Interested in hearing what everyone's favourite "Golden Oldie" game was. For me, it was Binary Systems' Starflight (1) -- hands down. Having a massive universe to explore, and several races to interact with, along with a mystery to work out, led to more all-nighters than my wife cares to remember!
What's your all-time favourite from back in the day?

Socom still was the best multiplayer game ever. 2002 but close enough. God what amazing gm. Back then no patches either.

I spent hours and hours playing this game. Such a blast. I played the sequel too. Another game I played a lot besides the Links games was one called Balance of Power, a geopolitical game > en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_Power_(video_game) (I've pushed the nuke button and it isn't pretty lol)

Owned it for a while.... Although the premise/concept was really intriguing, I found that I just got bogged down in minutia, and never seemed to get anywhere with it. Suffice it to say, I had no future in geo-politics. Sounds like you didn't either, but for different reasons! :-)

(Gonna show my age here)
ZX Spectrum - the original Football Manager (circa 1982), Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy Amiga - X-Com and Civ 2 (both about 1988-1990), then Football Manager (various versions) from about 1992 onwards.
Leaderboard golf as well.
On overall gameplay time, would probably have to be Civ 2.

Oh crap, almost forgot the grandfather for ALL team sports games that we play today; EARL WEAVER BASEBALLI spent more time in this game than any other for a few years. I think EWB2 was the first to deliver a "broadcast camera" type of gameplay. I remember being blown away by it. I built some great stadiums in this game too. I wish The Show would add that feature to create your own stadium.

Great question.
Monkey Island and Grim Fandango are up there as are N64 classics like Zelda Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. If I were to pick one though it’ll be the Champ Manager games (now Football Manager). Lost many hours to that bad boy and still do...!

River Raid on my first computer ever, the Commodore 64.
Then I loved the first parts of Sim City pretty much. Ohhh... and Civilization of course. That was incredible.
Finally Anstoss 3, a german Football Manager. Was also pretty much involved in the Community & with the Developers there. That was fun too.
