Phoenix Sands GCR @ HS Isles vs Jacobs Creek and Lauren Hills GC
Judge 1:
Jacobs Creek and Lauren Hills GC
From the opening tee shot this course excited me.
There is some fantastic rock work done here
Bunkers are well placed and smooth
Green are challenging but I did not mind that so much because I like to be challenged. I did think there were too many dome like pin positions, not my favorite but the firmness of green did not affect my putts so much that it was a ping pong effect.
Planting was well placed but for me I would like to see a bit more color.
Also a walking path or cart path might benefit the course, I believe there was one or 2 holes going over a short creek with no walking bridge.
Was enjoying my round so much I forgot to write down the exact holes.
Not seeing a clubhouse anywhere, and just feel that a clubhouse should always be visible from 1, 9 (coming in need to pee! ,10 (heading out after a beer) and 18 (back home to turn in my card.)
I give this course a 8.5 out of 10 and yes I would play this again and certainly mark it in my favorites. Nice job.
Phoenix Sand GCR
Before opening the course, I expected a sand course due to the name. Silly me. Was surprised to see Delta theme but pleasantly pleased with the opening hole, the lightening was perfectly and the grass seemed to glow. Overview I could clearly see where I was going from hole to hole. There were a few things wrong here but nothing that cannot be fixed easily.
Some of the bunkers were a bit large( #4 in particular) and needed some extra smoothing. Grass in bunker on 3rd hole right side. And on #7 fringe. The fringe on hole 3 is rather wide would dial that down some. I would remove the double fairway on 10 and 15 it serves no purpose. The green played well, but the sloping was in areas that really did not effect my landing shots. could improve there.
My biggest concern was the jaggedness of fairway to fringe, it appears to me a circle brush was used to follow the edges. The designer would benefit in just enlarging the same shape a few notches to give it a smooth transition from one to the other.
Like the use of a double fairway on 9 and 18.
I am giving the designer a 6 of of 10. because there is potential here, would suggest investigating checking out the tutorials by crazy canuck on laying out fairway, fringe, and heavy rough as well as bunker smoothing. It's what I like to call a fix'er upper.

Pros:
-Gorgeous course. From the very first tee, I was blown away by the lighting and textures and overall "feel" and look of this golf course.
-Shorelines/beaches very realistic and pretty. Delta theme is tough, in my opinion, to make look really nice. This did.
-Nice minamilist planting. The grasses near tees (almost all) and greens (rarely) look very natural.
-Bunkering - good shapes and good placement.
-Great green complexes - just the right speed/movement/firmness for a challenge, but not insanely so; pin placements are very good.
-Love the shared green on 9/18.
-Overall clean look to this course.
Cons:
-Plantings around a few of the greens a bit too close to the fringe. Errant shots are difficult to see one's lie on those.
-Bunkering - contouring/smoothing needs a bit of work. Not all, but many looked rather chunky/unsmooth. This might have been due to the water level being so close to their level.
-Not sure about the color choices of green vs. fairway; the contrast is a bit unnatural. One seems to clash against the other. A minor point, though, and just my opinion - completely subjective and did not impact my score.
-Some of the islands look a little fakey, such as off to the right of the fairway on 13. Little bit of work on those needed to make them look more natural.
-Noticed some irregularities between cut transitions, looked a bit rough in places (Fairway to light rough, green to fairway to light rough), lacked smoothness.
I really enjoyed my round - a very fun course to play, with just enough challenge to keep it interesting, and aesthetically a great looking course.

Pros:
-Beautiful course in every aspect, from textures, lighting, plantings, terrain/elevation, water, etc.
-Love the rocks, as my partner pointed out. Very well done. Lots of time and hard work went into the placement of every rock on this course. And every one of them belongs on the course where it is at - very organic. #4 is a great example. So is #5. And #9. And #11. And #14. Heck, all over the place.
-Bunkering is superb. Period.
-Contouring of the fairways is well done. Almost linksy - the ground game is actually important on this course's fairways. Read the terrain where your ball will land, or you will get a crash course in what "ground game" means.
-Love the greens. Again, almost linksy - rolly-polly with lots of movement, and approaches require lots of attention to predict ball movement to the hole, or a BIG price will be paid. However, unlike typical links greens, these are at least a little on the softer side and slower, so more forgiving and thus accessible to a lot more golfers. Really like the greens on this course, although I struggled. VERY challenging. These greens kicked my ass, repeatedly. Multiple bogeys. Yet - I loved them.
-Very minimalist planting - looks to me like whatever natural grasses/plants were there already were used to advantage, without adding additional. If so - it works here, especially with the boreal forest theme.
-Fantastic routings. Every hole is a challenge in re. distance/landing zones from tee to approaches. A lot of very unique holes that will keep you coming back for multiple plays.
Cons:
-Not sure about the distances on #5. This par 5 is a bit aggravating, although perhaps that is the point; one cannot reach the green in less than 3 - at least I don't see how - but the 2nd shot can't come anywhere near the 2nd staggered fairway so the golfer is forced to use a very small iron to progress the ball a little way further down the 1st fairway, before making the important 3rd approach shot to the green. That 2nd little shot is a bit anti-climactic. I think if the 2nd fairway was extended a ways, so that it was at least reachable with a 2nd shot - even with some wind behind you - it would provide more satisfaction, seeing as how the green isn't reachable in 2. Just my opinion.
-As my partner pointed out, perhaps a clubhouse at the end of the round; just a small aesthetic "need" of mine, but lends a sense of "job well done, now head to the clubhouse for a refreshing beverage." Not a huge thing, however.
-Red stakes around the water. Yeah, yeah - water bad, got it. Redundant.
This course was like a girl I dated briefly for about 2 weeks in college - kicked my ass royally, but oh what a sweet sweet pain it was. And her name was Lauren!
This is one of only 2 courses I have judged in the Invicta contest so far that I actually favorited and intend on playing again and again. Loved this golf course!
