no later than 7th - picked in the top 4 six times - picked 1st four times.
In the time since drafting Taylor Hall in 2010, the Oilers have missed the playoffs 8 times and have won one playoff series in the three times they did qualify.
Three of the last 4 Hart Trophy winners were Oilers draft picks: McDavid (2017), Hall (2018 - won with NJ), and Draisaitl (2020) with McDavid poised to win a second time this season.
How is this possible!?

I guess now would be a good time to discuss the very busy last week and how things have changed. I'll hold off on saying much about the Bruins yet since it seems like every time I turn around they've signed or traded someone else. Think I'll wait until Sweeney takes a breather before I evaluate things, especially since he's almost certainly got another trade or two on the way.
I will say I was excited about the Taylor Hall signing and ordered a Hall jersey within minutes of it being announced. Seemed safe with the 4 year contract but now the signing of Nick Foligno who also wears 71 has me concerned that I could have an obsolete jersey before it even gets to me.

Um, so, uh, yeah. Some things happened this week, huh? Rangers went full Dolan, and I'm scared. I think this will be a turning point in the wrong direction. I am stunned by the developments surrounding the Rangers this week. Shocked by The Statement and by the subsequent firings of Davidson and Gorton. I honestly don't know how to process it, but my bones tell me it's not going to be good. Update: It's going about as expected. Buchnevich is out, swapped for Sammy Blais and a 2nd. This is a cap-clearing move and a gross underestimation of what Buchnevich is as a player. Without a corresponding move, this is a downgrade. The rest of the moves have just been depth signings, increasing bulk and not much else, and losing Colin Blackwell to Seattle isn't a big pain. There is now immense pressure on the younger players to produce - Kakko, Lafrieniere and Kravtsov. Idk about whatever plan Drury has, but the Rangers today are not as good as they were yesterday.

I like the moves Sweeney has made for the most part. Don’t think I was expecting him to bring in 5 new UFA’s and resign the recently acquired UFA’s in Hall and Reilly but he spent a lot of money without really going overboard on anyone. Obviously I’m a big fan of the Hall resigning and $6 million seems reasonable and fits in to the teams salary structure. To have Hall, Bergeron, Marchand, and Pastrnak making about $25 million combined is a beyond crazy.
Linus Ullmark for 4 years seems an indication that Rask’s future is very much in question. Out until January or February at least and about all Rask has said is he’ll either be with the Bruins or retire. Wait and see but Ullmark should be a good replacement seeing that he managed good numbers playing for Buffalo last year. Swayman was really good during brief stint in the NHL so it’ll be good to see him get a longer look.
Reilly and Forbort fill some holes that existed most of last season but certainly aren’t flashy names in any way. Could still use someone else to fill a spot in the top 4 but the defense has improved from where it was a year ago.
The bottom 6 at forward got reshaped with Nick Foligno, Eric Haula, and Tomas Nosek. The Foligno signing brings back memories of the Backes signing, but it’s only 2 years and $3.8 million per so it’s not a huge commitment. And if he doesn’t work out maybe Toronto will give up another 1st round pick to get him back.
That puts 5 players on the bottom two lines that can play center or wing so there should be no shortage of line options for Bruce Cassidy to play with. Then there’s still another 5 or 6 players behind that who are NHL capable players so forward depth is really strong right now.
Only about $1 million in cap space left with a big hole at 2C where things still seem optimistic with Krejci coming back but there’s no guarantee. Players like Chris Wagner, John Moore, and possibly Jake DeBrusk feel like spare parts right now that could be moved to make some cap space.
Overall this feels like a refreshed team that has transitioned away from most of its old core while maintaining contender status hopefully for at least a couple more years.

So much for Krejci coming back. He'll be hard to replace especially after he played so well with Hall. I assume Coyle will get the first crack at the job. If he can't hack it then they'll probably try Haula or Foligno there as well and perhaps Studnicka if they want to give him a chance. Hopefully someone works out or a trade for a solid 2C can be found.
