I have to admit, this course does not suit my style of play. I play by feel, I have never used charts or anything like that, and the elevation changes here make playing like that very difficult. So I am not expecting much today, not going to worry about making the cut or my score, but am going to try my best, try to have some fun and see what happens. Also! I do love a challenge and this course to me, is a challenge. I found the fairway on the first which was a positive start, not so positive was my approach which did not reach the green and rolled down the fairway about twenty five yards. My next two shots rolled of the green before I missed a putt for triple bogey.i know had my first goal of the round, getting back to even par.I missed the green again on the second but this time I avoided any disasters and made par. I got one shot back on the third, a good chip after I again missed the green. The fourth was a hole where I could have gone aggressive and looked for a birdie, instead I played ultra safe and just came away with par, I took zero chances, not very exciting but honestly I thought it was the best option on a hole that has caused me problems in the past. The fifth also has caused me problems and hitting the bunker from the tee was not good, my second shot was pure swing and hope and I was surprised to get near the green, just ten yards from the flag, I chipped on for a unexpected par. The sixth brought more surprises when I played the hole well from start to finish, a tap in birdie after I made the green for a change. Seven also went well, staying on the fairway for my first two shots gave me a good chance to pitch close which I did to get back to even par and goal number one met, now to try stay as close to par as possible and maybe pick up a shot along the way. No chances were taken on nine, no driver from the tee, no pin seeking on approach, par is what i wanted to finish the front nine even, par is what I got.
The tee shot on ten is the sort of shot that scares me, a straight tailwind helped though so there was no issues finding the fairway. A fringe bounce on approach left me a tricky putt that I was happy to lag close for a safe par. I had a birdie chance on eleven, I left my ball eleven feet below the cup so I could be a little aggressive on the putt, was just not aggressive enough and fell short. Another scary tee shot on twelve and while I thought driver would be fine, i elected to play safe and went three wood. I got the distance on my approach right but hit the ball left of the cup, I still had a chance and a good putt brought me under par for the first time. Now I had to force myself to try stay calm, not to force any shots and take par until the next chance comes along. I wanted to play short on thirteen what I did not want was to play fifteen yards short of the green, a good chip saw me go close and was happy with a safe par. The elevation on fourteen is exactly what I mean when I mentioned playing by feel being difficult here, I picked the wrong club, was a bit to aggressive and went off the green, again though, a good chip came to my rescue and par was made. More troublesome elevation on fifteen, not surprisingly, another green missed, this time though I had to be very careful with my chip, I was above the hole and over hitting would bring disaster, on the other hand, to soft and my putt was going to be a nightmare. I left it to short and ended up with the putt I was fearing. I never hit a putt so gently, my club barely touched the ball but it was enough to get close and par, that hole could have gone so wrong. I could have played a better approach on sixteen, maybe a bit to cautious but par was never in doubt so can't complain. Seventeen is a nightmare type hole for me, downhill, over water and a headwind so I was surprised to find myself with a birdie chance. I just missed, it was not a easy putt, a downhill putt, so I could not be aggressive but it was a chance missed. I nearly did it, I nearly made it to the end under par. The last caught me out, off the back of the green and I could see this was going to be tough, the pin position was hard, no matter where you are playing from, the ball had to go up hill with the chance of going downhill not long after. My chip was short, my shortish putt travelled over twenty feet, double bogey, very disappointed in the last hole, don't know if it was because of bad play or a unfair pin. Does not really matter in the end, my score stays at one over.
I played better than I thought I would, to come back from that start was good. I played safe and took my chances when they came. The end was disappointing but overall not as bad as I feared. If I can finish even, or just under par tomorrow. I will be happy with my week here. Good luck all.
