It's frustrating that people who support the President's agenda point to the economy and say that it's so great. They point towards record profits, record stock prices, and low unemployment figures. But they skip over a few important facts:
- Wages have not increased
- Fewer than half of all Americans own stock
- Insurance premiums are at all-time highs
Let's be clear, not all of this is the fault of the President - just as the President cannot be credited with all of the good measures. But his policies make these points worse.
Low unemployment with low wages just means that more Americans are working harder than ever just to make ends meet. Wages are the most important measure, and we're struggling to get people to be paid $15/hr.
Gains in the stock market do not meaningfully impact the people who need to be making economic gains. This is quite literally the rich getting richer. The record corporate profits - as predicted - are not tricking down to workers. Instead, we saw record stock buybacks which increased the wealth of the wealthy.
The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), while noble in nature, failed to eliminate corporate profits. Basically, this means that insurance companies are making profits as a direct result of the misfortune of others. The Republicans' only solution: kick people off the system and deny benefits. Some Democrats' solution: Do nothing. Progressives' solution: single-payer, expanded coverage for everyone, paid by taxes - not by premium.
So, the President can point towards "the economy, stupid" all he wants, but the fact is that the economy is only working for the rich. For most Americans, the economy hasn't improved their lives in any measurable way.
